Rift Shards - More servers?

IzorkIzork Member UncommonPosts: 381

Time to add new servers?

EU Shard status ATM (Checked 5 minutes ago):

15 Medium

12 High

14 Full

US Shard status ATM (Checked 5 minutes ago):

23 Medium

33 High

1 Full

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So.. I don't get it.

People on these forums raged and told me and others that the servers would soon merge and the game would be burried just like the other games..

Now I just don't see this happening.

Right now they actually need MORE servers, even more.

Actually it all depends on Trion now. So far they have done a good work but in a month or two they should start pushing out new content to keep players. If they can do that then I don't see any point in leaving the game that so far is really fun to play.

Rifts will find a good population base but the question mark is can they weather the storm this winter when SWTOR and GW2 come out. Hopefully they have major content update planned around fall.

Seriously how many games besides Rift will be affected by Swtor and GW 2 .It is not like Rift will be the only game affected.

They already have a new content patch on the new alpha server.

New 10man rift raids and loads of other good stuff!

Very few players quit a game a week after release, no matter how good or bad it is. You will want to look at the population after the first free month and then after the bundled 3 month package to see whether the servers are at a good spot or not. When almost half the servers are medium though it doesn't mean they need more servers.

The other thing those numbers say is they increased the max players per server recently most likely. That is the only thing that makes sense looking at those numbers and it makes sense that now that the player base is spread out more they could up the max.

You cannot really judge shard pop on weekend play.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

it's the first game i've seen that outdoes world of you-know-what at its own game, and I hope it does well.

I can only speak for myself and say that, for people like me who play 2 games, it's a great compliment to my other game (eve).  I feel like these 2 give me the best of both worlds.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

uhh no.  they need to allow their servers to hold 'more' people.  the 40's level zones are pretty empty(maybe 20-30 people in the area at a given time) on the highest populated NA server atm.  the game feels empty yet there are long queue's to get into it?  thats crap.  more servers aren't the answer.  i'm comparing this to old mmo's i played, like EQ, AC, etc where there was no queue, and often hundreds of people in the same areas.

Only issues I see on the horizon.

    1. lvl 10 mobs knocking you off lvl 50 mobs. I see this getting fixed when people REALLY start raging

    2. class balance. no mmo ever will solve this. People crying for Saboteur nerfs saying they will quit if Trion does not submit to their wishes. I saw this a lot with Blizzard and WoW and see what happened there.

    3. Authenticators. This should honestly be required in MMO releases. I honestly have no idea why Trion over looked this when they released the game. I would put my money on this costing them a lot of subs because people refuse to stop buying RMT and then blame Trion for getting hacked.

Eh, EQ also had quite a bit of lag when so many people were in a zone.

Yeah, haven't seen him around for a number of days now, his posting stopped abruptly. Maybe he got banned, or mods discovered Prague's was a duplicate account of a former poster, or such.

It's a shame though, it would be interesting what he'd come up with now that Rift has 99 servers, in contrast to his earlier confident predictions that Rift would have only 200-300k at headstart and maybe 400k max at launch, and that Rift's vastly less subs than MMO's like AoC and WAR would mean that themepark MMO's would decline... except for WoW, of course.

    38 servers at medium...

I don't think they need more yet..

  • ProsonProson Member UncommonPosts: 544

Well, its been what, a week?? give it another month or two then im assuming population will start dropping, Not cause its a bad game, but has there been any games the last 6 years that has keept a steady population from the time they launched?

All games need more servers the first few weeks, ofc they will be full and abit overcrowded, but i would rather have 10 full servers with queues on then 50 medium/high/full server then in 2 months you get 50 low/medium servers instead of 10 medium/high. Every game i can remember has had to merge servers. Vanguard, AoC, WAR, Aion (i think?) LoTRO before it went f2p. So i dont get why every game keeps adding tons of servers the launch week, just let there be some queue until it cools down.

The true tests of a MMO come after 1 month, 3 months and 6 months.  After that, you pretty much have an accurate picture on the viability and success of a MMO.

Since there are no low servers but still plenty of medium servers, I don't see why they should add more.  I suppose they could add a few more to relieve the FULL servers but those players by now are there to stay and won't move even if new servers did open up.

From preliminary figures, Rift looks pretty solid.  I'm guessing anywhere from 300K-500K players which is a very strong launch.
