I think many people on both sides are confused about what bugs show up because of the game engine and what bugs show up because of the poor implimentation of it. Most bugs are caused by the latter.
It is unfortunate that on some servers the queue lines can become quite large, however this is to be expected. A major up-coming AAA MMO title that has had an open Beta for the past few weeks is going to have quite a massive population for the first month or so. It can be extremely frustrating however there are only so many different things Trion can do to help this problem without seriously placing the future of the game in jeopardy.
Trion WANTS the srevers to have queues. It's a hype machine. People may bitch that can't play but all it really does is make them want to play even more, rather they want to admit it or not. Think back! Look what the same exact thing did for Warcraft.
Not since the release of WoW have I seen this phenomena occur. Sure it's present at other MMO game launches but not like this. This just feels different. I for one am kinda excited.
Blizzard(Activision) ((not sure if even Blizzard exists anymore)) just might have something here to worry about and that is indeed a GOOD thing to behold!
Curious how these threads about Rift have exactly the same kinds of discussion as WAR had in their (un)official forums.
The problem is that there seem to be a big number of servers opened to counter the flood.
The same 1500 people per server limits were exactly the same for WAR.
WAR had to open 113 servers to accomodate the (later confirmed) 800K players. A mere 7K subscriptions per server...
Rift is already through half that number with queues still in.
Both games use the same engine. No coincidence.
The problem with such low pops per server is that at launch they fill up incredibly fast but ... the moment these pops drop they drop all over the total number of servers. hence going very quickly from low to full and vice versa.
In fact this low number of people per server count contributed to the fast regression of WAR after 1-2 months.
WAR made another error: dividing these pops even further with 4 different Tiers and having no cross server BG's. Rift makers didn't fall into this trap, hence a small world and cross server BG's to counter the handicap.
We'll watch these servers in the following 6 - 8 weeks and everyone will conclude: but my guess is it certainly is the end of single server based realms.
If your guess is correct, then we'll have seen the death of yet another feature that made the early MMORPG's great virtual worlds and put another nail in the coffin of converting them into mere "games"

You my friend are delusional. Its right there in black and white, yet now you are saying that dev team doesn't pay attention to what is posted on their own website? About their own game? No wait its all a cover up because they want 'pad' their numbers.
Here it is again....
I keep seeing references to a dev saying that each sever would only hold 1500 people. The actual quote was from a very old IRC chat where one of our devs was talking about numbers for that current beta as the servers were opened.
I like the how you in one sentance you don't believe anyones numbers, then in the next one you say I "100% believe the Lead Dev of Rift" Like I said delusional. 1500 cap is false. Its officially been announced on the forums. Not sure what else you need a phone call from the lead dev?
Just log on to Laethys shard and there wasn't any que. Started the game Thursday on wolf(something) got to level 5 tried to get back on later that night was a 8 hour long que so my brother and I switched shards. Was a smart decision. Havnt seen a que yet for Laethys.
Keep in mind, 9 Eastern is only 8 Central only 7 Mountain and only 6 Pacific. It will be another couple of hours before actual "prime time" hits for the West Coast (as it comes to a close for the East Coast).
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
I don't really mind queus to tell the truth. I look at it as a good sign that people are playing on my server! However, an 8 hour wait is a little much. I don't mind waiting an hour, but I just go to something imprtant, like... make my bed? Do laundry? Study? umm... Talk with my girlfriend... Heh..
Sorry for posting another thread so quick, but I am curious on the queues. Is there a long wait to get to play?
People complaining about queues are those that CHOSE to go on those servers despite knowing there would be queues, and are now complaining about them. There are pleanty of servers with high population that almost never go into queue, and there are about 3 that are medium population. I'm on a server that has a 400+ queue nightly (seastone) and I haven't complained once.
This is false. This is incredibly false. There are people that are already on their third server, having rerolled again and again. There is definitely a queue issue.
People chose to roll on servers when the head start began. BAM - they became FULL. Trion added new servers. People that did not want to deal with the FULL servers moved. And then - BAM - they became FULL.
So now, during primetime, there are perhaps 4 NA servers that are not FULL. They are at MEDIUM or HIGH.
The regular launch takes place tomorrow. What is going to happen to those 4 servers? Yeah, they are going to go FULL pretty fast.
The queues during primetime run anywhere from 1 to 5 hours or longer. That is for anywhere from 200-400 or more. Some queues are up to a thousand.
Trion has attempted to address issues that were causing the high queue times (people could sit on the character select screen without being disconnected or they could autorun and not be disconnected). These allowed people to go to school, work, sleep, etc, etc, etc without having to wait in the queue again. Those have been addressed, however you are still facing that 1-5 hour queue (though it was often 8-10 or more before).
The game's popularity has surpassed what Trion expected. Heck, the game is already becoming plagued by Plat Sellers.
Add in the crashes and server restarts during the head start (cannot fault them here, would rather they did it during the head start than during the 30 days) - and you may find yourself sitting in queues more than you play.
If the game was not as fun as it is, I would have walked away not long after the head start began. But the game is fun, so I am on my third server... just do not know if I have a fourth or even a fifth in me.
I rolled 3 alts on one medium population server on day 1, a couple of hours after go-live. I haven't queued one single second.
Keep in mind, 9 Eastern is only 8 Central only 7 Mountain and only 6 Pacific. It will be another couple of hours before actual "prime time" hits for the West Coast (as it comes to a close for the East Coast).

