Well, Blizzard is willing to discuss taking WoW f2p, and Dragon Age 2 is getting a new a**hole torn by the collective gaming community over being a linear, poorly written rush job.

When WoW goes F2P and a Bioware game flops, I suspect the end will be neigh. That flop may just be that Star Wars MMO they're working on.

Well if the blizzard is open for wow to be a f2p well many players will react to that specially their old players.... they might think it's unfair...

O... hai. I can' help but notice you posting links to review sites.

Is this a joke or do you seriously think the gaming press is anything more than a marketing driven shill industry?

Seriously, spend some time looking at the user score on Metacritic, or delve into the forums at social.bioware.com or The Escapist

I specifically said "gaming community" and not "reviewers" for a reason.

I have to agree. What the reviewers are saying and what the general concensus among gamers is are totally different on this one. This game has not been well received by gamers even though review sites have been praising it. I'm glad I listened to my gut and didn't buy DA2 as it seems like it has the whole gaming community grabbing their pitchforks and torches. I played the demo and thought it was very 'meh' but thought that I may be judging the game prematurely. I can see now that my initial feeling was pretty close to the mark.

It's when people stop buying games because they are sick of buggy rushed recycled garbage with the label of being the 'next big thing'. At the end of 1982 Atari released 'ET the Extraterrestrial' with great hype and promises of being the end all, be all of video gaming... What people got was a totally unplayable rushed piece of total garbage that not only was the worst game ever conceived but also had nothing to do with the movie it was based on. It shook people's confidence in the gaming industry so bad that people stopped buying games across the board and caused the single greatest crash the industry has ever seen. It took years for the industry to recover.

Not to sound like a susipicious Sally, but the video crash occured when developers overproduced insanely bad titles and the market became oversaturated. At the moment gaming is on a high, I mean we have just seen a year where Call of Duty has sold almost 20 million units, Cataclysm upwards of 5 million...and those are the big games, even smaller titles have sold in excess of a million over multiple platforms. If a crash was impending, WoW turning to F2P and Dragon Age getting an "8" rather than a "9" isn't going to doom the industry - and neither will the success of Knights of the Old Republic.

  • NeonShadowNeonShadow Member UncommonPosts: 326

WoW going F2P is anything but a sign of doom n' gloom. It's just Blizzard going with the times and bracing for the next method how games will be played and payed for. Subscription based games will be a thing of the past within 10 years. Heck, even now WoW doesn't have a monthly sub in asia. It never did.

Meta Critic is a much better source to gauge a game. It combines critic reviews as well as player reviews. You can really tell when a game developer has, or hasn't, paid off the critics. Bioware definitely paid off the critics this time around.

Another factor is simply the size of the industry and the wide range of genres it covers. Supposed the MMORPG industry crashed, the FPS industry (including any MMOFPS) would be fine. If the FPS industry crashed, the RPG or RTS industry would probably be just fine. Personally, I think things are actually heading up, not down. Most of the 20 or so games I've installed on my computer in the past year or so actually worked well. Very few clunkers, and the ones that were clunkers were free or betas.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I hope you realise that the internet is full of people who review games without ever playing them, and giving games bad reviews becouse they prefered the last game or the last series the company has made, or becouse they hate the Dev, Publisher, CEO, PR person, Peter Molyneux, Santa Claus, Pie. User reviews for the most part are not worth a damn, make your own decisions. Example: If I had listend to reviews both profesional and user about Homefront I would not be playing one of the most fun online shooters Ive played since BF2. If you make your opinions based on other people opinions you are guaranteed to miss out on good games.

Yeah, I've been on the Internet since it was Unix based so I know full well what people are like. Go to Metacritic and read the stark difference between the critic's reviews and the player reviews. Some may be people just bashing the game but there are hundreds of them all saying basically the same thing. Even if 50% of them are people just bashing you can't discount the other 50% that are true player impressions. I played the demo and thought it was bad... I've read the reviews which overwhelmingly say it is bad... That leads to the only logical conclusion that this game IS bad. I'll buy it when it hits the bargin bin for 10 bucks or less which shouldn't be long the way this one is going.

