OP, still obsessing over Rift? i have no idea why there was even need to bring ambition and creativity argument and comparison since both MMOS are completely different and made for two very different type of gamers.
I would take your post more seriously if you stop comparing apples to oranges.
[mod edit]
Back to the topic, fact remains that you are comparing apples to oranges. The vision, imagination and innovation does not automatically make a game fun. I have seen these arguments for many other sandbox MMOS and really it has nothing to do with a game being fun. However, for a themepark MMO Rift is making right use of ambition and creativity. You would have more impact with your post if you compare other sandbox MMOS with Xyson.
You use same arguments when it comes to Archage, why the hell compare a themepark to sandbox? they have nothing in common.
Hearing comparisons with other sandboxes would indeed be more interesting. I've only been exposed in three (UO, Ryzom and SWG pre) so I wonder if this game feels as complete as those three. Especially as complete as Ryzom, I suppose.
Weeks ago, i preordered, got into the game. played a while, and then cancelled it! Watching the fire animation really kill the game for me. But this people are nice, they refund me A.S.A.P.
Oh better yet like Xasapis suggested you compare Xsyon to other sandboxes and how this game advances the sandbox. All good ideas to talk about Xsyon which should be the focus of this thread but instead you picked on Rift making this thread about Rift.
A lot of Rift fans seemed to have an obsession with me and have come here to make personal attacks, rather then talk about games.
I would, as a honest request, ask those folks to talk about the games and not keep on trying to incite me to retaliation with personal comments.
There is no need to sink to a personal level on a games forum and chase posters around the forums in order to keep attacking them. Just because I talk about Rift it dosent mean you have to read it or, if you choose to, feel offended. Please, calm down, clear heads, get it into perspective, and lets get back to games.
If you don't like what i post, put me me on ignore, thats fine, but these cosntant witch hunts by Rift fans on every non slavering post made about the game are not healthy.
Like I say, it's more then fine to dosagree with me, I welcome that because I like talking about games, but these constant personal insults and attacks are getting beyond a joke. i shouldnt, on these fourms, need to keep justifying why I am talking about different games.

save it for the Rift official forums, please?
Lol dude, you brought Rift into this ... not the fans.
In short, you arez responsible yourself fro derailing this thread, no one else.
and I am happy to talk about Rift. The game.
it's these constant personal flames from you Rift fans that I am talking about.
Now please, stop, and if you want to talk about games lets do that, because once again this is no more then a flame post from you.
What?
Why would we want to talk about Rift in the Xsyon forums?
Graphics are on par with any other new game. It looks totally different from the screen shots, as I thought it looked old, but once I actually got in game and zoomed into my toon a bit... the fine detail is there and looks sharp.
I been playing for 4 days now and I absolutely love it. I feel like I am part of something bigger in this game for once, it has brought a feeling SWG first gave me back in its former days of glory.
I'll be playing Xsyon for a longtime to come.
Yeah, it will definitely get some love from me as well, it has impressed me a lot.
The scope and freedom, the sense of 'what if', is amazing in the game.
When I have sated my craving for a bit of old school themeparking in EQ I will get stuck in for sure
OP, I hope you read your original post, because it's a clear jab on Rift. In fact, this whole thread has no other real purpose. I am sure have not become any wiser about what has Xsyon improved over previous sandbox offerings.
And by the way, I intent to play Rift as my next MMO in line. I'm currently subscribed in LOTRO, previously on Aion. When Cataclysm was out I checked it for a month (20 days to see everything actually). And so on and so on. What I currently play does not make me a "fan". I do like talking about the things I enjoy, I don't know if that does.
Edit:
It is sad to see that those threads bashing Xryon seem to have more hands on info than a thread from people who like the game.
Well, forget about Rift already. Talk about Xsyon!
Would a Ryzom fan manage to migrate or what issues will I come by?
I honestly don't know enough about ryzom to say... I never left the newbie area in all honesty. Something about it just failed to connect with me. Not saying it's a bad game, i could see it's strengths, but I don't know, it just didnt click.
