I login and find that it is day!  YAHOO!! I can see!  I log back out and grab my tamer character.  This one is in a town called Vadda.  I quickly hurry to the gates and see one yellow flagged fellow newb so I say hello.  He is standing naked except for a metal helm on his head which I thought was funny.   I see him locked in mortal combat with a weasel (small ferret like creature).  After chuckling a bit to myself I ask if he needs help and he says no.. sure enough he manages to slay the foul beast just a sliver before dying.

I decide to try and tame one of the weasels myself.  They are mentioned on the forums as a good starter mob for taming.   Anyhow, I walk up to the target and start the taming process.  It goes something like this:

    wave arms in front

    "Here weasel"

    wave arms in front

    "good weasel"

Weasel has hit for you X damage (ruh rogh Shaggy!)

    "Your the best weasel ever"

You have failed to tame the weasel

Weasel has hit you for x damage

Weasel has hit you for x damage

    (click tame button again)

    wave arms in front

    "good weasel"

Weasel has hit you for X damage

    "Here weasel"

Weasel has hit you for X damage you are now in mercy mode

OK.. so at this point I am on my knees helpless as the weasel has put me in mercy mode.  He sits there staring at me with his evil eyes.. and then wanders off.  Eventually I gain enough strength to stand up.   Hmm.. that didn't go well.   So I decide to rest up and regain my health.   Of course.. I realize that this character does not know how to sit down yet (Hes only 34 years old).. so I head to town, find the fighter tutor and learn how to sit.   I plop down and start resting.  I go, grab a drink.. come back to the keyboard and find that my health bar has moves maybe 2 millimeters.  I guess I am not skilled enough in sitting for it to be effective.

Not wanting to waste the daylight training my "sit on your ass" skill I head back out.  I had seen a rabbit running by while I was playing possum for the weasel.   Soon enough I find the rabbit and the taming process starts all over again.  The rabbit doesn't attack me though.. instead he runs away (despite my calling him the bestest rabbit ever). I try to keep up with him but since I run slower than a toddler and have the same endurance.. I get the "target out of range" message quite frequently and then have to start from scratch.

After around 10 minute of rabbit chaseing I sweet-talk one into being my bestest buddy!  I now have a pet!  I quickly rename him to "FluffyDoombringer" and head back to town to flaunt my pet!   Sadly, the rabbit which I was unable to keep up with, now seems to have broken legs as he cannot keep up with me.  EVery few seconds I have to stop and let him catch up.  Eventually I make it inside the town and head to the bank area.   Damnit.. not a soul in sight for me to make jealous of my furry friend.    OK.. let me try the craftng area...

As I start to walk to the crafters.. I get the saddest message ever "Your pets loyalty is too low and he leaves"

I scream "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" and search for "FluffyDoombringer" but he is gone... never to be seen again.  I cannot bring myself to go back out and look for another companion as the wound of my loss is so great.  Instead, I grab a pickaxe.. wack a tree.. and tab out to leave this message and make some lunch.

    More to follow!

lol man you crack me up, nice read. I knew MO was not my cup of tea, but this pretty much confirms it again image

Did you know you have to feed the rabbit? Nice reading anyway, thanks for the "The MO experience of a skeptic". It reminds me of my experience of Countter Striker. I was constantly killed by the enemy. It was not fun at all. CS was the worst game ever made.

No Sir... I did not know that.. nor do I see how to do so.   The trainer who gave me the taming skill never mentioned taming.  Here is the entirety of his text:

    image

    and

    image

No mention of feeding... I even check the "Creature Control Panel":

    image

No feeding there either.  So... nope.. I did NOT know I was supposed to feed my beloved "Fluffy Doombringer".  Can you or someone else explain where I get the food from and how I get him to eat it?  And how do I know when he is hungry? Do humans have food too?  Because I haven't eatten on any of my characters in 3 days.  I hope they don't disapear on me too!

Sadly.. the game was down for an extended period of time and as you can see form the pictures it is turning into night again.. sigh.. so taming Fluffy2 will have to wait again.  Back to the tree for me!

Edit to add: Do you mean graze?  Do they have to Graze every so often?  I wish I knew that before hand.  Silly Fluffy was so hungry he couldnt last for the trip from the gate to the bank.. poor little guy!

