From what i've read the pvp is pretty terribad. Is this strictly an A+ PVE game?   Every topic here talks about all the different aspects except one.... pvp I guess it's pve approved?

All the fans will say that TRION marketed as a PvE game the entire time.

As primarily a PvPer, I find the PvP aspect of Rift to be perfectly acceptable. It's a little clunky at the moment for my tastes, but nothing that can't be ironed out. I actually just encountered some rampant world PvP, so this game will have my sub until further notice.

Some balance issues exist, but it's pretty damn fun when everything is working well. I've only found myself complaining out loud once or twice at the OPness of some moves.

The only conceivable reason I would resub to a game like WoW after playing Rift, is that I have years invested there. No biggie, I didn't really like those people anyhow.

All kidding aside, it's a solid game. Sure, it doesn't have years of polish, but I think aside from some similarities to aforementioned popular MMO and other respectable attempts at the genre, it does have its own unique flavor.

Obviously this is just my opinion, and it isn't blowing my mind yet, like other MMOs have with PvP (WoW not among titans like DAOC), but it has a chance to become something very good.

    Here's to world PvP.

The deck of cards is the same with Rift as other games.  Its just a shuffled deck with extra cards added.  Some people like the same thing shuffled around.

I'm a fan of PvP, but I won't waste my time even trying PVP in any level-based MMOs anymore. Really enjoying the PvE, though. Always something to do and the community on Silkweb seems very friendly.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I had the beta since the first weekend, i just couldn't get over how much the icons and graphics all looked identical to warhammer. That put me off to be honest to start, and then i read that basically BG's is the only regular pvp available. World pvp is chance based on if you can find a rift at the end game. Would that be an acceptable conclusion? Would it also be an acceptable conclusion that there is no death penalty for pvp death, whether it's timer based or rank progression loss etc...? I don't expect full loot. If anything, i miss the open world FFA pvp. AOC tried, but  it was just too screwed up and instance based. Every other game does 2 factions which typically pvp wise equals fail. AIKA was doing it right from a free game perspective. Until that whole "We're re-releasing " and supposed blocking of people.

So i guess it's Guild wars 2 or bust?

    1.  New "almost" AAA-quality title in a long dry spell.

    2.  Gimicky shared dynamic content (i.e. Rifts) in a time when MMORPG gaming has turned to be too much on-rails

    3.  Great weapon/armor models

That's about it.  I do not predict longevity as the gameplay seems to be just wandering from quest hub to quest hub and fighting rifts.  Does not feel like a world to me and the linear layout makes me think there is little replay value once you've rolled one toon in each faction.

Definitely a popular game for the short run, IMO.

This reminds me of what people said about WoW when it launched, those who were playing EQ or DAoC said this...

Oh and add in complaints about Rested EXP and poor character models.

I hate to be the bearer of bad new to you, but all these games look and play the same. Some minor differences in them but overall nothing is new. So if games looking the same is your reason for not playing something your going to be real dissappointed when GW2 comes out. And i'm not trying to rip  the game, i do plan on playing it when it comes out.

I was PvPing in Rift a couple night ago, was the most fun that i'v had gaming in a long time. See the thing is Rift gave us a quailty game to play. You can PVE, which was the game primary focus, they kinda tell you that when that name it after a PVE aspect. But the Pvp is very polished and fun. Maybe not that most complex, but not everyone likes that. I would recommend this to every casual gamer that enjoys the AAA type of games that are out.

Why did you enjoy it though? What made you enjoy it? Was it that it was a relic defense? (that someone in your guild called you at 4am to defend?) Fort defense? a mile market zerg fight?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Man. DAOC still stands alone to this day heh

PS. Thanks Mark Jacobs + EA for screwing up WAR..

We need a 3 faction game, we really do.

I played beta from the beggening to the end and i'd say PvP is defiantly enjoyable, but it does get boring fast.. I'am a world pvp person and at the moment i was playing the world pvp seemed pointless.. Not only that some builds were extremley OP so a lvl 20 would be running around freemarch with like 5 other lvl 10-20's hitting on it and it wouldn't ever die lol..

Battle fronts are boring.. I'am not a fan of instanced pvp to begin with but battle fronts bored me even more then WoW's instanced pvp.. I hope Trion plans on expanding on the pvp over time because they got the PvE down for sure.

The world pvp is more in your face on pvp servers, than many other games, like my last one, Vanguard.  Vanguard on the team pvp, you had seperate continents, and it happend, but not as often....In Rift, once you get to your mid 20s or so, you start to play on other sides of zones, that the other side is also using....So you constantly are seeing and fighting other people.

Sure their is griefing and as with any game, their is better 1 vs 1 builds/souls, and if you are pveing, and someone is out to pvp, they can be set up better than you...The thing is, you can die, then switch to your pvp build on the fly and go get some revenge or kill some people on their side.  Their are objectives and open things, but not to the level that people are use to , say in DAoC.

They are kicking around like battlefront zones (which may have objectives?), and a contested dungeon, like Darkness Falls.  Those would be more options for the pve server crowd, and more to a less extent to the pvp servers.

If you don't like to be griefed, camped, and sometimes killed 20 to 1, I would say don't roll on a pvp server, as open world pvp is unavoidable, and it becomes very common once you get to your mid 20s.  I think the game is more up the ally of those solo 1 vs 1 pvpers right now, verse the objective pvp crowd.  I hope to get more onjective stuff in the future, as I often play more of a big battle class, and a crappy 1 vs 1 class.
