Ok anyways I cancelled my WoW account last week and although the voices in my head are screaming "Don't do it!" I am running to the local Game Stop as soon as they open and pre-ordering RIFT anyways. I have no game to play and it is driving me crazy! After playing in all the BETA events and seeing how each one was better and more polished than the one before I am sold. Not to mention reading what they have added to the game since the last BETA event.

    http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?86184-Beta-to-Head-Start-Patch-Notes-2-24-11

And who knows what they might add later. Trion's programmers are coding gods and thier dynamic system of adding to this game in a moments notice is unsurpassed in today's games. I would like to see more social elements to the game though. But hey, what else is out there that's fast paced and worth playing?

    Catch you all laterz!

Happy gaming , no matter what game you decide to play!

    ~cheers~

Trion has a great game on their hands. I love it and will be in Rift a long time. However, don't think of Rift as some kind of WOW killer, not going to happen. The only one that can take WOW down is Blizzard itself. WOW is a great game I spent 6 years and had great fun, wonderful memories, and got my money worth. Why do so many want to see WOW die. If WOW did not have it's success Rift would not exist.

While I agree that Rift isn't a WoW killer, you're last sentence is laughable. Blizzard did not invent the MMO genre. There were many succesful MMO's before WoW, and if  WoW had not been developed, I'm fairly sure there would have been plenty of other MMO's made that would have been succesful.

Let's be realistic. If WoW didn't exist, EQ2 would probably have bigger numbers, SWG wouldn't have screwed the pooch with the NGE, and maybe WAR and AoC would have been better recieved. If anything, WoW has hindered the MMO genre more than it's helped it.

Sorry for getting off topic but that statement stunned me with it's narrow minded stupidity.

Im playing both WoW and Rift, it feels bit refreshing while playing Rift but im not sure for how long i will play as i am very end game oriented, regular raid etc etc, i saw this video about Rifts Greenscale 20 man raid, everything looks great except the Idea of Random generated Mazes, and then placing mobs and bosses there. I might get tired of running through mazes, would love to see more info about the other raid hammerknell.

Keep in mind, the same was said about WAR and Aion even weeks after release, until the glamour of a new toy wore off - and they realized that it's not really that fun doing the same thing they did for X years before in WoW.

Actually...I don't remember it that way.

The % of positive feedbeack on Rift is out pacing both of those games a lot. The few complaints I've read have been very weak indeed.

The same wasn't said about WAR and Aion. I haven't seen such a buzz since WoW  and to a lesser extent...GW 1 launched.

Yep, because in fact, regarding WAR the hype was even more intense first weeks after release. Shortly followed the opposite reactions from the same people, that reached certain stage. Why don't you search throught the thread history on this site to see it by yourself. Better than a thousand words.

I had a blast yesterday and only had to wait tops of 30 minutes to get into a server.  Once i got in yesterday afternoon, I created a Guardian Mage and got all the way to level 11.  Had to log for dinner.

Came back, server had an hour queue so I rolled to a server that had just opened up and created a Defiant Warrior.  Had a blast for the rest of the night, got to about level 13, rift events and invasions were EVERYWHERE it was the most epic first 10 levels in any game I have ever seen.

Now today, I am torn as to which character to play.  I'll probably try the mage again just because queue times will suck later on for that server.  But otherwise, for a headstart, it was a very good launch.

Difference: The hype for RIFT has been generated by a really great BETA testing phases. Kudos to Trion. The Hype has been generated by players who have actually played the game and for the most part has been really well founded. And the after release hype will be phenomenal. Other games's hype has been pretty much from nothing but expations before release. There is no doubt, at least not here, that RIFT will become the next WoW or at least 2nd......Wait and see.

WAR also had open beta, and the hype was mostly generated by the same way as Rift now. WAR probably started with even more servers, as the popularity after open beta was extreme. Hence, the probablity that the same will happen to Rift is very high.

I was in WAR's open beta and was a rabid fanboi.  The difference between WAR's beta and RIFT's are profound: WAR's popularity was soaring before beta even began.  Beta only gave us a small taste of what the game was going to be, we didn't know the game was totally under-developed at endgame and that they wouldn't fix the stability problems at launch.  I just knew that Mythic was keeping the lid on some amazing things that would be revealed when the game launched.  But: It fizzled.  There was nothing else.  I couldn't believe that was 'it'.