I would guess the biggest issue any new player would come by though in this game would be 'ok, logged in, what now?'
It greatest weakness, and it's greatest strength, is that it dosent spoon feed. People that need that strong sense of 'being told' in a game (toy?) won't get this at all, at least not right now.
To be bigger then it will probably be game will need a robust newbie experience adding tbh, but that can wait.
As it is right now it's a fascinating experience for the self motivated world builders out there who want to see what these virtual worlds would be like if players were in charge from the start to make their own lore.
thread should be called Xsyon vs Rift or something....hehe....not here to attack anyone (or any game).
I already subbed for Rift (since this thread is hald rift now hehe) but i'll be holding my eye on Xsyon too.....as an old UO player i cant help but wonder if it can life up to UO.
Altough from what i have seen its mostly about building things and no (mutated) monsters seen or anything yet in this game.
The animations seem very bad from what i have seen tough...if the animations for the mobs is as bad as those of the character then i dont feel like paying a monthly fee for something that feels alpha......now now, dont even think about dissin me on the gfx front....i played UO remember?
IMHO not as innovative as the OP thinks it is.......as for what i have seen this game just looks like a large map where you can build fires, walls and tents.....thats about it.
But none the less i will be keeping an eye out for this game and see if they can make the expirience a little more enjoyable.
I have been playing since March 3rd, 2010, 5 days after the server went up, if I remember right. Here are a few things that the game is to me, oh and by the way I have been playing MMORPGs since EQ1.
Remember leaving Neriak and running out to Nektulos Forrest? Remember the first skelly you saw and wanted to run up and bash it? If you do... then you are on the right track!
Xsyon is a game of discovering, just like the first time you ventured out of that spawn point. As my sig states, if you woke up in a desolate world, and you had a backpack with a few tools, and recipe book, and the clothes you had on... and you had to survive.... what would you do first ?
I see the question in game all the time... "Hey I just logged in, what do I do now?" Just my point... what do you do now? Too many games have a guy standing there with a ! or ? over his head and a shiny line on the ground that points you right to the next person. This doesn't!
So I found this scrap of paper in a junk pile I woke up on... some metal near by and a peice of pencil on it.... I thought I should keep track of what I am seeing in case someone finds me dead later or I need to share my findings with others. I am not sure how I got here or even where I am....
Day 1.
I have checked out my surroundings and found a lake nearby, its a large lake with some native North American folage and trees. From the looks of the surrounding mountains I could be in the Western United States.
I have seen a few racoons, a coyote and a small black bear.
Near my resting point where I woke up, I found a backpack with a few tools and a shovel. I am going to try and make a weapon or sorts so that I can eat.. darkness is coming!
I was able to kill a racoon, I skinned it, got a few bones and made a needle, with some leather strips I cut from its fur I was able to make some warmer shoes for my travels tomorrow. I need to find some shelter. Darkness has set in. First night here I come.
Day 2.
I woke to the sounds of chickens this morning, and a frosty surrounding. My shoes I made kept my feet warm through the night, if I can find a few more racoons I could make a full suit of warmer clothing.
The vegitation around offers a few oats and berries, I need to find something to start a fire today.
Was able to find some racoons and a coyote, got some warmer gear on, still need a fire, the stuff I am foraging for is not enough to keep my strength up. Saw a stream today, perhaps tomorrow a fishing pole. Still nothing to start a fire.
Day 3.
Was startled this morning to the sounds of voices, others? As I located a few others that were as in bad a shape as I was we talked about what had happened, no facts other then we all knew that the world we once knew was gone.
As I spent the day with these few others, we were able to gather some fish, kill a few more animals. I shared my knowledge of the warmer clothes and was able to make them some items as they gave me some fish.
One of them had a flint that he had found while looking for a sharp rock, fire at last, I think I will stay in the proximity of the warmth for tonight.
Day 4.