FYI here is the screen which I promised to upload from yesterday's journey.  It's taken after exploiters killed a few yellow flagged newbs in town (apparently the exploit also doesn;t give them a murdercount...)

The hunger system is not in yet for human. For pets you type /feed to feed. You don't have to have any food in your inventory to feed a pet. The MO virtual realism has its limits, I believe it will be get expanded as hunger system is introduced.

I am not sure if you can get some help by pushing H key. For MO forum readers (or "fanboys") there already is plenty information om how the game mechanism works but for players who never have heard of the game or for a long time skeptic like yourself, the information may be not as readily available. SV has much to do to improve it. I am at least glad that the tutors are of some help. I thought it was lame in the beginning.

/me wonders when/if slapshot will get a torch to combat the dreadful, most evil of all... dark of the night

Really. I haven't made a single coin yet because anything I find or harvest so far is apparently unappealing to every NPC I've talked to. Is it even possible to gain coin from PvE in the time frame of the 14 day trial?

Wood and mushrooms can be sold to NPC. Cutting wood is the best thing to do at the very beginning since you raise your stats, mostly strength, at the same time.

Slapshot, have you noticed in your travels that the sky never changes? I'm actually looking for confirmation of this, 'cause I'm not sure if it's just me that's noticing it... or thinks I'm noticing it.

The area I'm in - Toxia I think it's called? - always has the same sky, morning, afternoon, evening... Clear weather, rainy weather (it's almost always raining there I notice)... same sky. Would be kinda disappointing if, with the extensive weather system they speak of the game having, they forgot to add some dynamic element to the sky to go along with it.

Also noticing an odd inconsistency in navigating the terrain. I can run up some surfaces that are about 45 degrees, but can't even stand still on others that are barely 25 degrees... I slide right down.

Definitely some odd quirks in this game. Though it has its charms, too. Hoping I get to see more of what it offers before the trial is up.

Nope.. I checked Help and no mention about feeding at all.

Do you know of anyway in game that would show me such a command existed?  I even checked the forums for "Taming Guide" and the one I found does not mention /feed.  I went to Mortalwiki.com and did not see any mention of /feed...

If you hadn't told me I would never have known and would have just assumed that my poor beloved FluffyDoombringer let because of lack of love from me!

Are there any other commands like that I should know about?  For taming or any other career?

No I did not notice that but will look next time.  I have not seen raid yet in Fab nor Vadda.  I did hear thunder once but never saw rain.  I was looking for it because it used to rain indoors so I wanted to see if that was fixed yet.

    Ahh okay.

Well, I can confirm the "raining indoors" part, at least in my experience. Went into a couple small buildings while it was raining, and it just kept raining, full blast, the entire time, right through a solid roof.

The weather system and rain have much to improve. MO does not have clear sunny sky, and clear sunny sky is I want most of the time. The rain indoor must be a problem deep in the engine core and SV will wait Epic to solve it. But compare to the sky in DF, I will definitively prefer MO.

Hmm... I think it's more on SV's end to be honest. There are other MMOs and, indeed, games out there using the Unreal Engine that have rain, snow, etc.. and it doesn't go through solid roofs.

They're using Unreal Engine 3, if I'm not mistaken, and in that engine (as with previous versions) there are volumes you can set up for various things... Volumes can be set up for certain things to happen when a player enters them. In this case they could have a volume fill up any indoor space and have no outdoor weather effects render when inside it.

From the looks of it, though, they're not handling it in such an eloquent or controlled manner, and are instead sorta "brute forcing" it as the last step in the rendering pipeline, so the rain effectively gets rendered on top of everything else... giving some weird side effects (like rain drops that seem to continue falling long after they should have hit the ground if you're looking down at it).. It would would make sense since they're using a refractive effect with it, and so, of course, it needs something to refract.

http://www.mortalwiki.org/wiki/Taming   It's the "/feed petname" command. It raises your pet's loyalty. Fluffy didn't leave for lack of love, but from lack of loyalty.  You can find that page by clicking on "2011-01-17 : Updated the Taming-guide" under news on the front page or by typing "taming" into the search bar @ www.mortalwiki.org.