RIFT's popularity blossomed throughout beta by people actually playing the game, not because of the company generated hype machine. The more people played the game, the more they talked about it and started praising it. I didn't give RIFT a fair chance until open beta - only because so many people were still talking about the game.  I got hooked in open beta - I got it.

While it is true, both games share a similar server queue scenario, how they got there are two very different stories.

Qazz - Wiser words than used in the previous post by the OP. Time will tell I guess, sure it might retain its popularity peaking 300-400k (which indeed would be a huge success), but so far it seems perfectly following the AoC-War-Aion story which occurs every year or so.

The fact that the game isn't a buggy unfinished mess makes this chapter a whole different story.

No lifed it for 11 hours straight to get to 20 and I had ZERO issues other than then shutting down the servers for 15 mins. I did not have to wait in a queue to get back in; there were no bugs that I saw and there were more rifts than ever. I can honestly say that this is the best launch i've taken part in.

I played WAR Beta and immediatly lost intrest as soon as I saw the ridiculous stick figure looking characters and jerky gameplay. Actually bought the damn game when I knew better. Didn't even finish my free month. I couldn't stand the way the game felt. People compare RIFT to WAR. Only thing I see here is a similarity to PQ's, only much improver over WAR. Other than that,  (Having played every beta event after 2)   I get an entirely different feel from the game. And it is an awesome feeling I havent felt since WoW was released after I beta tested that game as well.

Well it's the same engine from the start, pretty much same models, animations, very similar movement feeling, almost identical UI. Truth is I didn't play past level 12 in beta, so it's just a first half a day impression.

I had an absolutely awesome time. Played from 6-2am. I didn't realize the game had a knockback mechanic that sent us all flying periodically but it was all good. Frankly I was surprised that i liked it as much as I did. I'm not a fan of fantasy (anymore).

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

    Very smooth early-start launch.

Actually, shockingly smooth. Still cant believe it was so smooth. They have done an amazing, perhaps unprecedented job if you factor in the lack of the hype.

As some chap mentioned, not sure how those rifts will play out when most players have moved on end-game. Hope they have some dynamic to reward/allow higher levels to help lower levels or lower level zones may get over-run. Maybe this dynamic already exists? But I only played to lv10 in beta and now as early-start.

game ran smooth there are long quese times thats to be expected.

But people are bitching, these same people would bitch if they reduced the que time by increasing server load becuase theres lag.

Or increased the numbers of servers and then they would complain there world is empty in 2 weeks wehn the population stabilizes.

But so far no lag, no desynch no rubber banding, minimal broken quests. and I am running maxed graphics.

I was part of the launch from those 3 games (AoC, WAR, Aion).

Aion is a special case because it was a delayed release and NCSoft had plenty of time to iron out bugs. Though it was built for a pay-as-you-go market where shallow games are flourishing, and NCSoft thought they could release it in a Monthly sub market where games have to offer a giant list of things to do.......

When I look into Rift, I know Trion Worlds won't have to spend too much resource working on missing key features or critical bugs, and is likely to work on additional content...

    Sorry, have to disagree.

AoC was released missing many promised features, even features advertised on the back of the box, took such a high end computer to play that tons of people couldn't enjoy it even on low settings, WaR was an overhyped hollow shell of a game that was also missing promised features, Aion, I didn't play, but my friends who did complained bitterly that about half way to level cap, they just ran out of quests and had to go grind mobs all day long. You left out LOTRO, ran great, was pretty much as advertised, oops, the IP is controled by some seriously straight laced people who do not want the Tolkein universe messed with in any way, so for many MMO fans the one faction, monster play only PVP didn't slice no ice.

So far Rift seems to have none of the problems that helped devistate three games and kept one a niche game mainly for fans of the IP only. Trion actually seems to listen and respond to rational criticism, and so far they seem to have vastly understated how well their game is going to perform in the MMO market. From what I'm seeing this game looks like it may just be on the road to a long and healthy life.
