Hello,
Long time MMO player since UO in 1997. I hate people and have no desire to talk to anyone or form any type of relationships. How am I able to carve out my own little area to play where I cant be raped? Do I have to squat on someone elses land and pay them a tax?

You can find land up in the mountains, far away from other players, that's no problem. You will have a tiny patch of land and you can't be killed in this tiny patch.
But when you stay there you won't have many resources, and without resources you cannot progress much. Thus you will need to leave the safety of your place in search for resources and you will need to trade and for that you will have to deal with people.
Solo play in Xsyon is not really an option.
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
Unlike most sandbox games, Xsyon really doesn't allow for solo play. While you can go do the hermit thing, you'll quickly find that after getting kille dand losing everything on you, you're left with little recourse but to either go join a guild, scavenge/craft for 30 hours to get some tools together to do anything again, or ask other players to give you stuff to get back on your feet.
I have not found solo play yet to be even a remotely viable option.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Solo play is possible, but difficult. I know plenty of soloers in Xsyon. But this is a social worldbuilding game, and eventually, you will probably have to establish some sort of trade agreement with another player or a neighboring tribe.
While you can set up your own homestead somewhere where there are few people, more likely than not you'll see that the easiest thing to do is trade with tribes for the tools and resources you cannot make or gather yourself within a reasonable amount of time.
In my palm I hold the world, in my hand I grasp it.
I loosened my fist but for an instant,
and thus I failed to clasp it.
Thank you all for the replies. I suppose maybe could find a relaxed tribe that doesnt require Vent and won't try to tell me what to do, where to go, or where to be.
I tried the Vent thing once in Shadowbane and after hearing the voices of all the Comic Book Guys from Simpsons and the voices of all the 14-18 year olds, I said NEVER AGAIN.
Should I buy the game now or wait till after March 1 is my next question.
Thanks
I have been testing the game since March 2010 in a tribe, up till the last 3 months. I have been doing the soloing thing. It is doable, from someone that knows the game VERY well. A new player doing the game solo is a ROUGH road and will take away from the fun that the game truely offers. I would recommend doing just what you think... join a tribe, learn the game, stick to yourself if you like until you are ready to embark on the land alone.
Buy now or later.... I preordered my first account in March... liked it so much I added a 2nd account for my son shortly after. I would start now, you will get the chance to learn some of the stuff about the game, get a 2 week headstart on others that are waiting as well as some pretty cool preorder tools / weapons. Imho well worth the money... I will be in Xsyon for a long time.
This game is really easy to be a hermit in.
However, you might be limited in what you can do. You only start with a few items based on your starting skills. The rest, well i havent found way to make myself every tool i need to creat everything i want.
Its very dependant in trading with others.
Your homestead, when placed, offers you the ability to kill people within your area, but they will not be able to damage you. It is very possible to find lad, away from the lake, in a place no one will probably ever go. Just make sure you pick your starting skills wisely, make sure the starting tools that are given for each starter skill matches what you wan to be able to make.
Also, as this game seems to have a lot of anti-socials who dont wan to see or hear from anyone else, might i suggest a game gener that doesn involve the word Multiplayer in it. Think you would be much happier playing an offline single player game.
Just make sure you stay low key and as far away from the lake as possible...the darkfall community seeks your tears because they are delicious.
When they make computer AI that is as good as a human, then I will play an offline game, heh. Even in 2011, computer AI in games is a joke. nothing beats competeing with other humans, i just dont want to talk to them, that's all.
Why in the name of goodness would anyone who hates people and has no desire to form any type of relationship want to play an MMO - a game genre which differs from others precisely because of the presence of real people in the game world? Why wouldn't you play a single-player, offline game..?
See my above post.
I like investing in and building a character. I like a persistant and ever changing world. I like competion against humans, because there is no joy in beating a computer script.
I just dont want to talk to anyone when i play. I do that all day at school and work.
Heh
Edit: I should add here that I do plan on joining a tribe fairly early on. I have seen that it offers a different level of game altogether and I did the solo thing in beta. Having said that I think it is still a viable way to play.

I am going to go ahead and disagree with most people here because I have done it in beta.
I found a spot of land far away from anyone but withing about 5-10 minute of a scrap pile. Soon enough I was able to make my own baskets and make all the tools I need. I would store extra sets in my basket and not take tools out with me just in case I was killed. I could run to the scrap pile if I needed things and sort it there and bring back what I needed. I was able to craft my own armour and kill black bears with little problem.
Will it take you longer? It sure will. Will be be a huge disadvantage? Not right away. Down the road as the game progresses it could be a problem. If a tribe decides to go to war with another tribe near you and you get caught in the cross fire with your substandard armour etc. you might get killed.
I found it helpful to find one or two people who play near me that are also soloish and trade with them.
When there was survey on how people would be playing a large number (almost half last time I checked) had said that they planned to place a "homestead" which is for a single person. There are also many people who want to play in a small tribe of 3-5 etc. There are several large tribes for sure. They might build a castle or huge fort and have a dedicated crafter who can build them higher quality weapons. Does this make the game impossible to play as a solo player? I certainly don't think so unless they are out to kill you all the time in which case you pick up and move somewhere else further away.
There are many people who plan to play mostly solo. My plan is to start out that way until I have reached a point where I can't do much more on my own and then join a tribe. Who knows how long this will take. I think at that point you would be ready to join a tribe as well or likely quit the game. This could take quite awhile depending on how often you play.
This is all just my opinion. . but it is based on doing it. The game is a lot of fun on your own. Eventually you will run into the same people around wherever you set up. That is how I preffer to do it. If they are cool I will trade witih them and eventually join their tribe.
I actually think this is the best way to play initially. If there is a person in your tribe that can do everything how fun will it be to learn how to make something on your own. "Hey guys I can make armour out of mule deers!" . "just throw it in the pile there with the rest".
To me Xsyon is a survival game and surviving on your own is a little more tricky. . and that is what I am looking for. Just don't be afraid to ask a neighbor for a tool of you need it.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Is there an offline, single-player game that offers all the little world-building goodies that this game does?
Just because I want to be in a world populated with other people doesn't necessarily mean that I want to get to know them. In RL, I see other people every day and I have no interest in stopping and chatting with them or, heaven forbid, joining their tribe. Why should a simulated world be any different? Besides, without the rest of you toiling away and doing the things you do, there would be no economy for me to interact with. And honestly, I find game ecomomies more worthwhile interacting with than most people much of the time.
You weird social people really make me scratch my head at times.
LONERS OF THE WORLD UNITE! ... errr wait ...
This echos my experience so far. Nearby my spot was a friendly tribe and a few other friendly hermits. I think that this will lead to some good trade and I'd probably help the tribe or other hermits defend themselves or assist them in large projects (maybe community projects as well)
On the other hand, if a tribe chooses to grief me... I'm sure making them stay on their toes 24/7 would be a lot of fun as well.

Solo play is harder, but achieveable:
1. You can make a camp, aka homestead, of 1 member, you! its smaller than tribe camps in radius.
2. You dont get all the tools you need to make all the things you want, you will either have to grind tool crafting to make more tools or find people to trade with, or kill people and rob theres.
3. Some tribes are already travelling in groups, so be careful because the only safe zone you have is your homestead, outside ur own camp your anyones prey :P
