It all depends on what youll be doing and what you want to play. Remember, Rift soul system was intended so that there isnt any cookie-cutter max dps class/spec.
Theres a different spec/soul set up for solo dps, aoe dps, dps/support, full support, so you will just need to test out things yourself when you get all the souls.

This is great. I am really looking forward to the complexity of the system. I'm hoping it will keep it's complexity. I will be solo dps for sure, but I don't even know how to start.

It may be different now but when i was in beta, pyromancer builds were being used for dps. I forget what they were coupled with though

Yeah, I was looking at the pyromancer. I was hoping the build would be a good solo character for a mage. However, I was also wondering if the build would be too simple? I have no idea..

I am sorry to bust your bubble, but there is nothing complex about the soul system. Its alot like WoW talent builds pre-cataclysm except pretty much every class gets a pet if ya want. Now as the game progresses I am sure it will have plenty to do etc.I think the last complex game I played was Star Wars Galaxies pre-cu and Eve online. Enjoy the game tho.

The highest damage specs for single target are melee rogues. Ranged rogues used to be up there too, but they got nerfed late in alpha and we really didn't get a good grasp of how they compare now at high levels.
Mages DPS is pretty lackluster outside of AoE. Mages most benefitial souls are actually Chloromancer, Dominator, & Archon. None of which do good damage.
If you really want to be a DPS powerhouse as the game stands now, you'll roll a rogue. But don't be surprised if Mages get some buffs in the future, because they honestly need them.
I think if you read the soul descriptions available to both the Rogue and Mage, you'll be able to narrow down quite a bit what you prefer. As yourself these questions for starters:
1. Would I prefer to look at leather armor or a robe for several months?
2. If Rogue, would I rather use a bow/gun or melee weapons?
3. If Mage, would I rather my dmg be DoT or DD?
There are several ways to go, and different affects to see based on your choices. For instance, you may prefer dealing lightning and wind damage over fire damage, or you may prefer to strike from stealth rather than fight foot to foot with twin blades.
Make no mistake though, those who say the soul system is designed for there not to be any main dps spec is partially incorrect. While you can choose how you want to deal your dps, if you don't focus on a tree or spread your points too thin, you'll be far less effective than someone who does focus or spends their points wisely. I found this out today when I respecced my points to focus in one tree with a smattering in another, instead of having them spread out amognst 3 trees. Now I kill much faster.
Originally posted by Zorlok I'll be rolling a Rogue or a Mage when I am finished DLing. Can someone tell me what direction I should take either of these to maxamize DPS? I'm just curious. Thanks
I'd highly recommend pairing a dps soul with a support/healing soul. The synergy with souls is interesting and takes some guess work to figure out but most dps souls benefit from having a support/defensive/healing soul attached to it as secondary or primary soul.
For mage I'd recommend Warlock/Chloromancer/Necromancer all in that order. You dot, dot, send in pet (acts like dot and health buffer but not a real tanking pet), heal pet+yourself (via Chlormancer damage/heal mechanic you get at level 10 sp investment in the Chloro tree I believe), cast Chloro bolt...rinse and repeat.
For Rift public quest a Chlormancer is just a BOSS of a character. Oh and did I mention that you will always be a top contributor in Rift public quests with a Cholormancer? Can you say Cha-Ching !
For rogue I'd suggest Bard+Ranger+whatever floats your boat. Your main points should be invested in the Bard soul with the Ranger being a secondary tree you invest in for your character. Again the Bard soul will have you on top of the contribution list for Rifts and thus net you a lot of Rift currency.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
I running ranger/bard (dps/support) and loving it. Just finished 2 runs in DSM and both times the cleric went OOM on the final boss and I was able to quit DPSing and start healing, it was a lot of fun.
I decided to roll a rogue. I like it a lot so far. Pretty linear but I like the fast DPS right now. I will try to roll a mage and see if I like spells better. Who knows...
