So tell me, what's the player population cap? How many players on YOUR server?

MMO.MaverickMMO.Maverick Member CommonPosts: 7,619

Alright, the same typical launch experiences as with any new AAA MMO launch, full servers, queues filling up, hopefully not as long as it happened with the Aion launch.

But this is the ideal time to check what your server can handle. I didn't check when I was in beta so I don't know if it's possible to do a player count. but if so: how many players do you count logged in at your server? And do you notice any form of increased lag because of it?

Those that managed to figure out the online player population on your server, let us know/

Would it be best to test this in a few hours i suspect that the servers may have some sort of throttling system to prevent everyone logging into starter areas at the same time.

So when people leave starter area it frees up another spot on the server.

In other words the servers may not be full yet and just throttling people.

This game has extremely linear content and everyone is filtered into the same leveling path the entire way so they have to cap populations much lower than the server can handle because otherwise they run into mob spawn issues. There is basically one zone for every level range per side and that is all of the content, no choice in the matter at all.

Actually, sounds a lot like Aion, heck it even sounds like Darkfall, they throttled player onboarding as well :)

According to this interview linked below, each server can only handle about 1500 players. So take 21 US servers and there is only 31,500 playing in the US. I would think there would be far more, but I am going by the statement made below.

shyntyrr asks: 2.How large of a population will the servers be able to support (per server)?

    <%chamberlin> We're targeting 1500 players per server

All servers hit cap today. I was trying to get into Sunrest and I was in the 986 position. I would think there is some kind throttling of a sort to keep the servers from bogging or crashing if the statement still holds.

Only 1500 people per server  Oo   Wow that's small, 750 per side...dam.   So there must be more people in que than there are people ingame.

The 1500 per server was a number given during early beta for the beat servers. It is no accurate now. The servers hold much more than that now.

Sorry, so not true. Even by level 13 I had more choices of where to go than I needed to fill my time. If one quest area was a little crowded, I just went and did other quests. Add in Rifts, Warfronts and grinding (which I proved last week was completely viable XP) and even on day one you aren't stuck on any "rails".

Hmm, but that's all indirect guessing, no concrete figures or measuring. There's no way to do a player population count like you can do in LotrO, Aoc and other MMO's?

Correct. Truncation blocks a realistic chance of an accurate count. A lot? It's pretty moot unless you want to try amd rain on their parade. Safe to say it's a healthy launch, see where it goes from there.

The que has allot more to do with not flooding the starting zone then it does server caps. The starting zones allready had hundreds of people in them. The servers are obviously capable of holding thousands but they cant very well let everyone in at the same time.

In AoC and LotrO it was trunked too, but you could specify it to class and level range, like say L1-10 or L15-20. This way you could still determine the number of logged in players, it took me about 5 min or so. I didn't check in beta though, there's no means to do a more specific selection count in Rift?

Since no good has ever come from /who counts, I don't see why any MMO would bother to put them - or any other speculative measurement tool - into the game anymore.

Actually that 1500 maximum players per server rumour is false and was quoted out of context, here's the link:

    "Hi, All!

I've seen a few questions floating around about the servers and I wanted to take a few minutes to get you some answers.

Can you make a characters from both factions on the same server?

Yes. There are no limits on this.

Is that the whole list of servers?

This is the Head Start list of servers. More servers of various types will be opened as needed. Watch for announcements here and on Twitter and Facebook as we open them.

Can each shard only hold 1500 players?

I keep seeing references to a dev saying that each sever would only hold 1500 people. The actual quote was from a very old IRC chat where one of our devs was talking about numbers for that current beta as the servers were opened. We do not release specific numbers about our servers. But we saw higher numbers with each beta and the same thing applies to release. The 1500 rumor is false. "

I think that with a two faction game they will target something in range of 3,000 concurrent users. The more people you have the larger your game area would have to be in order to support a natural flow of the players. With the present, somewhat limited, number of zones for a particular level range I don't think they will try for anything more than that. Of course this is totally different thing than the number of players per server as after the launch any game will be happy to see even 1/10th of their player base online -- even during the peak time.

At one point on Wolfsbane server (one of the most popular NA PVE servers) I was number 4983 in queue with an esitimated time of 23 hours.  I of course was smart enough to say "next server please" and moved on to Alsbeth (one of the new servers added to handle long queues) and was only #283 in line and got in in 11 minutes.

  • HazukiStyleHazukiStyle Member UncommonPosts: 49

As has been stated  - the 1500 server capacity was increased throughout the betas.  I believe in the open beta they more than doubled that capacity.

On the EU server I started on we have yet to experience queues; it is however absolutely packed ingame - as you'd expect.  Just about every questing hub has had hundreds of players at it.  As you can imagine the amount of Rifts ingame last night was insaneand their must have been several raid groups at each one.  The community manager, Abigale, has stated that they will open more servers soon for the headstart atleast.   I believe the US is slightly harder hit when it comes to server queues; EU seems relatively fine.
