pretty much what every other theme park mmo offers, pve, questing, raids, battle grounds, world pvp, political system, plus of course gorgeous graphics.

Everything else you would expect to see in a mmorpg. It is a mmorpg, it just has twitch based combat instead of Tab-targeting.

Twitch combat in a WOW clone. Should make some folks happy for a bit.
If anything the game resembles other Korean MMO's such as Lineage or Aion, I really wish this forum purged any posts with the word "WoW Clone" in it, because people who use the term obviously lack the intellect to express their view of a game without it.
Perhaps you'd like to take the time to explain why you think this is anything like World of Warcraft in a manner which people could have a constructive conversation about the game.
Or just say you dont like it, thats what people who use the term usually mean when they say it anyway...
EDIT: Also, if you read up on the game you would see it offers a lot more than just fancy combat, As far as I know this is the first MMO which will support a political system, meaning that players can nominate, vote and even run for office in major cities, giving them access to special options to 'control' cities. Be a Tyrant and you may be deposed by your people, Become a beacon of leadership and reign over the kingdom through wisdom and you may last to become part of the hall of fame.
Sounds pretty interesting to me, but you guys wouldnt know that since you all judge a book by its cover apparently...
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.
I am pretty sure i read somewhere that TERA ain't well received in Korea, one problem seems to be the steep leveling curve and general unbalance between melee and ranged classes.
And from what i saw on Justin.tv i am not interested anymore, the game provides nothing apart the combat system and that one is overrated.

Sounds nice for PvP, but then again I'm not willing to pay $15 dollars a month for just PvP. I can easily get that in Bloodline Champions, World of Tanks or GW. Is there anything else to it besides combat and politics?
I would like to point out that the OP only talks about animations ... I really couldnt care less about animations. Its how the class operates.
As a healer, I prefer a "classic" tank who gets a reliable stream of low damage over a "funky" tank who may die anytime from two unlucky hits in short sequence.
A lot of MMO gamers cant do it, the twitch based MMO gaming style that they are going to implement. And when it is all said and done, tera is being made by a koean company, American players have already shown they dont like korean playstyle.
After the awe of a new MMO and fancy graphics have faded, you are left with realizing you are playing a game that has 2 masters and you are the minority, it will be a grind fest and if you dont like grinding you wont survive.

lol I am so sick and tired of people trying to argue "reality" when it comes to video games.
Not only is that just a stupid argument in the first place but how many fantasy movies do you see a warrior stand toe to toe against giant ogres and dragons without dodging and rolling around and hiding behind big rocks or something?
They never stand there and just take a beating, im pretty sure moving around and dodging is much more realistic than standing in front of a train and waiting for it to hit you.
The best way I could describe it is more about suspension of disbelief than it is about reality.
Games and movies are filled with impossible unrealistic actions all the time, but if they are presented in such a way that the audience doesn't get pulled away from the immersion and be forced to think "that's impossible" then it is done properly. The movement doesn't bother me so much as the size of the axe does. It looks so out of place in the middle of all those awesome graphics that is looks looney toon. Beautiful looking game though.
As for "this is how tanking should be done" I'm not seeing it. The tank looks to be chasing the slug thing all over the place. He never actually looks in control of anything. All it is missing is the benny hill music.

Originally posted by Beezerbeez Not saying I'm a fan of action MMO combat by any means, but the idea that a tank has to stand in place may be recent, and simultaneously, dated. No self-respecting warrior in the middle ages would have stood and absorbed any blows from an enemy, of course. Dodging and mobility were historically essential concepts in both offensive and defensive forms. Check out some of the publicly available information at ARMA's website if you're interested: http://www.thearma.org/ or check out Medieval Swordsmanship by John Clements from your public library. Whether or not its implementation works in a game remains to be seen but I'm open to the idea.
If you want to get historical, the guys wearing armor did not usually fight guys wearing armor very often. They were the guys with some money and they didn't want to lose it. Basically, they waited until they could just start plowing through all the guys without armor.
Imagine a knight jousting, but instead of jousting other knights, they joust through a bunch of foot soldiers wearing (seriously) cotton padded cloth armor. If they got bogged down, they hacked away with their swords which didn't really cut so much as break bones and skulls. If the little no armor guys were lucky, they pulled the knight off the horse and hit him with hammers enough that he died.
I'm pretty sure they never had to fight a giant slug or even a dragon. They rarely even fought other knights because they might actually lose.
* edit * There has been a lot of focus on Tera's combat, which is an area that mmorpg could be improved to be sure, but I hope the rest of the game is more than just the usual stuff. Standard mmorpg combat is usually 'good enough' and the rest of the game is more important (imo) so some focus should be spent there. However, since they are looking at improving things, hopefully they've gone beyond just the combat.