Welp, I recant my previous post. Got into my first queue on my server just right now. 40 people long, so not bad, only a few minute wait. Honestly I do not mind, I just hope they don't open up too many servers and end up like WAR, merging all of them later.

Lol, they just said that the servers are coming down in 10 for 45 minutes.
I agree wholeheartedly that they do not need to open too many more servers. The servers really are not overcrowded... I can see them wanting to throttle folks in the starting areas, etc (it is very linear) - so adding too many would just create problems down the road.
Lots of people will pick up a MMO for the 30 days and then walk away - face it, even at that it is cheaper and they get more than they would with most single player games.
Trion has done a great job - working on what is wrong to get it fixed, dealing with the playerbase, etc. It is still mind boggling how quickly they address actual issues... seriously trippy.

I am not trolling. I am just trying to make my decision on whether to buy the game or not. I dont feel like sitting for hours waiting to play. I can only play a few hours a night from 6:30 PM to around 9 PM EST. I dont get home from work till around 530 pm EST.
I may wait to buy the game when the hype dies down.
I have been playing the Head Start from the first day. The only time I have seen a queue was on the very first day when everyone was trying to create their first characters and grab their cool names. After the first day, I log in and just start playing. I have been playing every evening (in prime time) and all weekend.
Today (Tuesday) we will probably have a bunch of queues because of the release. More new people signing in and making their first characters and QQing because their cool names were all grabbed by the Head Start people.

Care to share what server you play on? Care to share what your "primetime" is?

Sure. I play on the Shadefallen RP server. During the weekdays I start playing between 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM central time and played for 3-4 hours. So I was logging in several time a night during the 5PM to 10PM Central time range. I log in and out as RL issues cause me to be AFK for extended periods. During this weekend I played much longer. I started around Noon and played till midnight. Logging in and out various times of the day for more RL issues.

The next month is gonna be interesting.......
Well there is an obvious difference between concurrent and capacity. There are 24 hours in a day
so the population is spread out.
The key question is at prime time what can a particular server hold. My total guess is maybe
2-3k range. Unless someone is nice enough to go ACT the data for us on both side of a highly
populated server we will never know.
If your guess is correct, then we'll have seen the death of yet another feature that made the early MMORPG's great virtual worlds and put another nail in the coffin of converting them into mere "games"
