Ok, so I will try to do this every 10 levels in order to give my views on the game and provide any hints that I may have. I also hope that others will post their impressions of their first 10 levels and any hints that they may have.
To start with, I made a mage (Guardian) and began my quest. Character customization is pretty good. Wish they had more hair styles and face markings, but that is very minor (very, very minor)
During the first 10 levels, the quests and progression is rather linear, and I haven't seen any 'openess' yet. Instead you move from one quest hub to another. These quests are well done, and keep the game moving forward at a relatively good clip. In addition, you make your first 10 levels pretty quick, so don't expect to grind anything, because the quests move you and give you the experience so that you can keep going.
Within my first 10 levels, I was able to choose 3 souls. I chose Necro, Warlock, and Dominator. All of which are offensive souls. I would recommend that of these three you may want to take a support/defencive soul to help balance out the offensive souls. I know I will get more souls after 10, but thats my recommendation for your first three.
Rifts are another thing which you are going to encounter. There are really two spots that are designed to introduce the character to Rifts. (really 3, but the 1st one is more of an 'artifical' Rift designed to give you a stumbling block). The Areas have quest givers who give you Rift Quests and gets you into the action. The Rifts at this point werent much fun for me, because there are so many ppl zerging em I couldn't really see what I was doing. I was just tab/attack tab/attack tab/attack. Half the time my spell wouldn't even go off before it was time to tab again. I think this will get better as the player base begins to spread out. You do get some good rewards, so I would definitely recommend doing em.
Overall, I had a good time playing. I can definitely compare this to WAR because it has the same feel to me. You can argue whether its better or not than WAR, which isn't the point of this particular thread, but I definitely see similarities and feel.
Other things:
Its not really intuitive to add additional bars to your GUI. To do this, go to settings, and select the (I forget the name of the tab) and there is an option to add bars and side bars. You cannot do it from the GUI layout screen or from your GUI.
There are probably other things which i've forgotten, but I'm sure others will provide more hints.

Settings/Interface/Action bars
That's the place to go if you need to add more bars.
thx, for the life of me I couldn't remember it, and I didn't wanna wait in a 30 minute line to finish the post

It is a really fun game when you have 2 hours to spare.
Lol, i played all the way to level 42 and done every instance on both factions and every quest in the game on both factions plus all pvp content.
Come back when you have something interesting to say post level 42 because up till that level the game is boring as hell and just one big railroad.
You think your first ten levels was linear, well ill spoil the fun for you and tell you nothing changes at least to level 42.
People actually unlike yourself (And I sadly, although I will never admit it) Like Linear these days *sigh*
They play WoW don't they and it is Linear as hell. Even more after Cataclysm. And yes I hate the hell out of linear progression but *sigh* what else is it to play that is half ass decent these days. RIFT will retain there players and I wouldn't be surprised to see 3 million subs in 3 months...Time will tell I guess.. *sigh*
At this point in my life, I don't mind linear for this type of game. Why? Because I have EQ's Fippy Darkpaw server for awesomeness (still very fun) and UO for non-linearness (not talking about current live UO). So, I don't see a point in a game like RIFT to introduce anything else. However, I certainly would advise future games to maybe go a different route....but for Rift it doesn't seem relevant (as it falls into a very WoW-like game).

Linear, non linear, open world, instance, Full loot pvp, no loot pvp,
All that doesn't matter, the only thing that ever matters is...is the game fun. If it is. it succeeded.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
I'm also level 10 and having quite some fun as a marksman. Quests are very rewarding itemwise. The game is getting harder tho and I'm looking forward to the group content. The first RIFT's I've seen were quite some fun tho and a nice addition to the xp.
The only downside atm are the queues. But I'll life with that
Eaglix
I rolled a Mage defiant. Played for 3 hours last night made it to level 12 mainly questing.
I found in PQ's err sorry Rifts that if I use my instadots and just spam them while I tab target I do alright :P. At this level the mobs don't have enough HP to actually cast a spell and hit one. Even the big boss at the end.
Yesterday there must have been 70 people at the one Rift I did.
Crazy. Fun game though. Hopefully it can hold my interest for longer than a month. Something only EQ and EVE have ever been able to do.
Make a difference!

You should get a little exercise so you don't have to pause so much to catch your breath while talking.
The quest lines are linear. Some people will (for some reason) argue otherwise, but they are. For me, this is good. I didn't run into a quest that I should have read until level 27 or so.
However, there are other means of progression...you don't need to do that many quests if you don't want to. Rift hunting, war fronts, mob grinding and craft quests all contribute to your XP pool. You do need the initial quests to get out of the tutorial area, and the quests for your additional 5 souls, but beyond that, I don't think there are any other necessary quests. The only problem with picking the quests that would give you additional XP for what you're doing anyway is that you don't know which ones are which, and I think some quests unlock other quests in quest hubs. I could be wrong about that.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Month-3 WoW player who's grown bored of WoW. Haven't cancelled my 2 accounts, but have been strongly considering it for at least 3-4 months.
Tried GW, AoC, CoH, DCUO, Eve, WAR as well as some others I'm probably missing.
Just ran the last couple of days of the last beta, and that convinced me well enough that it would be worth buying RIFT for at least the 30-day free period, see if any gross issues popped up (like AoC) or it just grew stale (WAR, etc.).
So I ran up to about lvl 15 in beta, enjoyed the hell out of it. Sure, a lot of it was world-novelty, simply because i can play WoW in my sleep (6 x 85s, at least 3 in ilvl 350 gear) now. Here are some of the high points for me:
- I liked the souls-mechanic, allowing for more individual variety amongst characters and (IMO) it'll be a long time before someone works out the cookiecutter "best spec" for tanking, dps, ranged, healing, etc. I *really* liked the flexibility in play
- I *like* the fact that it's not perfectly polished, everywhere.
- I like that crafting looks fairly slow to level (only did butcher/forager/alchemy, but friends did mining/bs)
- I like the long travel times, sure it's inconvenient but the world NEEDS travel-times to make it feel large and real. I hope to god they never implement flying mounts, or make it dangerous, and difficult to use. IMO Flying mounts were one of the big downfalls to the feel of endgame WoW becoming Progressquest.
- I very much like the Rifts mechanics, I like worlds that 'happen' without players having to trigger stuff, I like unscripted stuff. I'm hoping the consequences for leaving Rifts unattended is worse outside of the starter zones, at least as long as populations remain high.
- I know it's a WoW clone in many ways, I have no problem with that. Blizz has established some UI and interaction behaviors that work well. Uninterested in learning new ways to do things that are different "just to be not-WoW". In fact, i can't think of something i saw in any MMO that I liked, that I haven't seen implemented in Rift.
- I'm looking forward to UI mods, as the default UI needs some work. It's new.
In short, I'm *enjoying* my time playing, which I am not sure I've done consistently in WoW for a year or more. That's enough for me. Nothing against WoW, but probably for the next month my WoW guilds are probably going to wonder where I am.
