anything that allowes your character to continuosly preform actions without any imput from a live person, autorun excluded since that is a game mechanic.
as far as i know, if they suspect you are akf swimming they will disconnect you from the server. they really cannot ban you since they can't be sure you are not at your computer watching yourself swimming. everybody afk swims in this game.
Keyboard macros and mouse macros allow short sequences of keystrokes and mouse actions to be transformed into other, usually more time-consuming, sequences of keystrokes and mouse actions. In this way, frequently-used or repetitivesequences of keystrokes and mouse movements can be automated. Separate programs for creating these macros are called macro recorders.

Macros has nothing to do with unintelligent bots, but the rest of your post was pretty good.
Not botting. All you do is settting up a cycle of action that you do over and over again. Can be on a immobile player or when you buff yourself. Yes, you can progress all your skills on immobile players.
The TOS will say that it is not allowed to macro, but today, the GM's dont care about the TOS. They use to ban ppl for macroing like a year ago, but all it did was hurting the game even more. DF grind is so horible on its own that without macroing, the game would probably die already.
Even at mmmorpg.com, i use to get banned millions of time for mentioning macro or swimming. I did it on purpose since i really wanted them to see how DF is. Its basically the only mmorpg that ignore macroing, so i can see why i got banned for that in here.

Yeah, that's exactly what they are.
A bot is a program that replicates reptative user actions as if they were playing the game, it takes into account mobs, spells, playstyle, sometimes even chats with other players etc. etc. and what not. Generally used to farm XP or Gold hours on end. A Macro replicates simple actions, like pressing a single button for hours on end.
There is a very popular and very advanced WoW Bot out there, written completely in AutoIt, which is a Macro Scripting Language. It's actually much better than the old bot Glider, that Blizzard zero'd in on. (see MDY v Blizz)
There is no difference, other than a bot is generally considered to be able to play the game intelligently, where as a Macro just replicates a single action or a set of actions.
I am very familiar with the world of botting.
Edit:
Well, I guess there are 2 definitions of Macro really. A Game Macro, where a single key press can perform a set of actions usually based around in game elements and a Macro used when the term "Macroing" is thrown around, which is generally considered to be automated repetative actions. I'm talking about Macroing.
I wrote a quick Game Macro when I played DF to switch up weapons and armor just by pressing the 5th button on my mouse. But, that was using an external program.

Well macros can be based on colors, sounds and such - which essentially makes it possible to code a bot through a complec macro..
This is another macro, lets see how people will think of this
Lts call it "advertise"
/trade "Please visit my vendor at chilliburn, full stocked on weapons, armors and food"
/pause 300;
/macro adverstise;
And how you think about that macro ?
macro equip shield and sword by cklicking 'a'
a::
/toolbarslot01; //equips shields
/toolbarslot02; //equips sword
Bottomline of this is, macro isn't in all cases = evil activity, Aventurine has defined that the bannable offense starts if macros being used AFK. Macroing is legal as long as it doesn't happen when you not at the keyboard.
-----MY-TERMS-OF-USE-------------------------------------------------- $OE - eternal enemy of online gaming -We finally WON !!!! 2011 $OE accepted that they have been fired 2005 by the playerbase and closed down ridiculous NGE !!

Personally i hope that companies will eventually slap this highlighted part into the EULA and make it a bannable offense if caught AFK'ing, it ruins games in my opinion.

a good example of a macro is this..
<macro name> in this case i'll use "AFK"
/ToolbarSlot00; <initiates a skill in the first box, a bomb dropped at your feet for this example>
/pause 10; <waits 10 seconds then moves to next line>
/ToolbarSlot01; <initiates a skill in the second box, a personal heal in this case>
/pause 10; <waits 10 seconds then moves to next line>
/macro AFK; <restarts the macro so it's on a loop>
This is a very basic macro in the format that is/was used in SWG and explains what a macro is much better than trying to describe one.
