Just because it's popular?
If there's anything I've learned over the years, it's that people can make themselves like or hate anything they want to. They put on the blinders regarding anything that could prove them wrong, and cling to anything that vindicates what they want to believe. We see it in everything from the mundane (making yourself like something your girlfriend likes) to the moraly reprehensible (racism, religious intolerance, etc).
We're all familiar with the people who only like something because it's popular...but not many people acknowledge the "anti-fanboi" who hates something for the same reason. We all know the type...the metal head who hates Metallica and only listens to obscure bands that frankly just aren't that good but are awesome because they're not "mainstream." What about the WoW anti/fanboi? It boggles my mind how many people profess to hate WoW but when you start grilling them on why, their whole logic base falls apart...because they were making themselves hate it and ignoring anything that might make them question that hatred.
The best part is that these two extremes have the exact same roots: the popularity of their fascination and wanting to "belong to a crowd."
So, are you someone who hates this game because of it's popularity...loathe it because you're too awesome to like something other people do? Too l33t to be deceived by it's sinister marketing schemes? Or are you maybe someone who will love it no matter how much of a stinking pile of poo it is? Or do you belong to the third camp, the one with people who judge for themselves and view things subjectively and don't let other people sway their opinions?
Well, which is it?

Very few people on this site will look at the game objectively. Most have already made up their minds about how good/bad it is.
What i do when i judge the game is take a look at the the two extremes, then find the middle ground between the two. Look at some screenshots/ videos and some reviews from a site. Then, i form my opinion on the game itself.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Hate a video game? Not really something worthy of hatred.
As to the game itself, I haven't really seen enough to form a real opinion. I'm disappointed in the apparent Blizzard/WOW worship some of the development team have exhibited publically, the IP is just sort of meh to me, (there are more interesting Sci-Fi universes IMO), the hype seems excessive, and I'm really not sure I'm going to like all the cut/scenes and stories, they started to drive me crazy in DA.
Its true, I don't like things in this world because they're popular, nor do I eschew them. I weigh each one whether or not I like them and react accordingly.
WOW has its fun points, and others that keep me from really truely enjoying the game. Just my personal preferences really, nothing against the game itself.

I don't hate it, in fact I haven't even been following it that closely. Now what I do hate is what LA has done with the franchise as a whole. Why do they feel the need to go with highly stylized minimal violence kiddie cartoony crap (rhetorical question money being the answer, yes I saw the indiana Jones episode of South Park lol. )
Hate a video game? That seems to me as retarded as cutting off your knob to help your sex life.
Don't hate it, just not holding my breath for it.
As far as WoW goes, it's more like the old saying "Don't hate the game, hate the player." I refuse to play WoW because of the community. I'm not saying that everyone who plays is a felionus DB, but I will say that 99.7% of the ones I came across were.
I was thinking of giving Rift a try, but it looks like it's headed down the same road.
As far as SWTOR goes, I'm remaining hopefully optimistic that the game will turn out good. I will probably have a bit more leeway with the community when it comes out. Not so much because it's Star Wars, but science fiction in general.
Orcs and elves are getting a bit old....
Hating a video game is pretty silly, but there are plenty of people that appear to have that kind of free time.
This game isn't even out yet. How can anyone hate it? Oh, yeah, that's right - we're talking about some of the individuals that comprise the MMO "community" here.
Personally, though it's no my type of game, I think it has some interesting aspects about it, enough to probably give it a try when it comes out.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
I have no hate for any game, I'm just tired of all the themepark games coming out. I envy the people who like these style of games and keep hoping someone will make a good quality sandbox game like EVE in a steampunk or goth setting.
Its the design and concepts of the game itself is what people dislike it not because its popular to hate , in theory to them at Bioware this may sound good on paper and may sound good to people that came from consoles and single player games that have played all of their titles which this game has similar lines to said other titles , but to others that concept is extremely flawed especially in a supposed MMO sacrificing core elements of MMOs for their story? Sounds suspect and almost naive to think that the story alone is going to keep people playing for years upon end to hear voice overs and text, it doesnt really impress or even try to be different but follow in the step as have so many mediocore titles over the years.
Well I hate it, and with good reason. SW TOR used to hold me down and fart on my head when we were at school together.

Ok I'll keep it simple. Star Wars is a very well known, very well loved Sci F franchise for more than one generation of fans. The Star Wars Universe is a favored childhood memory for quite a large number of people. Most of these people consider themselves to be Star Wars fans first and MMO gamers second.
And speaking of MMOS, there has already been one MMO created for this IP. To many it is considered to be a dismal failure. Now there is a second game in the making, and although it is being made by a company known for some excellent single player RPGS, they have never made an MMO before, and are in bed with EA, a company many people feel couldn't find its own ass with both hands and a road map. Their previous MMORPG title with another company that was known for actually making a good MMORPG, is now one of the prime examples of what NOT to do when making one.
Add to the mix Bioware is being incredibly tight fisted with info about this game, with the ironic exception of some of the, apperently suicidal, PR guys who like to bandy the incredibly incendiary word Wow about in interviews, and you unsuprisingly get quite a bit of anxiety from both fans of the Star Wars IP, and MMORPGers alike.
Do I feel most of the hubris is fair, or even warranted? No not really. But I sure as hell can understand the reason for its existence. Hope this little talk helps the OP now understand as well.