You could also try http://mowiki.wikia.com/wiki/Taming or http://mortal-info.wikia.com/wiki/Taming, but those are not very well organized.

P.S. I imagine you didn't find any helpful information at www.mortalwiki.com, since the only info I can get from that site is that purchasing that domain name would cost me $495.

P.P.S. To take the issue of the table (hopefully): Yes, I do think a free trial should have waited until there was a tutorial, or this kind of information was easily discoverable within the game in some other way.

Thanks for the comment. You may be right. This give me some hope: at least SV can make it better. The rain brings immersion but it do not have any functions yet. Raining in houses is a visual irrirtation for me. But it does not break anything. When rain causes damages they have to fix it.

Press H for help, yeah its kinder hard for noobs mostly like yourself because of the steepe learning curve and the game wanting players to learn things for themselves, not handing everything on a plate but I saw a link for tutorial videos on the launcher itself so you might not be so noobie after watching the tuturioal video but if you need help with something, the best thing to do is ask another player :) because mo is about interacting with players and well your lucky that theres players who can teach you, As I had to learn it the hard way :) but it was a fun experince for sure, not knowing anything and finding out by trial and error :D but it was never a big deal for me and I found out pretty easy myself and now theres tutors ingame and lots of videos and guides so I don't know why its hard for you to understand the game mechinics.

I suggest taking a course from the tatar mater academy, its a organistion within the game of volunteer experinced vets that help new people out or people wanting to get more experince in a particaluar area of the game.

    heres the link, http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/56405-talar-matar-academy.html

the community within mortal online is one of the nicest I ever known, going as far as creating a organsion of people from different guilds that help people out, great project and if you need a better experince or some experince then I suggest checking this out because they take on all types of people.

    Day 3 Wrapup:

Unfortunately I once again had limited playtime due to the server instability.  Instead of an in character description of my adventures I will just highlight a few additional comments.

    1.  HELP THE NEW PLAYERS!   I gave a few ideas on how to do this in my earlier posts.. give them a new player guild or new player chat channel.  SOMETHING.  For the most part the community seems very helpful.  There are always bad apples though and those bad apples can  ruin the experience.  Here is an example.  This new guy was asking how to train his combat skills up.   The 3 geared players around him told him to simply practice on NPCs and he wouldn't get flagged unless he attacked another player.   I tried to warn him, but are you gonna believe another 1/2 naked newb or 3 geared and guilded players?   Here is the result:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arcKlrPjpKw

I know.. welcome to the world and all that.  Bottom line is that those 3 may have had a nice laugh but that's probably one less prospective customer for a company gasping for air.

    2.  FIX server stability.  I don't think this needs more explaining.  When you have trials and the game is crashing as often as 3 times an hour (maybe more but 3 is my experience) you are NOT going to keep most of those players unless the rest of the new player experience is incredible.. and it's not.

    3. FIX the lag/interpolation/prediction system.   Despite what we have been told.. it still stinks.  Here are two videos taken yesterday.  In one you can see a player blinking around (sorry for the dark vid but it is what it is).  The other video shows someone flying and leaping.  This guy did it all over the city.  I followed him but everytime he saw me watching he ran away.  I do not know if he was doing something on his end or if it was lag related but the video is self explanitory.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke8JJ-gcZxQ

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9kFkJjYezE

One more showing the same thing today (not created by me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yFELrnhBL4

    4.  COMMUNICATE!   They started a trial and there is no welcome message.. no post from the team at Starvault.. nothing except this announcement: http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/59360-mortal-online-free-trial.html

That is further compounded by the fact that they all took the weekend off right after starting this trial.  Did they learn NOTHING form launch?  They did the very same thing at launch.  They released on Thursday and took the weekend off to "rest".  It caused all kinds of issues and bad feelings with the customers.  Now with the free trials they did the very same thing.  How can they all go home the day after starting this last ditch effort to save the game knowing that the server has a tendency to sputter and crash under stress?

OK.. rant is done for now.   Hopefully I can get some gametime in and go back to the regular in-character updates.

