I guess I wasn't the only one who was completely underwhelmed by DA2. As someone who wasn't played/seen the original Dragon Age but heard so many amazing things about, I jumped on the chance to play the DA2 demo as soon as it became available on Steam, and sat there thinking... WTF? Are these people crazy?
First I played a rogue, and couldn't really figure out combat (I guess it's just right-clicking a mob and your character does the work). The melee rogue wasn't bad, the archer version sucked balls. I also found trouble navigating through their buggy and not-so-intuitive menu system, and didn't notice the attribute points on level up at all until my second playthrough. Help bubbles telling you what to do would pop up in the very top right of the screen, too small to really notice during battle, and would disappear before you could finish reading them... (something about pausing combat mid-battle... but how? I couldn't read it that fast). I hated the view system they used, I hated that you couldn't see enemies in front of you until they were nearly on top of you, and hated the fact that my bow rogue well... They sucked. I think I did the same damage as the npcs.
So my second playthrough got a little better. I still haven't figured out or tried the pause combat system, because I can't read the 2 second pop up menus fast enough. I rolled a mage, which I heard were overpowered, and I wasn't disappointed. They were. Coming from a ranger who can barely kill one thing to a mage who can kill 6 at a time, I had a considerably easier time completing the demo... all 14 minutes of gameplay in it. Which brings me to the next point. What the hell just happened? None of the story really made any sense, there was no backstory, and I think... well, at some point I think the game just jumped from darkspawn middle of nowhere we'll never make it out, to some port city. There's also some dwarf hanging out with me. The whole story is flashing by too fast, there's so little development I barely know what's going on, but hey, I get to kill things again, so I won't complain.
After playing nearly every Demo that's hit Steam in the past 3-4 years (and some outside of it as well) this has probably been one of the most poorly done. I reminisced about the shareware version of SC1 back in the day. The one with 3 full and made special for the shareware missions, showing off some amazing things you could do with the game. Then it offered the full tech tree in a 1v1 multiplayer battle, and we were all on dial-up. It was fun, and it kept you playing it, and you wanted to play it so much you were an idiot to not buy the game after that. And people did. When BioWare made a demo for DA2, they didn't even let you change gear or alter your character model. What for? Is there something truly inside the amazing inventory system that would make me not want to play the real game? Or is it so poorly done I wouldn't want to?
At the same time, I noticed a lot of poorly done meshes for characters. My rogue female characters shoulder armor would clip actually into her chest while she was moving, during a cut scene even, not just during gameplay. The Witch of the Wilds neck would sometimes pop out of her armor piece on her neck near the back. All in all, this demo felt like the game was still heavily in beta.
Final thoughts is that I left actually less interested in Dragon Age than I started. I'll wait for a sale to hit and buy the original that everyone was raving about so much. As for DA2, it'll sit on the shelf as a rushed, poorly done sequel.
Also, some emotional moments at the start of the game weren't as emotional as they should have been imo.
You refering to the part where the sister/brother died and no one seemed to really care? lol
Yes, though I tried to avoid spoilers
People dont seem to know what a demo is.
There is no way the segment of gameplay was designed specfically for the demo and the real game will have an actual lead upto what was going on.
How many bioware games have you guys played? When have they EVER done a half assed story? Where youd ont know what is going on, and you dont care about any of the characters?
Bioware failing at telling a story is like Nike failing to make a good goddamned pair of sneakers. You people need to use some common sense and start picking out what aspects of the demo where designed specifically for the demo and which werent.
Obviously the lack of character customization, inventory options and story were just for the demo, how do i know this? Well it says it in big red letters at the bottom of the screen when you play the demo...
Calm down there.
I never said the story of DA2 won't be good, in fact I'm pretty sure it will be good.
I just said that the moment where your sibling dies is not really very emotionally involving imo. And you can in fact say this as the demo's start is the same as the retail start except for the locked game functions.
It's normal that that moment isn't really involving as you didn't get to know the character.
As I said, I really liked the demo overall and am looking forward to the full game.

I liked the demo, the art style is really good, something that I couldn get into DA:O. The combat was interesting, I will be getting it, it seems interesting.
I haven't tried the demo, the download is just too slow on my connection, but it seems that the people who like it are the same people who like console style combat and the ones who don't obviously prefer older style PC RPG combat. I'm with the older style crowd, so I doubt I would want to buy this game. I'm a big Bioware fan, but they seem to really be embracing the console crowd, kinda like how the entire industry seems to be heading in that direction. A bit sad, but console gamers do outunumber us substantially and developers don't seem to care about losing us if they can grab them instead.
PC gaming may not exactly be dead, but we're definitely losing our status as primary target audience.

