Before I Buy... is this worth it?

I've watched a few videos of people playing, but a lot of my friends seem somewhat middle of the road in their opinion of this game.  I heard there were lots of problems, but I'm not really sure what they were/are?  I'm very into Batman/Superman (not really that into the rest of the DC World).

I just want to know if this game is good to play on the PC, lots of people keep sayng it's more consoley.. and all my friends who do have it have it on PS3.

Also curiuos to know how big the world is, like Gotham and Metropolis.  Are they actually huge or pretty small for "cities" in an mmo?

I didn't run into the "lots of problems" you mention, but that can mean anything really.  If you mean technical, the game ran fine for me with very little tech issues.  If you mean other in game playing issues, again, I don't really remember any.   I'm a casual player and enjoyed the game, but there wasn't much to it in my opionion.  The two cities were a good size, and there were fun things to the game, especially the fighting system.

The game overall was fun for me but I did get to level cap rather quickly and wasn't even rushing.  I took my time and enjoyed the game but then started to get bored towards the higher levels.  I cancelled my sub but hope that down the road with more content and level cap increases, I may be coming back.

It will depend on your reasons for playing the game.  Right now the PvP seems pretty largely unbalanced and has a number of issues.  Some of the PvE missions have some other bugs cropping up and there have been some instances of an underlying system issue with targeting and combos,  but the game is a lot of fun otherwise.

If you're going to be a PvE / Raider,  go for the gear and fight some of the toughest battles I've fought in an MMO with your friends, then this game is for you.  If you're a hardcore PvP lovin' player,  you'll find the game somewhat frustrating at this time.

The cities are pretty big though,  very detailed,  lots of areas to explore.  If you love the IP then you'll likely love the game.

:edit: Oh and its fantastic on the PC,  you can play with the PS3 or 360 control, or the M&K,  so its really your choice, whereas PS3 players don't have as many.  The game runs much better on PC too... (if you have a good PC that is)

Well, i have been playing for around 2 weeks now, while i have not hit any of the end game raid, since i am still at level 21

but i can tell you how it will go from level 1 to around 20, Quests are basically fun at the beginning, also you will be mostly playing solo if you aren't playing with your IRL friend or if you arent in a League

The city is big enough to explore, and a lot of fun if you are on a PvP server, because sometimes you can encounter some random battle between Hero and Villain, and you can just jumped in at any time, well at least it was fun for a while

Combat is awesome in this game, as well as the skills, for this part, it's a very damn good one, it's very fast paced, as well as a lot of cool Combo for you to use, i would probably say that the strongest asset of this game is the combat

down side of this game is that, the community is not very open, you would ask something on the chat channel, the odds are, 95% of the time, no one will answer for you

also, if you arent' really the biggest fans of DC, i dont think this game will give you the urge to log in

well all in all, DCUO is a decent mmo, it's quite fresh, and if you have nothing else to play, DCUO will be fun

but i still believe that anyone who isn't into DC stuffs, wont last long, that's at least what happened to most of my friends that followed another friend who liked DCUO, but only that we all just lost interest after a while

    So What Now?

I like that it has a console feel. The fighting is top notch.  Going across the city as acrobat is fun.  Phenomenal graphics. So basically, if you like having fun in an MMO then yes, it's worth it.

Grab a trial from someone and decide for yourself.

Lots of people defend the game, considering it to be the next big thing because of its combat.  Others (like myself) criticize it for the signficiant lack of content as well as some bad design decisions.  There are plenty of discussions on the forum, but I advise you not to buy it blindly --get a trial code from someone on the forum.

I like the game for what it is...

    • Action oriented combat

    • Easy Levelling

    • Quite a bit of team stuffs to do

    • Really fun combat!

    • Did I mension the really fun action consoley combat?

So yes...I find it enjoyable.  Like all other MMOs its a lot funner when youre not teamed with noobs. Like say...Damage dealers who are in healing stance yet refuse to heal and roll on tank gear.

    Seriously...Thats not fun.  AT ALL.

There is no lack of content in the least.

The problem is its just very repetitive. There is tons of content that can easily occupy a gamers day.

Its very fun, i think its worth it, im still willing to pay a monthly fee however im playing very casually and i know that the game will need constant updates to keep my interest.

