I'll preface this with "I'm not a fanboy" of Rift, but a seasoned MMO vet with experience playing many MMO's with the most recent being Wow Cataclysm.

This is just a really fun, polished game that takes much of what makes other MMO's great but kicks it up a notch. The graphics are not only stunning but I've yet to experience any lag even with large groups taking down rifts! My settings are on High which is just one step short of Ultra and I felt no need to go any further.

I've noticed many many posts with people saying" It's the same old thiing...nothing new here...move along" Have any of these people played Wow lately? Cataclysm was the same old crap with even more cutesy singing plants and sparkly horses. If any game could be accused of being the same ole same ole it's Wow. All that $$ and they were satisfied with the same content just repackaged.

I would like to remind people that this is just the LAUNCH of a new game and Trion does a better job IMO than the majority of established companies do with multiple expansions. There is so much room for new and excellent content for this talented dev team it'll be fun to see what the do with the game next!

There are some big challengers coming down the pike in the near future and the 2 that I'm watching and waiting for are Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars The Old Republic - the latter of I'm REALLY lloking forward to as a previous player of SWG and long time fan of Star Wars (saw the original in the theaters back in 1977...yeah..I'm old lol)

So - my sparkling review is based on my honest opinion of Rift - I have no fanboy agenda...I just love MMO's - and this is a real gem amongst all the unfinshed diamonds out there.

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

Once you get out of the initial area it gets even better.

I love the RIFT invasions! This morning all hell broke loose at the StoneQuarry!

Soooooo much better than Wow, that I almost dont want WoW players to come to RIFT and ruin it the way they ruined WoW.

I'll agree, for example, they didn't invent the public quest, but it sure works better than anything out there for an open grouping system.

Standard mechanics abound, but they just provide tweaks all the way around.  You want a collector issue, 10 bucks more.  And for that you get a 60% mount almost as soon as you start (once you find a mailbox) and it applies to all characters you create.  Brilliant actually.

Standard quest based leveling, but its about as painless as it can be (haven't hit a single kill 400 mobs to get 10 drops) yet at level 21 and since I'm not a huge fan of questing anyway, painless is better.

First dungeon I went in (IT) was decent for a starter, I only noobed it up once by falling off a staircase and into a pit of creatures, but group managed to save me.

Best game ever? No, but what it does it does well, and as long as you're not looking for something terribly innovating and not too burned out on the standar formula, you can probably find some fun in Rift.

Room for improvement, absolutely, in several places, but for it tries to be, it has successfully accomplished.

Hey Echolynfan!  I too saw SWG in theaters back in 1977...I just started middle school that year.

Anyway, glad to hear something positive on this game.  I am sure I would be playing it if i was in the states....I took a contract in Afghanistan and keep spending all my money on gems, jewelry and furs for my wife : (

Anyway, I saw a kid (soldier) in the PX who was buying WOW...apparently there is internet somewhere over here....I just need to find out where so I can jump in there.

Yes, I agree with what you said OP. I find rift to be entertaining and fresh with a famaliar feel to it, which to me is a good thing. It does not re-invent the wheel, but why does it need to? Because tired and sour gamers want to shake their fist at everything that comes out that dosent fit their needs? Well.. screw them. Tired and sour will stay tired and sour, so why waste time with them?

Its not innovative, its not ground breaking with all new never before seen mechanics and features and so what? Games dont need these things to be successfull and to be appealing. They just need a player base which the game seems to have, and to be made well, which it definatley seems to be.

I had a fun time in Rift last night.  I was questing and minding my own business when a loud horn and an on screen alert says something like,"Guardians, we are being attacked!!!  Come assist".   Or something like that.  Next the chats go crazy.   "Everyone come to such and such a place and help us defeat the boss."

So, I hurry and on my way there, I have to fight through mobs of bad guys, that were not there before but showed up based on this random attack.

Next, I finally make it to the area of the invasion, and there are so many players attacking this giant boss.   I jump in and easily join the group by simply hitting the "join group" button and help out.

It was fun.  It was exciting.  It was painless.  Haven't had fun like that in a long time.

I agree with the op.  Best game ever?  Nope.  But why does it have to be the best to be fun.  Is my wife the best woman on the planet, no but I stll married her......OUCH........................note to self, never mention your wife in a post while she's within head smacking distance....   :)

I care about what the game is right now.

Rift is polished. Some of it's categories are good, some are not so good, and none seem to me outstanding. It's a high quality current gen MMORPG, but not next-gen. For people who love generic theme park games, Rift is an awesome game. For people who want to experience something new, it's not.

It is hard to pinpoint but Rift provides something that just feels right.