I don't get this.
MUST it always be that when you like one thing you are absolutely not allowed to even think about liking something different?
I'm even playing Baldur's Gate 2 again now for the first time in years and I still like the oldschool combat, as I liked it in DA:O (which I played on the fan mod Nightmare+ difficulty btw).
Yet I also like what they did in DA2, because I agree with the devs when they try to remove awkward shuffling of characters, when they try to make action more involving and classes more distinct, because that was lacking in DA:O.
It's not either this or that, people who claim DA2 will be faceroll throughout are just trolling, the first 30-45 minutes of origins on normal were faceroll just the same. The game allows you to use strategy, the system is there, even in the demo (though you don't need it), I highly doubt that the devs would just put it in for giggles.

There's no way you actually played the demo to have had this experience. Pausing combat is a simple push of the spacebar. Who gets into a game and doesn't press various keyboard buttons to see what they do? I assumed that was common practice.
Mages were only overpowered in the intro, which was the point. All the classes were. You were playing through a story told by someone who was exaggerating your abilities. The mage actually ended up underpowered in the real playthrough unless you made it the healer and helped keep your allies alive, otherwise the Ogre and his lemmings would quickly overwhelm your team and you don't stand a chance on your own. The archer was OVERPOWERED. Easily, way overpowered, and I love archers, but I will admit to that. Their abilities to spam AoEs and hit pretty damn hard from a distance + knock things back on chance, naturally (without any additional skills or buffs or anything) means you're going to see a lot of people playing archers in the real thing.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but DA2 will not sit on the shelf, I promise you that. I played through the first one, and everything related to it. All the accomplishments, all the DLC, even played with the editor after I got bored replaying everything. Loved it. But I also loved the DA2 demo, and if you check the Bioware forums you'll see there are PLENTY of people who feel the same and even more who hated the first's combat, that now love the second's.

Ill wait untill i see it in budget for 2.5euros man this game is oh so not bioware old style rpg anymore:(
Its casual super action bad grafhic console garbage eazemode crap:(
Already lost my intrest totally on bioware they just dont have it anymore for me they enter mass market only for $$$:(
Capitalism is a bitch. And i totally agree, looking at this game i don't really know what happened at their dev meetings. Maybe its a test to see if dumbing something down runs fully paralel with making more money out of that something. If so, i do hope this sells worse then DA1, for there to be any chance whatsoever of a return to the more complex and engaging Bioware product line we saw in the late 90's. Atleast when it comes to fantasy rpg's.
I agree with Elikal pretty much, although I do like the new flemeth better. I'm thinking she may have "restored" herself between the first game and now.
The point where Flemeth appears is around the same time when your character in DA:O escapes the Ostegar. Flemeth is a shapechanger, she can probably take pretty much any form she chooses, we have seen the "old lady", sexy warrior and dragon so far. While we know that Morrigan could do many different shapes as well.
What I do not like however is the new combat. I'm sorry, but combat wise DA2 feels more like Diablo with a prettier skin: straight hack and slash.
Not really, I found that it was flashier, but you still probably will need solid strategy to beat monsters at higher difficulty. Also the tactics seem to be pretty similar to DA:O as well as the pausing. Remember, that even the DA:O it was really easy and one hardly had to pause at all with easier difficulties, which is actually good as some people care very little about combat, but play Bioware games for story/adventure experience.
What irked me demo wise ( I played the demo on the PS3 since I was defragging my PC at the time:p ) were hitches/slowdown in some spots and constantly being told "this is disabled in the demo" everytime I discovered something (inventory, weapon switching, etc.) as well as having the character creator disabled so I couldn't see just what could be customized on Bioware's character.
No comment. It was a demo.
I agree with Elikal strongly here, I just do not feel like this character is mine, I feel like Bioware just pushed a character on me and said "You will play this and like it!" And they even simplified (i.e. dumbed down) choices you can make for Bioware's character (only rogues can pick locks?), again making me feel more like I'm playing an old Diablo style game than a new generation RPG.
Once you get to customize it and play the more of the story I am pretty sure you will get more acquinted wiht your character. The demo was jumping all over the place after all and was very brief.
I receive my judgement for the release, but I was so far happy with what I saw. Actually liked the combat more than in the original and enjoyed the new dialogue system more as well. Skill system seemed more logical as well, still allowing different builds while streamlining the unnessary skills and giving alternative paths unlike the original where you had to take some skills you never used.

just a quick note. but you do know the demo at least the part with flemeth took part just after ostagar when your warden would have just gotten his first ally (after you recruit your first piece of the army *i always go for the elves first for some reason) and therefore if your warden chose to kill her then well he wouldnt have had the chance to choose to kill her yet considering travel times and earning morgans trust.
remember dragon age origins and dragon age 2 happen paralel to eachother (of course dragon age 2 covers a larger timespan but they do occur during the same time during some points)
I liked the demo. I liked the whole BG series and have played through it so many times throughout the years. However, using a 2hander in DA:O was a pain starting out, you'd miss all the time and dual wielding seemed the preferred choice. I prefer the DPS standpoint. The game does feel a lot more actiony, where I feel the pause system won't be as useful besides tossing a heal or CCing something important.
The one thing I hate that they did though, tthat really just pisses me off and grinds my bones... You're stuck with one race - human. Completely lame. Dwarves, always will.
I'll still probably buy it just because I don't have much else to do.