The sun hit my face and the warmth opened my eyes, I was alone again, no fire, and just as lost as I was 4 days ago. As I sit here thinking about what I know... no lights, no modern weapons as I remember, no radio or hell no technology as far as I can see.... nothing but mounds and mounds of junk.
Today I am going to find some shelter, I need to find a way to protect myself, I will survive, but for how long is yet to be decided.
Found a belt buckle
some screws
10 metal bolts
an old saw blade
I am going to keep track of my inventory, there are all kinds of things that can be found on the mounds. There are even areas where cloth and leather pile up... I bet I could make some better clothes or even some make shift armor to help protect me.
I need a bigger basket or a larger backpack
Day 5.
FOUND SOME FLINT
Day 6.
So I have wondered a ways from where I woke up today... I have found an area I think I will try to make a place.... nice river near by, some trees, and of course a mound.
I will have a tarp done today, a tent by tonight.... who knows by tomorrow!
This is an example of how your adventure will start, with a bit or RP in it you will be captivated by the game in no time.
It may be just me, but the freedom alone is certainly worth the investment. I've encountered a number of players complaining about the lack of content, overall 'hand-holding' and graphics.
Content wise, we as the community are responsible for creating an immersive world. The developers have stated and proved new content is added frequently, we just aren't informed of a percentage of it, it's up to us to discover it.
Lack of direction? Welcome to sandbox, this isn't a Blizzard development. If you haven't got the will to explore the world, familiarise yourself with the controls and functions, or even ask for help on chat - I have no sympathy for you, this game isn't for you.
Finally, the good old graphics debate. The website, official screenshots and a majority of the YouTube videos are simply awful, they don't do the game justice whatsoever. Upon visiting Xysons landing page for the first time, I laughed.. closed my browser and didn't give it a second thought. I regret my naivety now, but I can understand why folks have formed an opinion.
The graphics themselves are pretty good, as good as they can be for a game that permits terraforming. Granted, the animations aren't fantastic, but personally it isn't noticeable when playing the game. For those of you on the fence, I'd suggest waiting out launch and check out the trial that will inevitability be launched due to the announcement yesterday.
Don't base your opinions on 9 month old video footage, horrible screenshots and blatent troll attempts.
Lol I was keeping pace with this game well before you first posted here if anything you followed a lot of folks here (probably not true but thats your logic) Look you want to make a real comparison you got mortal online, minecraft, Darkfall, and Wurm. Try making comparisons to one of those and it would make a lot more sense. There are many fans of this game from all over the forums and there have been nearly 0 fights here and lots of honest discussion about the game.....until this thread.
When the trail server come up i'll be trying it out to see if it "calls" me in like UO did.........i love the "euh how do i start to do things" experience, so this game most be for me from what i read.
Most of the people who played it seem very positive about this game.
It would be churlish of me to attack Trion (as I have done recently) for lacking scope, ambition, and imagination in their Rift game and not at least sample (what I consider) a game truer in concept to what I think a a MMORPG *should* be in 2011.
I have to say, good job. This game has all of that I mention above and tbh should be installing a deep sense of shame in massively funded devs like Trion to shame in what it's aiming for and achieving with it's true indie status and limited funding. I am honestly proud to have thrown down the money to try it, and in a months time (when i have satisfied my old school EQ cravings) I will definitely be playing it.
Nothing more to this post i guess then an outburst of gladness and cheer for what can be with a little customer/ community support. It is good now, and thats not even touching on what it CAN be.
Everyone that has whined and complained (as I have) about the state of modern MMORPGs owes it to themselves to at least give this title a second look, even if it isnt the focus of attention of the hype zerg right now. If this title dies rather then becoming another EVE I will firmly be convinced that it isnt the devs that have killed the MMORPG, but the players. The very ones that cry about it's degredation. And I will walk away, shanking my head, saying "well, y'know what? You get the games you deserve".