Having been in the bioware forums since the day after DA2 launched, which was when I beat it I can go ahead an say a few things. I don't see a crash coming but I do see a rift forming between the types of players and I don't think F2P will become the main stream in 10 years, maybe less than that but it will never be an across the board thing. F2P gamers and much like DLC buyers they have actually made the industry worse not better, companies now release unfinished products just to cash in on people paying extra money for things that should have been in the game from the start. If a game crash does come it will be the F2P and B2P games in a combination with the economy that brings it forth.

It will be a while coming before it happens though, why because a lot of younger gamers out there that like the F2P and B2P models aren't really seeing the down side to it. They see it as 40 dollars for the game, and seven or eight dollars every now and then for new content, that is actually pretty true for some mmos, but not all of them. Lets look at STO it's dlc page is rather huge, and you could buy the game three times over if you wanted everything on that page. But, you say, I can mix and match what I want and that is cool. Sure it is, but shouldn't some of that stuff been in the game at launch to begin with? And that my friends is the rift between the generation of gamers.

The older gamers are used to, and expect a game to come to them whole and complete, they expect their add ons to be complete expansions. They expect more from a game company than recycled maps, exploding corpses, waves appearing out of thin air, and a lot of bugs. We were there when some of this stuff was first seen in gaming, we saw it die to rag doll physics and good programming that thinks out how to put a wave room into a game by adding an upper floor or windows that the enemies can come from. We lived through the days before the internet when games had to come out complete and relatively bug free, because if they didn't you had to mail it to the company or take it back for the store to exchange for you.

On the forums over at Bware I have heard every type of praise for how simplistic DA 2 became, why did I hear this praise I wondered. Then I started asking why, and what I got was rather shocking. A whole lot of people who wanted the rpg genre to become a mindless kill fest. That’s right, people are wanting games that make them into vegetables, not games with depth or plot that make you think. They want all their games to be CoD frag maps, that they learn by heart and enjoy like a twelve year old as people explode like lego men on the newest lego game. You can say, Raggy dude you seem a little upset by this why don't you calm down.

Well I am upset, I'm upset because the developers need to remember that the gaming industry got big through diversity. While Hollywood was recycling the same story over and over games were trying to become new a fresh all the time. It is why we have the fps, the rpg, the jrpg, the 3rdps, strategy games, simulators, sports games, comedy games, and puzzle games. Now can you imagine if every game tried to be like an fps? Some of us will, most of us will not, and that is because we all have different tastes. I really shouldn't press the F2P B2P games over this, but they have profected the consol DLC model and brought it out into a new genre.

Eventually all gaming will become like that scene in red vs blue, when tucker is getting sarge to build blue team two new robot bodies and he tries to rip them off by making everything an optional extra. The only way I see to break this trend is to stop buying games that follow this," we will make them pay for crap that shoulda been in it model." Which in this day and age will not happen. So instead we will see a slump in games for pc gamers and old school Arpg fans, that will make a lot of people lose intrest in gameing until one indie company makes stuff for them again and cashes in big time.

Fine since Metacritic is so awesome

    Homefront Critic reviews:

    21 positive

    28 mixed

    1 negative

    Homefront User reviews:

    47 positive

    14 mixed

    23 negative

Oh yeah I can clearly see how bad this game IS.

Interesting. I thought DA2 was better written than Origins. I guess a lot of people prefer a cliche fantasy story over a political driven one. Personally I enjoyed DA2's plots over Origins.

Exactly, i was expecting more from Bioware in terms of crafting and some other gameplay features, but it was a fun, relaxing and interesting experience after all.

When WoW goes F2P and a Bioware game flops, I suspect the end will be neigh. That flop may just be that Star Wars MMO they're working on.

Blizzard will take WoW f2p only so their subscribers can sub to their new game AND still keep making money off of WoW.

In Biowares case Dragon age 2 seems a rather likely flop, doesn't it.

Blizzard are of course considering making it F2P or B2P. My guess is that they wait and see how GW2 is doing, if it is too well they might follow. Or that they want to change the model when Titan comes out so they wont will compete with themselves.
