Pre-order, or wait for a review?

HardangerHardanger Member Posts: 226

I'm currently so bored with all the MMOs I've tried that I'm subscribed to nothing, and just dicking around on Minecraft.  I have heard very good things about Rift.  Not the least of which have been on this forum.  However, there is also a fair share of hate.  Basically, I'm being somewhat tempted to pre-order.  To help me to decide whether to wait a couple weeks for reviews, or just take the plunge - I have a request to make of any of you who have been head-starting.  Please post a little brief summary of your experiences in the game.  Please try to stick to facts, and prevent a shit storm of arguments.

Thanks.

Heh, I have no expereince with the game but am dowloading it right now.  I decided to take the plunge becuase of what I have been reading, Youtube, and other peoples comments.  I would say if you are bored with other MMO's, but still like the genre, give it a shot.  In my opinion its going to be a good game for a while, and that's just from what I have been reading...

now i know im not in Hs but i did try out the beta phases.  i didnt see anything great about the game (there nothing really bad about it either). it has nice graphic and is kinda polished BUT there nothing new or groundbreaking about the game.

it was kinda fun while i could play it free   but i wouldnt pay for it as it just felt like more of what ive seem in the standard mmorpg out there. the skill system is kinda intrerresting i must admit but again it will  become like most multiclass systems where the min /max-ers

will eventually lead to optimal builds etc etc ....

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I've played pretty much every themepark MMO out there, and nothing really compares to what I've experienced in Rift in the past few days. The game is crazy good, seriously.

I want to share what happened today, but first look at this map:- (Bigger picture here.)

Every one of those purple swirly things is a Rift. These are public events that everyone joins in on and completes. They spawn the crossed swords, too.

Every one of the square things is a Foothold. This is where the Rift creatures have placed down (or conquered) footholds on wards etc. I'm not sure if they spawn the crossed swords, but I'm fairly certain they are.

Every one of the crossed swords is between 2 and 6 hard (sometimes elite, sometimes just difficult) mobs that run towards the nearest wardstone to capture it. These create footholds which spawn more of these.

This was the beginning of the "big" (there are smaller ones that come along more regularly and are easier to defeat) death invasion. By about halfway through the invasion, my map was literally covered in a sea of purple swords. People were holding off the sheer masses of undead converging on one of the objectives (the other was taken out fairly early on due to a lack of defence) whilst others did Rifts and killed super elites that were running around in order to power some giant cannon thing.

After a LONG time, we completed it. It was hard, it was fun and it actually kinda builds a sense of community and pride in your fellow players.

It was absolutely amazing, hectic and crazy. It's an example of what makes Rift the best themepark MMO to date, too.

If we'd've lost, I think we'd've had about thirty minutes of undead running rampant through the zone, slaughtering quest givers and basically fucking up playing for a bit. :p

    This game is brilliant.

EDIT: By the by, Rift does amazing dynamic landscape change. When the event started the zone went seriously dark, I could barely see beyond about 100 meters around me. I could still see the rifts tearing open in the sky in the distance, though. It was AMAZING. I wish I could've got more pictures.

One of my experiences in game. :p

I'll be honest with you: The invasions make the game for me. It's been a long time since I've had a game that can capture my attention like this with a single mechanic. I would NOT be playing this game (not even for the rifts etc) if it didn't have invasions.

There's a hell of a lot of content in a single zone. I mean it's seriously jampacked full of content. You've got a dungeon per zone (AFAIK), a lot of quests, a new warfront every 10 levels, a whole new bunch of rifts with their own mechanics etc etc.

Just slog through the first fifteen levels (the most boring part of the game), and you're in for fun.

That's my experience of it, anyhow.

EDIT: I've had three or four other invasions happen like this, too. They were minor ones, but still quite capable of slaughtering all the players in the zone if we weren't prepared and conquering the villages. Like a minor water invasion that ended up WINNING and spawning a hell of a lot of footholds.

