I went to the Rift site to look at the classes.  4 classes and 32 callings???  WTF

My God, do I have to try each one to see which one I want to play?  This is insane.

I think this game has a few more than wow, you think?

Looks like fun...LOL.  I guess it will only take me a month or more to figure out which one I like.

I'm game, are you?

I have been playing mmorpg's for a very long time, but never saw so many types before.  Are there any other games out there that has half of those or close to those?

    I dont think so

    You get 4 classes.

Each class gets 9 callings. Each class has access to all 9 callings.

That basically means that with 4 characters covering the 4 classes, you cover all callings available. Whithin a class you can swap any calling and put any amount of talent points into them as you see fit.

Check this builder for more details:

I might be wrong, but didn't EQ2 have a ton of classes and different specs kind of for em all...I didn't play it much so I'm not sure, but I think it had a lot.

Reguardless, this game looks great, I played the betas, but I overplayed them and am still debating on getting the game...

Just a note on the system, since it's unique and new to people coming in:

Through the starting area, you will get quests to gain three starting souls. You can put skill points into them as you see fit, but you can't have more points in any one soul than your current level. The trees are tiered, but you only need 5 points in a tier to go up to the next level, so there is plenty of room to customize each soul. The order you take the souls during the start means nothing, so don't worry if you decide you like your second or third soul more.

When you hit level 13, you can go to your faction Capitol. There will be a representative for each soul there. The reps for the souls in your calling who's souls you don't have will have quests available to earn that soul. You can only do one quest at a time, so you can't just load up all 5 at once. The quests require you to participate in a Rift out on the world map. At the completion of the rift, you get a quest item that you can then activate to summon a corrupted avatar of that soul to fight. Most people summon them right after the rift finishes, since most people still there will help to kill them for you. Kill the corrupted soul, then turn in the quest and you now have that soul.

On the soul tree screen, you can click on the emblem for each soul and if you have additional souls, it will allow you to pick one to replace the other soul on the tree. Make sure to visit your trainer to train up any new skills. Once you pay for the skill ups, they will stick, even if you swap souls in and out.

You call also buy additional roles, which allows you quick access to more than one soul/skill tree builds. The first one is fairly cheap, but they get a lot more expensive, so you won't be opening up three or four early on.

You have to pay to reset points in a role, but it's fairly cheap. If your third soul is at zero points and used for the initial skills the soul offers, you can swap between zero point souls with out a reset.

You can switch between roles any where out in the world, but you can't swap while in combat.

Great for having different roles for different situations. Also nice for people new to the game as a way to experiment. Keep your proven build in one role and experiment with the second. If the experiment fails, at least you have a fallback until you can reset the failed role.

In all honesty, stay away from this game.  But opinions are opinions. They say this game is original in its own ideas, but like every other game on the market now, most of them are just bits and peices of all other games out there now-aday.

all derp'd out and nowhere to herpaderp.

imo, its more like the game more or less has only 4 classes. from there you can decide how you want to play your class. in the warrior specialty you can decide if you want to be more of a tanker, 2 hand dpser, 1 hand dpser, anti-mage, mage-like warrior, etc. but at the end of the day you are still a warrior, which is still completely different from a mage or a cleric. you wear a lot of armor so you dont die as fast, carry around heavy weapons, and your not as quick and stealthy as rogue but you hit really hard. for me it really adds individuality and personality to your character because you really choose what you want to become.

plus at the beginning they give you suggestions as to what callings go well together, so thats a big help. also, re-speccing is really cheap so you are free to experiment.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

44, not including Maulers, which can be played by any of the 3 factions, so actually 45.

    EQ2 has 24 i think, 4 basic archetypes, 3 classes, 2 per class.

    Never played EQ.

I forget how many "classes" the original SWG had, but it was a lot:

Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Medic, Doctor, Musician, Dancer, Image Designer, Swordsman, TK, Bio Engineer, various crafting professions: Architect, Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Tailor etc (in SWG if you were a crafter, you were a crafter first and foremost, it wasn't a secondary skill), Rifleman, Pistoller, Carbineer, Commando, Creature Handler, Brawler, Politician, Combat Medic, Chef, Pikeman, Merchant, Ranger, Fencer, Scout, Droid Engineer, Shipwright (JTL) Jedi (eventually)...thats 31 i can think of off the top iof my head, there were more.

However, sandbox game have more options and combinations anyway.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

Hyperbole alert.  Others have already pointed out some obvious examples, but even the much abhorred WoW (as far as this site's community goes) has 10 classes x 3 very distinct specs per class = 30 options.  Regardless of what criticisms people may have for WoW, it's difficult to argue that each of WoW's class specs do not play very uniquely and distinctly from each other.

I don't think the difference to WoW is that huge. WoW got 10 classes with 3 talent trees each => 30 talent trees in total. Rift got 4 classes with 8 talent trees => 32 talent trees in total. It's about the same. Except that WoW got a higher replay value, because you have more classes to try out (since in Rift you simply swap the souls).

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

you must have not watched the dev video where they flat out said they took what they thought was the best of several mmo's.

they never claim to be cutting edge new or earth-shattering inovation.

the game runs very good. polished like a true AAA.......as opposed to AoC which is 3 years in and still crashes EVERY RAID i ever went into.

Thanks, was looking for a nice detailed explanation of how it works.
