i can't believe nobody in this forum ever mentions PHANTASY STAR ONLINE.
Whats wrong with people not playing classic games like PSO instead of some of the new GARBAGE MMOs coming out lately.
this is why MMOs are dying cuz people don't play the classic games and play the new kind of garbage games coming out lately.
Most here dont seem to understand what an rpg is or action/story games.
Legend of zelda sinds when is that an rpg?
But PhantasyStarOline was a great game ive played it on my Sega Dreamcast online for almost year but if i sum up some good RPG'S i dont mention action hack and slash online games like PSO all tho was great game.
My favorite isElder scroll III: Morrowind, Vampire:The Masquerade-Bloodlines, Two worlds, Bladurs Gate 2, Risen, Divinity 1 and 2 and Skies Of Arcadia-Sega Dreamcast.
Alot more to lazy to look it up just some few who popt up in my mind hehe.
@Asmosdeus most games you mentioned are not RPGs i dont mean there not fun or nor good there just not rpgs.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

just to answer your question its always been an action/rpg . theres always been different rpg types
look it up evry game i listed IS an rpg or a */rpg
Evasia id be curious as to which games u think ive listed are not rpgs lol ?
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
I'm an old fart gamer. So I will list the best game I played through by a list of systems I grew up with.
Atari VCS - Adventure
I loved Adventure. Played it myself on a DEC PDP-10 (not mine of course), my first ever computer game.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Final Fantasy 7 was an amazing game for the time. I won't dispute that at all. It had an incredible depth and complexity to it for what it presented, and quite simply demanded that more people run out and purchase a Sony Playstation to play it over any other game, I think.
It was THE reason to go get a system. I know - I was one of the folks that ran out to get a PS One and that game to take home.
I can't honestly list it as being one of my all time favorites though for three reasons.
1) I hated angsty boy Cloud Strife. I simply couldn't identify with him. I honestly tried. He worked for some people that played the game, but I wasn't one of them.
2) I disliked the crazy amount of Elipses in text dialogues. C'mon.... I mean really.
3) It was completely, COMPLETELY obvious that a certain character that died during the game was INTENDED, ALL ALONG to be returned to the party in some fashion before the game's end. THE FREAKIN' STONE PLATFORM for them to STAND ON at the game's LAST FIGHT was right there. Empty.
The game's lead designer had a real life tragedy and decided it just HAD to filter into the game's plot as an after thought to add some personal significance to it. Some people were cool with that. Some felt cheated. I'm one of the ones who fell into the 2nd camp.
All of the Final Fantasy games except the latest. King's Quest series and pretty much all of the Sierra games. I used to love Sierra games! Quest for Glory series, Pirates! by Sid Meiers even if I did have to play a guy pirate instead of a lady pirate.
Ihave played too many RPGs to list and I just don't really pick favourites as its alien to my mentality.
But I will say that Planescape: Torment has the most impressive story and writing of almost any game I have seen. You could just read the dialog as a book and its as good as many quality fantasy novel. Add in the vast panoply of choices and how the premises of the character actually makes it fit and its just plain impressive. The Githzerai stuff alone is just plain awesome.
Oh yeah I would like to give an honorable mention to Arcanum.
Not the best RPG around but a very good one with a novel dichotomy of magic vs technology and steam-punk setting giving it ALOT of ways to play the game out in novel ways.
Both Torika games got smashed and didn't sell well but I always though Arcanum and Bloodlines were really good RPGs with cool atmosphere.
One great thing about these games is in Arcanum if you had a low intellgience ALL dialog changed to different style of dumed done talking and in Bloodlines Malkavian's had completely different dialog that both freaky and really funny.
The entire Final Fantasy series would be my all time favorites.
Next would be the Golden Sun series on Gameboy Advance, now that was an epic 2 games
After that I would have to say Arc: Twilight of the Spirits, this game had a bit of everything story wise, like reading a great book you just couldnt stop XD
I have played Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Both Neverwinter Nights, Mostly stuck with PC games, I did play Final Fantasy 3 tho and really liked that.
Comments
From memory, some of my most favorite remembered games played.
- Baldurs Gate
- Icewind Dale
- Neverwinter Nights
- The Elder Scrolls
- Dungeon Siege
- Darkstone
- Gothic
- The Longest Journey
- Siberia
- Nocturne
- Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption
- Dragon Age
I'll just put in my top 3 here:
Morrowind
Diablo 1, 2
Fallout 2
O_o o_O
I recently bought Divinity 2 (DKS) and that has turned out to be a lot of fun, perhaps enough to go down as one of my favorites.
Perhaps not quite an rpg, but Stalker SoC is also a fantastic game. i put it up there with Morrowind/Fallout 3 due to it's non-linearity.
Final Fantasy
- Baldur's Gate 2
- Arcanum of Steamwork and Magick Obscura
- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
- Mass Effect series
- Dragon Age Origins
- Morrowind
- Oblivion
- The Witcher
- Knights of the Old Republic 1
I've played a lot. Knights of the Old Republic is my favorite. The first Icewind Dale was pretty good, too.
