I need help optimizing my client

JimmacJimmac Member UncommonPosts: 1,660

My computer can run EQ2, Vanguard, Eve, and the like with no problem. But for some reason, EQ1 has a hard time keeping a good frame rate. The problem seems to be the "Far Clip Plane" option. If I reduce this all the way to zero, the game runs flawlessly with a great, no lag frame rate. If I turn this option up to just 5% (or beyond) the frame rate drops significantly to the point where it wont' be worth playing.

I've yet to identify any other options which affect the frame rate, and I've tried a good chunk of the ones I can find. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Basic specs:

- Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, 3g ram, 3GHz (2 cpu's)

    Under graphic options > Advanced > memory mode.  Try setting it to balanced or least and see if that helps at all.  Also under the same advanced options, turn off advanced lighting, bloom lighting, and shadows.  Those take up good processor power.

    One problem with EQ on newer computers is that it runs at too high a framerate, thus maxing out your GPU pointlessly.  In game, under options>display>advanced, there is a slider that lets you set an artificial limit on framerate.  You want this, because the default is infinity.  Try setting this to something between 60 and 90.  You won't notice any degradation in playability and it takes a lot of load off your GPU.

    Also, if you are experiencing abnormally slow mouse turn speeds, find the file eqclient.ini in the default EQ directory.  Open it up in an editor and under the [default] section add:

    Vsync=1

    This also seems to solve some crashing to desktop issues that some people have experienced as well.

    Also, check whatever anti-virus you are running. This computer that is not my own is running Norton. I had to tweak and fiddle for ages.......And that's not even the game. Seriously though, I had to make a lot of changes to Norton before the game would even run.

    Edit* check your drivers as well, especialy if you have an nvidia card. I had to backtrack a lot untill I got a driver that worked. Double check me but I think around 8.5 worked best.

    If I recall Eq can eat over 1gb of memory with new models and fairly high settings, and with a 3gb machine with a 32bit OS you could come close to the limit = swapping. Clip pane is likely the main key to performane - I can run about half clip pane on a GF8800.

    to previous poster about norton<ytes its a great anti-virus but if you arent a technician i suggest you to use microsoft security essential(make sure to chose the 32 bit or 64 bit in the undermenu)mse2 is simple very effective and is optimised to run with ie

    if you dont use ie you might need some other software,not sure if ms changed the way mse is but they used to have the main security stuff in mse but they also had some in the browser ,if you re like me and use firerfox or other alternate browser you might need to make sure you have the counter part security of whatever is included in ie ,aside from that mse is the best for casual computer user!
