Hi guys, I love RIFT so far and I'm lvl 22 Mage (I used to be warrior or melee but my whole guild is Warrior -.-)
So I decided to play more PvP, which I really like it so far (similar to WAR compare to warfront and sc, which is a welcome edition and got me hook in WAR), but when I'm going into Codex, I don't deal too much dmg at all while when the warrior/rogue gets close, I'm pretty much a goner without any escape skill that helps me.
Here I wanna ask if any mage out here may be able to share your Mage experience in Warfront/pvp ? Like your build or any strategy to play mage?
Thx any info will help!!

Well. I'm a mage. I play alot fo pvp and always end in the 3first in damage done, if i have a good team with couple healer.
So far, I'm a full necro/warloc build. Max in encro, rest in warlock and dominator as free transmo. Once you get the life drain, you just need to spam your 2/3dot then life drain and gg you got a kill. You'r almost unbeatable in 1on1. Unless a rogue come behind you and stun you to death,
If you're not doing any damage... you got a crappy soul/combo :P
You said it yourself... don't let wars or rogues get close to you. You're a ranged caster. Up close, I can cut thru you like tissue paper and you will be dead before you can turn to run away.

Oh Great!! I am gonna try out these builds!!!
By the way, how do I earn more soul after I already chosen the 3 souls at the beginning?
So far I can only learn one more skills as Stormcaller.
Any guide for me to learn others ?
You can get all soul at meridian, you need to do some easy quest and it's your after that. You buy new role and then play more build with out hurtning your main build you prefer.
I roll with a war/necro/chloro build and have no problems with rogues or warriors, my only problems come up when i face a cleric with heals. Other than that i can 1v1 anybody else, it actually takes half a team to kill me. My fav are the stealth and stun rogues. Come up behind you and stun and take you down to half life, well when the stun is up i just pop bloom and im back to full. I than proceed to DoT them up real good making sure i put spores and withering vines on them and than soul draining.
I also throw in a healing debuff just incase they have a bard soul to make sure they dont heal themselves backup. They either die or try to run away after seeing that they didnt have an easy kill.Make sure you are putting runes on your gear the extra intellect and spell crit runes really helps alot, because your DoTs and soul purge well crit like crazy as well as stream of reclamation which is in the chloro soul.
I too though mages were lacking, but i resouled and respecced at lvl20 to my current war/necro/chloro build. And have been wiping faces ever since.
Gormok what's your build?
Dominator. It provides with a spell that turn your enemies into a squirrel. That will give you time to move away from them and nuke them. The spell won't break when you hit them. I like to play rogue in PvP, but the dominator is my favorite so far.
So far im 15 warlock 28 necro and 11 chloro, im going to finish out by putting my last few points into warlock. I went 11 pts in chloro to get bloom, and the talents to make it an instant cast along with the talents to buff lifegiving veil. Making it heal you for 80% of the damage done. The 28 pts in necro was so i could take soul purge and pickup my other 2 pets, as well as the talents to buff their damage and health, and i also needed to unlock fear and wither which is a 70% movement speed debuff. My pts in warlock were a matter of preference, there are damage increase talents and there is also a health buff in there.
Yeah alot of people say Domo is really good, but i didnt find it much to my liking. i found war/necro/chloro to play more like a WoW lock without the fear DoT spam. But the drain tank is insane, like i said it takes half a team to kill me because chloro gives me reactive healing and soul purge is like a direct heal with damage, sorta like the bard cadance heal.
Thx for all the info, I might go and pick up the skills now.
I am speccing Pyro/Elem... maybe that is my problem (I do have lots of killing blows... but only on Black Garden)
Anyway, One more question, do you guys buy pvp gear in early stage or just saving up for end game pvp gear ?
For end game gear you'll need either prestige or reputation with warfront factions. No wonder most of them don't give gear that is anything lower than 45. By the time you get the reputation and favor needed, you should be 50 already.
Prestige is a form of PvP levels.
Oh I see...
thank you for the clarification!
Necro/lock is very strong from what I could try (especially after level 16 and Soul Purge in the Necro tree). But the other pairings I tried were a bit disappointing. Not bad and still very playable, but I felt overall I could do better on my warrior on almost every aspect. It's a bit odd for example that my Riftblade is better at kiting mobs and burning them down fast (yes a range kiting warrior !) than any mage's soul because of its instant slow on a low cd.
Mages really lack an instant slow and have often to rely on pets to tank for them, turning them more into warlocks than mages if you use WoW's terminology. Anyway, they may become much stronger in late levels, I havent got there already so I really cant say.

I dont wanna sound like a troll, but you're going to get facestomped at 35-44 by any class as a Mage.
They just aren't that strong at early levels and are especially weak when players get things like Titan Strike..... Since there's 9 million Warriors, you will see lots of these.
Once you hit 44 though - the QQ will turn the other cheek. Go Pyro, get GoS and win the internet....!
