Not sure I have anything new to say after all that has been said. Like many, I sit here waiting for the launching of Rift, Tera Online and Star Wars The Old Republic.
After playing the open beta in Rift, here are my pros and cons:
Pros:
-solid game performance overall
-quick quests intelligently designed to move you along the game, isntead of boring quests that send you all over. Here, quests assist you to develop your character, to know more about the game and they are always pushing you forward at an interesting pace. No punishing gathering quests with low drop rates, at least as far as I have experienced. That doesnt seem to be the point of the game, unlike Silk Road Online. hehehe
-nice sound, graphics and animation
-Loved how the game gives you the option to read more about the history, IF you want to. If not, just move along. But if you like that kind of stuff, it is there for you at the end of every quest.
-Anyway, I wont list many things and all the details. It IS a solid game and very well done. Technically, it sets a good standard for how games should be designed for launch.
Cons:
-I just dont feel it. The game seems to me like a beautiful painting made by a robot. Technically it is almost flawless. But I see no heart in it. I mean, when I played WoW for the first time, I was like "Wow!". And even though today I have gotten over WoW(played it ever since day one and left it even before they implemented Battle Grounds), I have to give credit for Blizzard. I can see why people say Rift is a copy of Wow. But in a way, WoW raised the bar when it was launched. I still think, from what I can remember of Wow, that I had better character control in WoW than I can have in Rift, movement wise. And the world of WoW was marvelous. I could spend hours just travelling alone. Im Rift, I dont see that. There is a certain pace in the game, always pushing you forward towards the end game. And all those NPC fightings going on dont help me immerse in the game at all. It is actually rather annoying. I can see what they tried to do, but it is just no working for me.
-I played both factions and i found that, visually, the races look all the same, especially the defiants. They are all humanoid races with similar sizes and appearances. Take a loot at Tera Online and Star Wars. Those games are a lot more colorful. So is WoW. So are most games in the same cathegory as Rift. That really disappointed me.
That's it. i wont get into many details, like I said. I liked Rift. I will probably pre-order it and give it a shot for a few months, but I already have the impression that this wont be THE ONE for 2011, at least not for me.
