I played this game very briefly in Open Beta, loved the visuals, the game, the class system and so on and so forth. My only question is whether the story is worth it. I want an MMO with a really good, solid storyline to follow throughout the game.
Using WoW as the baseline for storyline, with games such as LOTRO representing a good story, and EVE representing...well...no story, where does Rift fit in?

Bah i guess that if you really want a nice story you will need to wait for star wars
this game is nice but for me its another run to point A bring me back 10 heads, run to point B kill this monster
after a couple of missions, i stopped reading... but its just me
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
My Review Manifesto
Follow me on Twitter if you dare.
To me, the story is little more than a cobbled-together hodgepodge of fantasy cliches hacked together to accomodate the game mechanics, particularly the questionable necessity of having two warring factions. It's shallow, lacking any real sense of logic and cohesiveness. Telara feels more like a setting for the game to take place in than it does an immersive world.
I love building concept characters with a sense of purpose. In Rift, you make and play "toons".
"Soloists and those who prefer small groups should never have to feel like they''re the ones getting the proverbial table scraps, as it were." - Scott Hartsman, Senior Producer, Everquest II
"People love groups. Its a fallacy that people want to play solo all the time." - Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, Rift
That depends on whether or not you read everything in a typical MMO.
Rift takes the traditional route to present its quests and storyline: NPC gives you text and an objective to kill stuff with a reward upon returning.
There are some specific story quests but in general you should not expect detailed and coherent plotlines throughout the whole game, though every zone has its themes (most people are not aware what these are though).
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Is the story worth it you ask...
Are you worth it?
The story revolves around you and your side of the conflict which is epic and sprawling. You will find a nice main plotline entrenched within the leveling that takes you deeper into the story the further you go. The religion versus technology part of things is really well done and plays out on both side with flare.
The real main course in this whole thing is of course....PvP. As you get past your safe zone at around level 20 you will find open world pvp conflict on top of all the crazy PvE elements. Take the time to get to know the story and you will most likely be pleasently surprized and drawn into this world more than if you just tapdanced around the story.
You mentioned LOTRO and its quest line, rift follows that standard of questing. you have the story line and then quests that give you rewards. they arent as "epic" as LOTRO's that ive seen, but the lore is there if you want it.
I find Rift´s lore very very interesting and well done. I´m pretty sure you will enjoy it.
Plus gameplay is just amazingly fun!!
Always read the small print.
As a rule of thumb, I read all quest text. And from what I remember this game highlights the important quests anyway.
If you want a story read a book. This is a game meant to be played - story is good though!
I read books too...
A good way to put it. There's not much in the way of character stories to follow, that progress as you go, from my experience. They attempt to make things relate, but aside from the spirit guide, nothing really seems to follow you, or vice versa.