I also saw Star Wars in the theater, I even got one of the T-shirts they handed out for seeing it opening week. That shirt would undoubtedly be worth something now, some litte jerk stole it while I was at the local public pool.

imo Rift is the best mmo out there right now.  It may not do everything totally new, but it does everything right.  I haven't had this much fun since WoW was fresh and new to me.  Without evening being able to completely explain it, Rift just feels fun.

Oh I totally agree with you but what I meant was (and should have made clearer) is that this is just a brand new game and it rocks - imagine what Trion could do with future expansions and updates!

I also tend to judge MMO's on the initial Launch like I judge good Italian restaurants: If they make a good meatball everyhting else will be excellent :)

Like I have said. They took the genre and started moving it forward. It is not a leap like some people are expecting GW2, but it just moves it on every front.

  • Snaylor47Snaylor47 Member Posts: 962

As someone who is waiting for GW2 and SWTOR I could generally care less about RIFT and think WoW can more tie me over until TOR is released.  I played RIFT in beta and thought, "While not exactly like WoW it shares enough simularitys for me not to switch over" I did after all in WoW just get my WOrgen druid up to 85.

I am still waiting for the shinyness of RIFT to wear off and the reality to set in. RIFT is too much like WoW when compared to games like TOR and GW. Alot of my gaming friends have taken notice of this and will simple continue to play WoW untill GW2 or TOR comes out.

    TL;DR

It all comes down to personally taste, I like the WoW universe and the Star Wars universe, and have no interest in RIFT lore. So its obvious which games I am going to play.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

There's no such thing as something new when it comes to MMO's. Atleast when it comes to quailty ones. Take SWTOR they arn't going to drop 100m+ on making a game that they don't know people will like. They may add a couple of unique elemnets, but in large they are just going to do their own version of what is already out there.

People that say its the same old thing arent saying it isnt polished.

WoW is the same game with great updates, not always the best but its always changing and growing. You want it to turn into an fps? I really dont understand your point here.

Its one thing to say "WoW hasnt changed much over the years" which would be a lie and its another to say "this new game doesnt offer anything new."

Sorry sir but you lost any credibility you had when you tried to compare the game to an expansion. OF COURSE an expansion to a game is going to be more of that game. How dense do you have to be to miss that lol.

It's an expansion, they don't have to come out with a new game, it's supposed to be more of the same, that's what an expansion is. Talk about dense lol. When a 'new' game releases and it's pretty much the same thing another company has been doing for 7 years then yes you can say it's 'more of the same'.

I acknowledge the great launch, that's refreshing, but I feel like the word "polished" is being tossed around so loosely here it's sickening.

For some reason people seem to think that a game is polished when it 'works'. No, a game is polished when it's beyond working and on to a league of its own. Rift works, fairly well if that, but I wouldn't say it's 'polished'. A polish is a finish...

Oh wow what a post. If you dint sound so serious I`d totally pass this off as a joke...

Just because WoW is dishing out stale content, by default any other MMO doing the same is A-OK? And for not being a fanboy you sure are praising the mere footsteps these devs make...C`mon.

Dont drop your expectations of what MMOs must be just because WoW is become such a drain, like you said there are better games coming out in the near future, lets not start giving New games(This) high points just because they are a slightly tinkered and moderately better Old game(WoW).

Ok - sorry I lost you on my point...let me clarify:

Wow still has yet to balance the classes for PVP - it's never been anywhere close since I've played on and off for the last 5 years. Cataclysm was supoosed to fix all that and made it worse.

The new battlegrounds were a re-design of Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch -they just look different. Tol Barad is a freaking joke.

More dungeons...more raiding...same way to get gear...blah blah

Graphics were updated and still look like a cartoon (this may be their "style" but it's never impressed me)

And there's freaking lag which in my opinion shouldn't exist with those cartoony graphics.

The community is full of 12 year olds...both in mind and body

Bottom line: Wow should be light years ahead of everyone with their game but they got lazy because there aren't any real challengers out there. I predeict this will change once they start losing subs and with games like Rift...GW2 and SWTOR - they will.

Rift looks better...plays better...pve is more fun (and I haven't even gotten into the PVP aspect of the game yet I'm having so much fun) the quests are more fun. Fundamentally it's a better game than Wow even though it just came out.

    Rift is just the begiining.

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

LOL - I have news for you...I dropped my expecations for MMO's after SOE destroyed SWG - which had so much potential it makes me cry.

I've decided to protect myself where SWTOR is concerned and while very excited at what could be - I'm waiting until I'm playing it before I get too excited.

I never said Rift was everything an MMO could be - I said it's a really fun game that runs smooth as silk and with loads of potential down the road. Do I think it's better than Wow....yes I do.

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