This. If you paid close attention to the story, after Flemeth saves you in dragon form, your hero mentions "All the Grey Wardens died at Ostagar" and Flemeth says "All but a few. They've gone their own way and are beyond your concern".
This event took place right after Lothering was destroyed (or after you gained the trust of one of your allies/defeated one of the objectives in the original Dragon Age)

Though point of note (god this is geeky) When asked if Morrigan could change into other people she indicated that she couldn't. She was appearing as is in human form and could not assume other human forms.
Now, this might not be the same for Flemeth though it's possible that it's just an artistic redesign.
I haven't seen this new flemeth so can't really comment.

Morrigan was still young and inexperienced. She could not transform to a dragon either

Im also a PC gamer and where losing im affraid, but i stick with PC and already searching games and older games that are mainly made for pc so when its comepletely dead i have enough games to play for a longitime, DA2 will for sure not be one of those its just pure crap action game with almost no exploration and freedom with one race and terible asian KOREAN style made grafhics and looks.
DA2 have maybe similar names and story/lore as DAO but its a totally different game purely made for consoles and noT realy a PC rpg as we knew it.
At least Bethesda seems to stick to there Elderscroll tradition and dont ruin Skyrim.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Oh I dont' know, I'm a pc gamer myself and, for example, I preferred Oblvion's hack and slash combat over morrowind's.
There are rpg players who enjoy combat based off of spread sheets over actual action combat.
I'm afraid I fall in the latter half of that. Probalby why I had to completely revamp my D&D combat as it was so dreadfully dull.
I just think there are people who are more about numbers than anything that is more visceral. But that makes sense, we are not all wired that way.

- I am still not happy my hero has a voice. It just isn't "me". I never really know what my hero will say until I hear it. I preferred the DAO way how the hero spoke.
This was what turned me away since they announced that change..
I do not enjoy playing my RPG's being some preset character, I especially do not enjoy that in the type of RPG DA is AND when it is also a bioware game.. It just feels like such a lazy step backwards from what they've done with the genre in the past already.
The greatest hero in game history EVER (IMVPO), The Avatar of Ultima, only ever said: name, job, bye. He didn't HAVE to have any clever sayings or lines or quotes. He was you. For me, that simple way to hint what you say and leave it with that was ideal.

But then do you disregard a game like "The Witcher"? That certainly isn't us.
It seems that role play games are either "us" a la oblvion or DA:O or us stepping into the role of another and steering him/her to what we would do.
When an actor takes a role, a role that is written out, that doesn't preclude him or her from putting their own stamp on it.
I've have seen many plays several times with eacth time having a different feel because what the actors did on stage.

I don't mind voice acting on main char, I roleplay my character so it doesnt matter to me. I do not think that the character is "me" , but a character I control. For example, I replayed Witcher throught twice because I only read the books after the first play through and wanted to do it again once I had a better idea how the character would actually act in different situations. Where is the fun of roleplaying yourself in a fictional setting? I find even a thought of it boring.

This demo upset me. My first playthrough as a mage I picked all the snarky responses. Flemeth seemed to really like that, and at one point looked like she was going to pounce and have her way with me, and I think I would have been okay with that. I'm almost thirty and have only ever dated women within 10 years of my age. This demo left me sexually confused, particularly because Flemeth has kind of a Baba Yaga thing going on. If I go to a dating site and look up matches, how high do I set the maximum age now? 55? 60? 65??? I'm frustrated with this demo, it left me with far more questions than answers.
I played 1 on PC, I hated the pause and play combat. I ordered DA2 for 360 and after playing this demo, I'm glad I did. I love the combat and the dialogue changes that were made. I think the visuals look great, as expected. Overall it is a very impressive demo. I'd pre order this game if I didn't already based on this demo.
For those who play on PC I could understand your disappointment in the combat, but I much more prefer console gaming anymore. Two thumbs up here.

Thats because its not an RPG these games like DA and ME need a new category like Action /StoryTelling , RPGs they surely are not.
Calm down there.
I never said the story of DA2 won't be good, in fact I'm pretty sure it will be good.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."

He who keeps his cool best wins.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
