Obvious trolling aside, having a recover button is actually a good thing, and here's why:

    - Files, no matter what they are or what program they're part of, have a chance to get corrupted, for various reasons. It could be a failed update due to a computer crash (not Trion's fault), it could be that you decided to move the game folder to another hard drive (again, not Trion's fault) or any number of other reasons.

    - What the recover button does, quite simply, is check the integrity of your files, re-download only the files it needs rather than having to re-download the entire client, and fixes your file registry, so everything points in the right direction.

    - Recovery options are standard in many games, and in many MMO's. In World of Warcraft, for example, it can be found on your launcher, under help -> repair tool.

    - The only thing Trion has done differently is that the recovery button is more visible, and it can also fix certain in-game issues.

    - Also, I will note that while client crashes have been exceedingly rare, actual file corruption from these are even rarer. What's more, the client will start up again automatically, log you into the game, and back into the character you were playing when the client crashed. What other MMO does that?

Sorry guy, but your argument is not only invalid, but also incoherent and neither funny nor intelligent.

    thanks for your comment..

and i was never a good english person

I am asking why do we need to run recover and why would it be a good idea?

first time I download a missing texture file 173 megs i think. (i thougt man Trion is on the ball)

second  i beleive it was the same file

    third time 1.9GB of files

fourth another like 173 meg file

next thing = replace what someone told me on Trion forum my bad harddrive

    reloaded windows completely

    played game 10mins

    computer locked up

login to game after restart .. you must run recover at your next free time

i posted on forum used a tech support request to Trion

info i get you must send a DXDIAG.TXT  file

    i sent that..

also this RECOVER thing and this Lockup and Computer shutdown started after the last patch.

I had no problems untill then Beta was perfect.

i am  upset cause i really liked the game and i miss playing it.

and please talk about english to someone else..

if you couldn't understand what i wrote then why did you post a clear and understandable answer to my post

other games are playing with no problems.

By the way.... I THOUGHT THE RECOVER IDEA WAS ANOTHER PREFECT SOLUTION TO A ALREADY PERFECT GAME

i think now that the RECOVER button was put in there cause of bad programing on Trion part or cause they wanted to release the game quick.,

My apologies, I assumed from the formatting in your initial post that you were trolling. As way of an apology, I'll try and offer any advice I can to your problem.

    -------------------

I started playing in Beta 5, and the Recover button was in back then as well (I know because I had to use it), so it wasn't something that was put in at launch to cover up bad programming. From your description though, it sounds like a more serious issue than just Rift, and something more than the Recover button can handle.

Most people have no problems at all of the sort that you describe, although as with any game, some graphics cards will handle the game better than others (and framerate issues is the most common problem that I've seen). However, a full-on client or computer crash is a different issue, and is very likely caused by either faulty hardware or possibly a driver issue, meaning that the fault isn't with the client, but rather with your computer. The fact that your files keep getting corrupted after crashes would also point towards it being a hardware issue - If your hard drive has a few bad sectors on it, that can easily muck up your programs.

What exactly happens when you get a crash? Is it just a client crash, or is it your entire computer crashing? What I'd do is start backtracking where the problem could be. You said it played fine in the Beta - What changed on your end from Beta to live? A few things to check:

    - Did you install the game in a different directory?

    - Did you remember to properly uninstall the Beta client and manually delete any "leftovers" before installing the live client?

    - Did any of your hardware change since the beta (changed graphics card, hard drives, get more RAM, etc.)?

If the problem is a bad hard drive, as was suggested to you, then I would suggest (if you have the option) to uninstall Rift, and try and install it on a different hard drive. Pretty much any drive will do for the purpose of testing, even an external hard drive. If you can run it stable from a different hard drive (it probably won't be as smooth running from an external, but it should still be stable enough to keep running). If it does, then you can be fairly sure that it is, in fact, a bad hard drive causing your crashes, and you'd need to replace that hard drive as soon as possible.

The DXDiag file that you were asked to send in contains most of not all of the information that Trion would need to troubleshoot your problem and to figure out if the problem is indeed with the client or not. I'd keep trying on their forums / tech support, and be sure to give as much, and as detailed information as you can. The more they know, the higher a chance they have of figuring out what's wrong.

    Hope it helps

I think you've forgotten to uninstall the Beta client and reinstall the game with the release client.

ok so hold on. You think the recover button recovers you in a raid? This has got to be a troll. It fixes corrupted files or lost data between your isp and Trion.

  • JTJT Member Posts: 401

Rift isn't the first mmo that checks the integrity of files.  Some do it automatically, some with a button.

Holy Crap reading this thread is like an Acid trip! Flashes of reality flooded by utter nonsense!

EDIT: Just for kicks, what kind of Video Card do you have? Might?? be able to help?? you.

Its something on your end not Trions.

As people have already stated the Recover button is there to download any missing files or corrupted data that can, and will happen on occasion.

This option is actually present in many online games, just maybe not as in your face as the Recover button is in rift. Good luck and hopefully you can find and fix the problem. Speaking only for myself I am not having any problems at all with the client, running on ultra settings with edge smoothing enabled and runs just fine.

Hope it works out for ya =)

    edit: I see your response.

I havec noticed that on Windows 7, isntalling games to the default folder is just not a good thing.

I have made a "games" folder where I install my games and that has solved several problems that I've had with some games.

    Hello Guys,

Those of you who are running WINDOWS 7 / WINDOWS VISTA and recieve the message that your game needs to be recovered after you log in to the game please read:

I recently got this error to recover my game files after patching.  I realized this was my mistake and have an easy remedy if you are having the same problem.  You should have a shortcut to rift mine is on the desktop.  If not create one.  Right-Click your RIFT shortcut and select the property's option in the small menu that appears.  Go to the tab compatibility in the new window that appears.  In this tab at the very bottom should be a small check box that says "run this as administrator" click the box so there is a check mark inside of it.  Now Click the Apply THEN Ok button.  The Window Closes and you are now ready to run the rift shortcut.  Simply double click it(or single click if you changed your windows settings to act like hyperlinks)  Once the launcher opens you must first login so that you see the patch notes and the play button.  On the bottom right there should now be a button that says RECOVER.  Click it and wait till it is done.  It took me 10 minutes.  Launch the game and the message box to do a game recovery should no longer appear.

    Best,