This is just a fun fast paced action game.

I play on the PC and i love the mouse/keyboard controls personally.

Metropolis and Gotham are both very very very big.

Personally I would hold off for a few more content updates before buying it, since as it stands content-wise you'll be lucky if that lasts you the first free month before you hit the wall.

Just simply running/flying/climbing around the world is fun for a bit though, add that in with the PvP server and sharing the same maps with the opposite side right out of the gate, it can make for quite a few hours of non-questing fun (bit of a starting out griefer/camper hump to get over though..).

But imo that excitement wore off relatively quick and the combat felt repetitive after only a few days (awefully one sided too and most fights that ended the same way, by either getting out numbered or winning because of more numbers, the world always needs more heroes :P irl too lol).

Which brings me back to the game lasting you the first free month, if you're lucky.

At the end of that time period you'll likely feel burnt out and finished with it entirely, because of having nothing do and getting tired of aimlessly roaming to rely on random battles to have any fun whatsoever. Not much else can redeem a game once that feeling sets in, and for me that happened about 2 weeks in.

So my advice is of course, just wait until there is more to offer. No need to rush in right now, it will still be there later, or else you run the risk of getting overly bored and ruining the game as a whole for yourself.

I'd say its worth it. There is plenty of content to get your monies worth. Whether its enough to warrant a sub is debatable but i have enjoyed my time in DCUO.

    NO

Nice game, fun to play but not sure I will bother to sub past the intial free 30 days.  Which then makes me question the value of the game as a whole.

  • AutorockAutorock Member UncommonPosts: 48

Long term I don't know if it's worth it. But at this rate I can see myself having fun with the game despite its flaws for at least a few months, which is worth it to me.

So you come here to get advice from strangers and not take the words of your friends? From what I have read and heard is that the game is good not great but good. Even there if you play for 30 days then you probally got you money's  worth out of it.

Kind of a hostile response eh?  I came here to get advice from strangers because I wanted to see how people playing the PC version of this game feel about it since as I mentioned, all my friends play it on PS3.  I also wanted a broader spectrum of feedback from more hardcore mmo players since they aren't usually the types to play mmos in general.

My current worry is that the PC servers are low since I saw someone post about that the other day.  I hope that's not the case.

i third this notion...its was great fun for about 4 weeks..after that i'll tell you i had 3 capped players 2 with t1 gear..pvp servers wer great fun ..but its way to fast imo..there fore i quit..btw i was on ps3..and the interface was horrid like my spelling lol

I'd say go ahead and buy it, It's the most fun I've had in an mmo in a long long time.  I can see how it would get boring if you roll on a pve server though (or if you play for 5 hours a day).

Great game....an mmo that's actually fun rather than just time consuming is a rarity worth experiencing. The lengthy grind of traditional mmo is there but it's optional rather than forced, which again seems a step forward imo. The difficulty level ramps up for endgame but the gear you get brings that back to manageable levels so at all times the incentive remains with the player, the choice or what to do and when remains with the player.... I think the sad part comes from traditionalist mmo players who seemingly enjoy the masochism of the enforced grind for grinds sake and therefore are left bewildered by dcuos approach of making it optional

No do not bother with it mainly because SOE work at a snails pace trying to fix stuff come back in about 2 years maybe 3 for a decent game with good features. Who am I kidding no dont, buy City of heroes instead.

lol City of Heroes?  CoH is a fun game and all, but it's sooooo repetative.  DC is way more fun than CoH image

When you can buy the box for the price of 1 months sub, it will be worth it IMO, since there's nowhere near enough content to stay entertained beyond that period.

Its first update barely matches up with the content production of any other MMO's first post-launch update.  Considering that many people were promised lots of new content monthly, and folk got neither "lots" nor "monthly", all signs, for me, point to "wait indefinitely".

  • ste2000ste2000 Member EpicPosts: 6,194

    To the OP

If you are looking for a MMORPG, this is not it.

But if you are looking for a multiplayer game with a month worth content then give it a try.

Ultimate Electronics is going out of business -- PC software is 40% off.  I pondered buying DCUO for just a moment, but wound up leaving it on the shelf.
