(just thinking while servers are down)
Besides the RIFTS (which remind me of Tabula Rasa game play), I really don't see anything innovating.
I love the choice in 28 classes and the mixing, however the game reminds me of WoW in a lot of ways from crafting and game mechaincs. It seems once again the game is filled with Casters going for the ultimate alpha class.
I rolled a Justicar / Warden / Purifier (reminds me of my Warpriest from Warhammer) and absolutely enjoying it far better than my Reaver / Paladin / Warlord.
Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the game for now, but the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be the same ole, same ole. I feel like I jumped into a newer version of Vanilla WoW.
Get to level cap, grind dungeons / PvP BG's for gear and roll a alt thru the linear world once again. There are no Sieges or Castles to capture for your faction (which I miss from DAoC).
Maybe I am just a old fart when it comes to mmo gaming, but I do miss lots of the mechanics in older mmo's like Shadowbane, AO, DAoC, EQ and SWG (sandbox)..
Also, maybe I am just wishing too much for a revised DAoC instead of the same cookie cutter mmo's of what we got now.
Then again, I should just enjoy it for what it is and as long as I am having fun with my friends and guild members .

28 classes? Rift have 4 classes you can customize a lot. That is good, but if it is modern or not? No clue.
Rifts and invasions are modern. Scaling events is something that is "in" right now even though Bioware used it in Neverwinter nights a long time ago they never spread to MMOs until recently.
And the graphics is modern.
Besides that I dunno if you can call any of it modernized, it have very few differences with games coming before it.
It is a pretty good game, be happy with that instead.
I here ya on this! I miss DaOC but then again I don't think we will get it back. I was hoping WaR would have done that.. Nope..
But I am loving RIFT for some reason.. I do have to amdit it. I like it.
It really isn t anything new at all. It s a decent game, but I see it more of a game to play while you wait for other games on the horizon. That was my plan, but I just don t find it overly exciting, so after the free month I ll go back to good old DAOC, or EQ1, while I wait for those games.
For some reason RIFT reminds me somewhat of DAOC, which I found surprising and enjoyable.
So here is the thing with Rift (and yes I previously criticized the game but after playing it some more I am proud to announce I have changed my opinion) they didn't try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, they slapped some rubber tires on it and gave it some 20 inch rims and spinners.
So, no it's not new. It's not "special" but it is damned good.
Thanks Loke666, my bad on the classes, should have said callings, but I think you got my drift
If anything, Rift is a step backwards. The developers pared off a number of features that players have come to expect in modern MMOs, either believing that they were unnecessary or trying to slide by on the cheap. Not surprising, I suppose, since most of the development team who have experience have worked on games that are largely considered failures.
It boggles my mind at how enthusiastic people have become about a game that really offers less of an experience than what is currently available. I expect that many of them will wake to a "morning after" revelation within a couple of weeks of playing Rift.
I would be willing to cut Trion more slack if they weren't so busy hyping the hell out of this thing. I've yet to hear much about what they plan to do after launch. Given what I've seen, I can see the developers with their fingers in the wind, ready to make the same kneejerk reactions to forum rumblings that I saw during my time in the betas. They really don't seem to have a clear idea where they plan to take Rift.
"Soloists and those who prefer small groups should never have to feel like they''re the ones getting the proverbial table scraps, as it were." - Scott Hartsman, Senior Producer, Everquest II
"People love groups. Its a fallacy that people want to play solo all the time." - Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, Rift
Number of features missing, whatfeatures would that be?
As for Trion devs i don;t frequent the official forums much but they already posted about what content they are working on.
Nice analogy Wild...
Anyways, as one person stated, this game hasn't got anything new to offer, but its more polished than a mmo that was released in 2006 with a modernized graphic engine.
Me, I enjoy doing the Rifts, however Tabula Rasa was the 1st of this idea, its too bad TR flopped.. But Rift hoping isn't going to hold me into the game for months to come.
Just going to enjoy my fun while it lasts.
