I thought about maybe if I was developing a MMORPG when dragons are a playable race. But I think they will be overpowered or will have too much restrictions. What does everyone think of dragons being a playable race?

..that is not a new idea.
Horizons has dragons as playable races, maybe you can check it out?
Also Trials of Ascension, a niche Mmorpg that has been in development for lot of time, features dragons (even griffons) as playable races.

If your death penalty VARY a lot from race to race, then I see no reason from restraining from adding a dragon, althought the grind would prolly be beyond anything anyone ever experience.
Dragons should level at least 3 times slower then the best humanoid. The death penalty need to sting badly, be it an awfull XP lost, an amount of life per month, permadeath, whatever, it need to sting more then others races.
Same logic around for weakers races, they need to level up faster and have little death consequences compare to strongers races.
Finally, humans to be encouraged should have the best overall ratio and by far, never been the best in anything, but the xp progression and the death penalty should be an awesome ratio compare to others races.
PS: Althought some games have ''dragons'', they are pretty weak version of what dragons could be in the current games.
