Multiplatform mmos fail since pc or console version will suck in comparison to the other...unless they have completely different controls, but who will pay that much money for 1 game with 2 different control types...
Not sure why you say that. Square Enix managed to release FFXI on both PC, PS2 and xbox360 without seperating the players from the 3 systems into their own servers. And last time I checked, FFXI was still pretty well populated...
Sure, the pc is a more powerful platform with better graphics but consoles are a more stable platform. Developers just need to stop thinking they can just port a pc mmo to a console. Developers need to build a console from the ground up specifically for consoles.
Honestly I think developers are just afraid to do it. It's very possible and was done very well almost 10 years ago with FFXI. I really don't understand why more games haven't been made for multiple platforms but I'm not a developer so I guess they have their reasons.
For me, the biggest reason to do it is PC gaming is expensive and therefore consoles can reach a wider audience. I used to fork over the cash every few months or every couple years for that new graphics card or complete PC overhaul but I just can't manage it anymore. What I can manage is paying a couple hundred dollars every few years for a new console. The FPS crowd has moved to consoles and I think it's time for MMOs to make the jump too. I'd like to caviate that though, I think when they do make the jump it should be like ffxi and be cross platform but I wish they would find a better way of scalability for the folks that can fork over the cash. That way everyone is happy.