Yeah, I was thinking ,after crashing back to login for the 6th time in about 3 hours yesterday, that they really have probably shot themselves in the foot by having  a trial, while such server issues exist.

It's seriously not impressive, at all, to be playing and find yourself suddenly logged out every 30-40 minutes. Oddly, when I logged back in one of the times, I was at about 80% health... and I hadn't attacked anything or anyone. I was still in the starting area. Very odd, that.

This is going to sound rather sad... but this game here, CoP, with its very old engine (the original Torque engine, same tech that powered the original Tribes game), 3rd party assets and very independent design took the creators about 3 years... and they have a more solid, stable and - dare I say it - enjoyble play experience than I've had in MO so far. Unfortunately, CoP seems to have fallen into red-headed stepchild status with its developers, and they don't seem to be doing anything more with it.

I've had that too and discovered it was from leveling my Constitution which doesn't change you current HP but does increase the max.

I've read that the Torque engine is built in a way to make network stability much easier. So I'm guessing the Unreal Engine is harder to turn into a MMO and SV is haven't a really hard time making it happen hince why they often have to goto Epic to get help.

I don't know if the trial is a complete disaster but from the 5 or so new players I've seen 1 literally ragequit and I haven't seen the other 3. I personally think this is a really terrible game as it is now though still I come back due to curiousity/ exploration.

  • NoobgrenNoobgren Member Posts: 102

Sad to see SV fucking everything up, especially since this is probably MO's last chance of getting any substantial number of subscribers.

I mean, what the hell are they thinking releasing a free trial when the game hasn't had any real improvements since launch - except some minor features and shiny graphics? Why don't they make sure the server can handle the influx of trial players? Why don't they make sure the trial players get the best possible experience instead of getting killed by exploiters?

This whole trial business is a clear sign of desperation, and it will probably cost them dearly. I used to have high hopes for MO but now I just feel SV are unable to pull it through.

yeah I was lol, the guy that wanted to know about taming, but its still good infomation and prediction/interpoition is a different experince for alot of random people, some it can be quite bad as showned in the vidoes and some there can be a very little delay but all in all its not server side so you can just hit the person on your side of the screen and the same for them even if its a bit off, but thats the current combat, kinda predicting yourself for those who experince ploblems, but for the majority of us we experince combat like this, which may have its hitch cups here and there but it usually smooth enough to be able to block an imcoming strike and strike back

heres some ingame footage from wessex members taking part in combat, but the prediction system needs to be improved thats for sure.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAh2RQDnQp0&feature=related

also kinda depends on the day aswell and load on the server and the amount of people in a node i think, but it needs to be better thats for sure, its kinda disappointing that the combat can be so o.o but hopefully one day it be better.......

About them taking the weekend off, I think they are kinda stupid for taking days off after every major patch or anything released and I wish that they would take any other day off. or get the game in a good state before going out on the weekend but I bet it was like, ok guys, we get this out, and you can have the weekend off for your hard work, but then the worse happened and we had some very very bad server crashes which has not been like this since the early days of release which is quite annoying, which was supposed to be a memory leak and will be patched today.

Concerning the game needing some new people and it needs to get advertised, like every other game even if the game is abit buggy, mmos need as much money as possible, and with svs small team, it be nice if they could get some more people on thier team which hopefully can improves the game faster.

If combat and prediction are so super for most people, why did the CEO of SV say they may have to scrap the whole system a couple of weeks ago? Why do the players constantly complain about it? If it is all working fine, why were both tournies cancelled due to "the state of the game"?

The combat system does not work, virtually everyone agrees on that including SV, so what evidence can you provide for you opinion?

You are claiming that the 100-200 people playing are a problem for the server to handle? Didn't Henrik say the hardware could support 27k concurrent connections?

This happens every ... single ... time they patch. It is completely unprofessional for an MMO company. Plus the server crashes several times a day every day even at it's best.

MO is not "a bit buggy", it's mostly flat out broken. Here's a thought, you list the systems that work properly and then I will list the systems that don't. Which list will be longer do you think?

Funny how every other developer using UE doesn't have MO's problems.

Bottom line is that SV are not very good programmers. Their prior experience was in simple modding and any developer will tell you that is chalk and cheese to MMO development.