A lot of people like "realism" in their entertainment via movies, tv, games. Ive always personally loved being entertained by imagination.
I love the movie "Wanted" and there aint a damn thing "realistic" about it you know.
What pisses me off most tho is when people mention something not being realistic in an obviously unrealistic form of entertainment.
Its one thing if you expect some realism in a game like Black Ops and another to expect realism in Hello Kitty Online.
Im down for realistic mechanics and graphics and whatever but i cant help but get mad when people look at an obviously intentional unrealistic idea, movie, game, book and complain about its lack of realism.
I want my character to carry an axe bigger than a skyscraper (exagerrating). Of course i dont want that in every game, but i do want it. I love so much of the korean style themes and art in their games and then it comes here and gets demolished by westernization. It makes me sad.

I prefer this kind of action oriented gameplay. Its not exactly new though. DDO has had combat like this for 5 years already. Considering that DDO has my favorite combat system in any MMOG, I look forward to trying Tera. Hopefully they won't screw it up, but I'm not getting my hopes up until I try it myself.
I agree reality doesn't always translte well into actual gameplay. A dragon would crush a human, regardless of armor for example. A giant swinging a 12 foot club would knock players across a room even if it was blocked with a shield.
Likewise I think most people would be surprised just how mobile a person can be in full plate armor. I have a full suit myself, but in no way I could move like that. Move quickly yes, but not like that. However put that same armor in a backpack and it would hamper movement beyond belief. Yet I never hear people in mmos complaining about lugging around 10 suits of armor and 10 swords in their packs.

It makes me wonder how well it would work to make a game that used realist loot weights and carrying capacity. The only loot you would want would be things like money, gems, and baubles. You could even have a 'salvager' type of role; a party member with a donkey that does nothing but clean up the loot, repair, and maybe buff the party a little. It could be realistic, but would it be fun?
As far as i can tell from that video, The guy ISNT tanking. He is jumping around sure, it looks kinda fun and action packed. But the mobs are concentrating on other players moreso than on him, and much of that jumping around seems irrelevant to the fight. He is dodging when he isnt even targeted. Its like bunnyhopping got good animations.

But that has more to do with the player and not the class per say. And if you watched the aggro meter (red circle under the character's feet) you will notice he lost hate quite often, mostly due to the fact that he missed alot of attacks.

which was then followed by stayontarget's comment about "everything you'd expect to see in a mmorpg" to which I responded to.
It sure sounds like in many ways (political system aside) this game is following the traditional theme park game design forumla made popular over the years by games such as EQ, WOW, AOC, LOTRO etc etc (aka WOW clone for the less intellectual among us).
It is quite possible to design a game without following that model you know, w/o raids, w/o battlegrounds, w/o levels, w/o classes etc etc. But not if they are following the more traditional model which it appears they are. (though I'm suspecting Lineage clone will turn out to be more accurate)
Best answer I heard to my original reply was that its an Eastern oriented MMO (I had forgotten that) and warriors didn't wear Western European style plate, rather it was more leather/mail based it would be possible for warriors to be more agile in that case. (still don't agree with tumbling unless you're a ninja or something, bet even samauri don't tumble)
Yes I know, there is a suspension of reality in all MMO's, but like some folks said, there's a point where the Roger Rabbit size weapons really start to take away from the gameplay, in the case of MMO's, for me I guess I draw the line at tumbling. DDO has it, I did't like it there, still don't like it. That's OK, this might not be the game for me.
In fact though, its political system might be the one real hook for me, always loved the politics of Lineage 1 and Lineage 2 and if they manage to recreate that here then perhaps I can tolerate the circus style combat.

It's the warrior class in TERA tanking. Looks like fun tumbling around to dodge shit instead of stacking HP/defense and calling that tanking.
Because its completely realistic for someone wearing plate mail to "tumble" while their fighting something.
Traditionally those sort of moves are reserved for Rogue classes who are wearing leather. Warriors should be blocking/parrying and smacking stuff with a big stick.

Yes it is.
Swimming and sommersaults are no problem in a field plate armor, as long as the person wearing said armor is well trained.
For its actually just carrying around about 20 kg of additional weight, tailor fit and well distributed over your body.
Combat is one of the things that gave WoW it's edge so if Tera has a better combat system, it could do very well.
Yah, old geezers would be at a disadvantage.