    Reason not to buy .

1 you are fantasy overburned ...

2 you are quest train overburned , can happen cause of cataclysme who was one big quest train .

3 isn´t technical with computer system , the daily updates is a major headache on vista >.<

4 Cash strapped and waiting for another MMO like swtor or anything else that rocks people boat

    Reason to buy

1 If you are bored want a polished mmo launch for start

2 you got money to spare and simply put a blank mind (since not everything is a themepark ride) a lot of things if you haven´t play beta are a bit confusing so after sanctum you got so many trails to follow or options to do (so around level 15-20)

3 Its a wow clone in ease of style

4 Want something new without sacrificing the knowledge of something old (this game is really userfriendly)

Thats basically it maybe i don´t sound so enthousiasthic , but the game is good its what i expect from a excisting mmo .

Not something i expect from headstart or polished launch in a long .

If you have played the beta and like it , then you won´t mind playing it , since world is a bit crowded .

If hate beta the game isn´t going to change your opnion .

If you like LOTRO and EQ and other games like that , didn´t go trough cata quest train wreck , you will love this game .

Well, there are both some good and some bad things about Rift: The good thing is that the game actually is stable, well coded and not buggy. It also have excellent character customization.

The bad stuff is that the game offers very little new and that the quests are very linear and often poorly written.

I can't recommend you to buy any MMO without trying it first, it just leads to a lot frustration. Isn't the open beta running still?

Try the game, if there isn't an open beta anymore, wait until you get a free trial.

Rift is not a bad game, but it isn't as good as many people here say. It is the best MMO release for years but that tells you very little. Some love the game while other hate it so we really can't guess how it will be for you.

Anyone who pre-ordered FFXIV will tell you:

Wait for the release. All releases have some trouble they run into. The biggest of these are usually cleared up in the first week, and the ones that aren't going to be cleared up are going to be well-journalized by the review community.

While I think the beta for RIFT was revealing enough for everyone to see what it was going to be about, and how it is going to be on release, I think as a general rule it's best to wait.

You can never tell if the servers will get absolutely flooded and the game basically unplayable, or some other technical glitch that basically makes even the most polished of beta runs go into a nightmare release. Give it a week or so, see how it lays, then pluck down the hard earned cash. You'll still have the privilege of saying "I was there at launch" in 5 years for bragging rights, but you won't have to put up with the stink if the game somehow turns out like FFXIV, or Vanguard, did.

Heck if WAR or AoC are any indications, even a couple of weeks won't guarantee anything though. It will be too early to tell if the game is a smash or failure even a couple of months into it. But if you have fun playing, that's all the really counts.

I don't think you need to wait for a review.

Just read this forum. Everything you need to know has already been said. All you have to do is apply it to your tastes and preferences.

The review is here in this forum. And in the articles that have been written by this forum's writers.

    It's all there.

Yeah, I suppose that's true enough.  Still, I hope people will continue to reply to this thread.  That'll make it easier for me.

    But it's already been written.

All you have to do is pick a thread and go through it. All the pros/cons/people's opinons from all sides.

If you don't want to do that then I would say wait for a review, do not pre-order.

I suppose you've been reading a lot about the game and know what you like and dislike in a game.. Maybe you even been in the beta.. So, personnally, if you're still not sure if the game is for you, I think you should stick with your idea and wait for a review..

imageimageWell here is a good screenshot of a char I took today. I think personally the graphics are amazing, but you really need to see it in action for yourself. I love the lighting in this game, and if you were present you could have seen what I was seeing with how beautiful this graphical model really was when I took this pic. The game is just fun. I can not explain it any other way. It is the same quest grind, and yes the rifts can seem like, "Oh look another Rift". But when you get to the rift it is nothing but fun to me. No matter how many times I do it. It takes personal experince to see if you like it though. You might love it or hate it, it's all up to you my friend.

**Edit forgot to add the screens