At last, a game where we build our world, define our adventures, and set our goals. Kudos Xsyon
It is a nice effort but MMORPGs need several components to be great. This game has alot of crafting and building but lacks combat and particulary PvE combat.
Dont think many people will find fighting racoons and bears, particulary interesting. This whole post apocalyptic thing I dont think appeals to most people. Atleast they should throw in some mutaded monsters, zombies or whatever.
We are in a small part of the mountain region of what used to be the Western United States, Lake Tahoe area. Surrounding this basin is a green mist, resedue from a catclysmic event. No one really knows what lies beyond the mist... but stories have spread of creatures of mystery and horror. Some say they are animals that have lived through the past events and mutated to something different... something new!

yeah, thats actually pretty valid... but then i guess the real boogie man, will be other humans, just like in the real world.
we also don't know the scope of the wildlife yet to be fair. there may well be some super predators to come
it has been mentioned though that the devs have recognised the combat point and are revamping. i suspect it will never be a PvP action combat orientated game, but to me thats more then fine. I prefer a little combat/ PvP with my world building rather then the other way around.
Look you want to make a real comparison you got mortal online, minecraft, Darkfall, and Wurm. Try making comparisons to one of those and it would make a lot more sense.
That depends on what i am comparing. You have missed the point though.
look, this has been answered already. Go back and maybe familiarise yourself with the response before you try and join in and we can talk.
I guess the Xsyon supporters will read what they say, not get personally butthurt about it, and respond in a clear and rational manner.
At least I know thats what I will be doing.
and I never criticised Rift as a sandboxer. I play both styles- I have enjoyed many themepark games. I always criticised it as a bad example of what it is, nothing more nothing less. It is a bland insepid and tedious little game that is derivative, unimaginative, and uninspired to it's core, and all that has nothing to do with it being a themepark.
less of the veiled digs maybe and more talking about games, thx
I wasn't referring specifically to you, but as an example, yes, there were some Rift critics who accused Rift fans directly and indirectly to be blind fanbois and shills, for the pure reason that they disagreed with those persons' viewpoint, while the only thing what they were doing is the same that you're doing here, talking enthusiastically and positively about a game you like.
So, true, I do find it interesting to see how people handle it when the roles are reversed or when it happens that they're being called 'blind fanbois' or shills by people who dislike the game. It's like holding up a mirror in a way
As for the game Xsyon, it does reaffirm my conviction that the amount of sandbox oriented gamers makes up a vastly larger percentage of the mmorpg.com community compared to the MMO gaming community overall or compared to other MMO sites; which makes sense because in the current MMO climateamong those MMO gamers there'll be the most dissatisfied people who're looking for a new MMO home and visit the mmorpg.com forums in hopes of finding it here.
Which is a good thing: hopefully Xsyon can be a new home for a number of seeking MMO gamers and ease their restless and frustrated roaming around on forums of games they don't like, I wish it all the success that I do all the MMO's coming out this year

Sounds like a plan and handy implementation for future content. Who knows, a bit of a Fallout sandbox vibe?
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Comparing this game and rift simply makes no sense. You talk about how developement plays a big role in the comparison but its not needed. Rift is a triple A theme park mmo Xsyon is a indie grass roots mmo virtual world. For comparison sake it makes more sense to compare it to wurm or minecraft than rift. I do not need to discuss the merits and flaws of rift here its simply not needed. However a genuine discussion on sandbox mmos and how Xsyon enters that market seems truely relavent. Yes both games are mmos but the target audience is completely different. So far as I can tell Xsyon is going for the close knit community (which is find refreshing). I would love to see rift pulled out of the conversation here so arguements dont happen. Too much bashing of one game can result in retaliation post, trolling and all sorts of other things that simply were not here before your thread. if you really want to argue about the issues between current game developemnt and taking risk I would take it to the pub.It is sad to see the most civil and helpful thread probably on the site become what the rift thread is now. Lets leave rift issues there and focus on Xsyon.

My gaming blog
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release].