I really hate mint-chocolate, but I never tried it. Sarcsm off.
I can you acually hate some game you never played? They just assume the game is bad? Or they just want it to fail?
Lmao Classic! I just solied my armour........Don't know what that has to do with anything though. Will be over here in the corner if anybody needs me for anything.
Not sure if this was aimed at my post or not, but as to my feelings on SW TOR, I don't really have any strong feelings one way or the other. George Lucas managed to ham handedly kill my enchantment with his brain child, with his retouches to the original trilogy (Han Solo shooting first), and the three prequels. So I'm not looking forward to this game as a Star Wars fan.
And I've never actually been a fan of The Old Republic Universe either so I'm not really looking forward to this title as an MMORPG either.
I wouldn't have posted on this thread about it had the OP not used a stupidly leading and baiting question for the thread title, and then went on in his post to commit the same sin he is accusing haters of SW TOR of committing, PREJUDGING without really having all the facts.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
There are some like that here but surprisingly is there a lot more hype and hating at GW2 & Rifts forum.
For some reason do most people here not care that much about TOR, it is actually rather odd that Rift is a lot more populat here, after all have TOR a well known IP, are made by a huge and popular company and have a lot higher budget.
There are of course things to be worried about but the same goes for any unreleased game.
If I must guess I think most people here dislike the art style, but there is probably more reasons for it.
I'd hazard a guess that most see this game as something that will do well on the market.
'Made by Bioware' is probably enough for most gamers.
Lets be honest, Bioware fans is going to buy this by the droves. Whether they stay or not is another story but from many posters here, this game is a known quantity and therefore 'boring'.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
I am inclined to like this game for two reasons out of the starting block. The first was my life long love of Star Wars. Heck I saw episode four in the theater when it was first released and fell in love with it immediately. Second is the fact that I enjoy the stories and game play that BioWare puts into their games. I have play so many of them by now that saying I had played them all would only be a slight exxageration. They have not let me down yet.
Even with those inclinations though, I did a lot of research on this game. Google and Bing were definately my big time friends in this endeavor and it paid off for me. What I found is a game that seems to have good game play, great animations, nice artwork (especially the most recent stuff), and overall excellent graphics. I have been impressed enough that I have decided to try this game when it releases. Will probably even pre-order it for the special benefits you normally get for it.
What will keep me in the game though, is what is delivered after the game goes live. How good is the animations throughout the game? The variations in the art? The graphics? and most especially . . . How good is the stories? It was these very things that makes me pull my hair out in frustration with WoW. They all seem to suck on WoW. So much so that I never could bring myself to actually buy the game or sub to it. I have played on a friends account for a long while now and find it hard NOT to wipe it from my hard drive every day it is so bad. I keep trying to "let it be good soon" and no luck yet. So far I am on Level 48 and that is probably as far as I can go with it. It's just that bad (IMHO).
So OP, to answer your question, I have formed my current opinions on this game based on a LOT of research, since I can not play it just yet. As for WoW, I formed my opinion for that on a lot of play time. I refused to jump on any band wagons when I was in high school and now that I am a couple decades past that, I don't plan on jumping on a band wagon now.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
I am looking forward to it. Couple of reasons:
- The game world(s): huge, varied, detailed and inspired from what I've seen. And I am a sucker for immersive gameworlds.
- The art-direction: looks to be really nice. I still have some concerns about character looks, but everything else looks like a painting.
- Two factions and PVP servers with more freedom to fight in the open worlds. (Though we yet have to see how the rulesets will pan out in detail, it is still better than the 'everyone on your server is your friend' concept of GW2 in regard to the open game world).
- A fresh take on gathering and crafting by managing companions. Seems crafting/gathering is getting a lot of attention and won't be a rushed feature like many other big releases the last years.
- Having your own spaceship to operate from in different worlds / area's. Roleplay friendly.
- Speeder bike thingies for mounts.
- Pew pew laz0rs!
I do not care so much about the IP. I'm not so much a fan of Starwars itself but more of the 'future open universe with lots of diversity' it stands for. In that sense the storylined gameplay is not my main reason for being interested at all; I see it as a nice extra feature to give some meaning and fluff to the leveling process.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Apart from the thread title I see none of that in his post, but then again I consider myself objective in this matter. It seems you wanted it to have that angle and it did suite your own post so all is fine I guess =P
I will try the game no matter what reviews it gets, maybe its a luxury but money is no issue for me so I pick up any game I want and make my own opinions about it. I'm not superpsyked about the IP (anymore, there was a time when starwars was awesome for me and that was before phantom menace lol) but I'd like a change from the same old fantasy MMO's I've been playing for years now. I realize the game will most likely be same old with cosmetic changes tho. I'd luv to see a sandbox (at least partially) Dune MMO but chances are slim haha
I once again find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with the guy with the best sig on the site!
I will say this about the IP, though. Compared to the movies, the novels are GOLDEN. I watched the movies and enjoyed them to a certain extent. I wasn't really into the IP until SWG, which got me started reading a lot of the different SW novels & series. Its that open, diverse world you speak of that makes Star Wars the perfect IP for writing and gaming!

Ive been a member of this website for a long time.. as you can see from my sign up date.
They only consistancy on this forum is... they hate everything. I only come here cause ive been here so long as it is, but dont expect any positive objective viewpoints from the majority.
Go look at every game forum, all you see is hate, the usual reason being.. all the people who like the game are playing the game and dont have time to actually post nonsense on a third party website. All the fans of TOR are on the official forums, not these ones..
As for your category, i try every MMO for myself, every MMO i trash i trash because of first hand knowledge, unlike most who just read some review or watch a video on youtube or some other half ass method of investigation that passes as a game review these days.
