OP population is not an issue rightnow.

I have to admit this game is a lot of fun, its not a dull stagnant world though like wow. You will every now and then need to help out in an invasion of an area. or none of your quests will be able to be gotten as mobs will have destroyed towns.

Thankfull invnasions are only triggered if there is a sufficient population in a zone to handle it.

If you choose a pve server you probably wont need a guild unless you want to do some of the bigger raids.

I cant stress I havent had this much fun in awhile. there is no technical issues for me at all, have had only one broken quest. I like the art direction and graphics some people dont that purely a subjective thing.

lots of whining about classes and combinations so far, but thats par for the course in any mmo.

If you like fantasy settings give it a shot.

If you're on the fence, for any reason, it'd be best to just give it some time and see how things pan out.  Initial sales are absolutely no indication of a game's longevity (I cite to you Warhammer: The Age of Reckoning as the primary example).

If after a few months the population is still rather high or at least they're not consolidating servers due to population, then I'd say it's probably going to stick around.  If it goes the way of WAR and it's just another "flash in the pan" then you'll be thanking yourself for not wasting the money.

Then again, I'm horribly jaded after pre-ordering both WAR and the collector's edition of FFXIV.

i'm having alot of fun in rift, but if you're worried about population i would wait till atleast the first month is up. thats usually when alot of mmos lose a good bit of subs and rifts in Rift depend on a very healthy population to be fun or even beatable. i play on a HIGH population server but if a rift spawns way late in the am there is usually never enough people on to clear it and invasions covers an entire zone. yeah i know not many people play at 5-7am on a weekday but could give an idea on how it would be on a low pop server to play on. i mean i do still see alot of people on but not everyone wants to close rifts or at the very least may not feel like it at those hours.

even prime time not every single person wants to close every rift and nor should they have to,hell i've had times where i was working on gathering for crafting and seen invasion spawn and not cleared them all i did how ever stop off here and there to help just for a change up. helps keep it fun for me with all the options and a good break from solo grinding leather.

Also forgot to mention right before I got Rift, I did a little surfing on the game it self ,some review and preview threads and some general forum threads....and I have to say that its been awhile where most of the threads for a new mmo  are not bitch bitch bitch/this sucks/ fail/ omg wtf so unpolished. But instead most threads have been on the postive/Plus side.

I think A lot of people took the 6 month plan to get the founders day sub pricing - I would say after 6 months we will know if the game is going to bleed subs or not.

My Server has a very healthy pop, too healthy in fact (Had a login queue last night over an hour)

Well, I"m sure the population will drop.

It's one thing to play a game with all the excitement of open beta and another to play a game day in and day out with a particular kind of game play.

It might also depend on what type of new content Trion introduces.

Just because something offers a trial doesn't mean it's any good either. I just did the trial for Vanguard and didn't enjoy it. Did a handfull of other trials also and ended up buying rift. In these days of the Internet, just do your research and you won't need a trial. You can watch videos on Youtube of people playing the first 10 minutes of the game.

I get your frequency, but I wouldn't rule out a game just because they don't offer a trial. Of course, I have the money to burn on a shitty game here and there if need be, although, I don't see Rift going that way.

To the OP, I wouldn't worry about the pop for at least 6-8 months once the fanatics start completing everything in the game there is to do (some will do it faster I know). Population is great at this time, so I would recommend to hop in and check it out.

The main problem is that as polished as it is, it's not complete and there's a lot of really little things that bug you. A few examples would be the horrible writing in quest dialog, "You're evil and should die!" "No way!" "Yes way! hahah" and stuff. Really shallow.

I also have a spell with no audio or visual feedback, just an animation.

Spell cooldown timers have nothing to do with their animations, which causes a lot of confusing disconnect sometimes, like the spell will be ready to cast again but still be in the middle of it's animation from the first casting, but not all spells act this way. Some spells que, but others won't.

Mage spell sound effects are very muted and blend too much into the background noise, especially rifts, so you lack the visceral feeling that combat should have it's just a droning whoosh sound mostly, no distinct spells effects. Many of the effects are reused.

Shift-click to break a stack doesn't always work and the tool tip of the item covers the slider count bar.

Lvl 8 mobs are able to dismount and completely rape a lvl 21 mage who was eating a sandwich and wasn't prepared for battle since she was in the freaking starting zone and never should have had to be prepared for battle.

The forced rifting can really be a bummer when you just want to level but instead have roving bands of elites murder you on the road.

Rift battles that make you run from one end of the map to the other only to have to immediately run back again never should happen.

No teleport or summon abilities so someone without a mount at the far end of the map has a super long, group waiting inducing, run back to town to bank stuff.

When you 'bind your soul' to the first soul recall point in Meridian it doesn't actually bind your soul there and doesn't tell you it didn't either, so you don't notice it till you're super far away, then you have to pay to fix the bug in the quest.

There's no social clothing and at least for mages every piece of armor you get from 1-20 looks the same and is ugly. You'd think the jump from Burlap to Cotton would be more than just a slight color difference in trim.

That's just a few of the annoying things I've noticed this weekend playing. So while it's better than most MMOs it's not as polished as it could be.
