In RIFT the faction decision is actually kinda hard compared to other MMOs, because they didn't go for the usual good/bad or nice/ugly scheme.
As a matter of fact, the headstart will soon begin and I still don't really know which side to take, although I gave both factions a try in the beta. Usually I would have picked the guardians instantly, but when it comes to the basic ideology-conflict (blind god belief vs. "f*** 'em, we got technology") between them, I tend to go with the Defiants.
However, while the time-travel stuff at the beginning of the Defiants was quite nice, I liked Silvermood much more than Freemarch, although that probably shouldn't influence my decision, since these are only the starting zones and we will certainly all be meeting in the same zones later on. (I can't say, because I haven't played above lvl 16, so that I will still have many things to discover and won't spoiler a lot of things for me)
So anyway, I still don't know. Feeling says Guardias, mind says Defiants. Whatcha gonna do? But I've got a whole work-day left to figure that out^^
Am going to go Guardians. Because i played defiant in all the betas and want it to be totally fresh i haven't tried the guardian side at all. Plus i gathered that a lot of people are going defiant and i have always preferred to go on the underdog side. Also from what i have read Guardians are actually more of the "bad guys" and i have always been the bad guys.... its funny how the colour of the cote of arms makes people instantly assume that Defiants are the bad guys because it has the colour red in it.

Empire as The Guardian, and Rebel as Defiant. The Guardian tried to kill all the Defiant because they believed in other things, just like Empire wants to force everyone to believe in them and control by them, but somehow Rebel just doesn't like to listen and they believe in Jedi!!
Well but stick to the point, Empire FTW !! xD Yup I am going to be Guardian! (But I do realized in beta that Defiant has better character model, at least for Human Female Character!! xD )
Guardian. If you explore the lore of Rift, as I understand it, it was the Defiants that caused the final destruction of Telara even though they make you think it was the Guardians.
I liked playing both sides during beta. I settled on Guardian for HS because I prefer the first two Guardian zones, level progression to 20ish is less linear for Guardians and the trend still seems to be heavily for Defiant, which will mean quicker Warfront queue times for Guardians.
Another plus for me, I prefer the Life and Fire Rifts vs. the Death and Water Rifts in the 7-20 zones. Also, Gloamwood, the Guardian 20-25 zone, has a great, dark forest vibe and in addition to Planar Invasions also has Werewolf invasions!

Since I'm sick of the sight of the Defiant starting area, I'll be rolling Guardian this time round.

I played it safe and went Guardian throughout beta, didn't touch Defiant specifically so it would be nice and fresh for me come headstart/launch.
