anyone agree? from videos i've seen this game looks pretty amazing in many ways, apart from the standard boring wow combat: press tab to autolock press 123.

anyone else agree, or know if its different in anyway?

Yeah, I have to agree with your statement.

From looking around aaportal.net and youtube, everything looks great except the melee combat. When I see it on youtube, I literally start to fall asleep. The ship battles look cool though.

We will see how it goes. It's good to see newer games breaking the traditional "Theme Park" mold and trying new and innovative things.

How can you tell this? I've not seen one video that suggests ArcheAge will be this way.

There is a general fear that all games will end up this way, what with the current trend, but I like to put that aside and hope for the best.

I will say that even if this does end up the case, then it could never be as bad as Rift as long as the abilities are interesting and the content is interesting. To be perfectly blunt I've never thought that MMOs weren't about spamming abilities over and over, because they really are. Even EQ is, but the game was open, ever changing and challenging. That makes the difference.

Maybe it is just wrong to expect seriously new, engaging and outright innovative content from MMO combat. MMOs are about abilities. It is the scope of those abilities that wins the day.

I'll finish by saying that, for me, if they just added non-combat abilities such as shrink, levitate and run speed, then the game would be all the more interesting for it. I think that is a big part of what these modern titles are missing. I was in Sol A (EQ) the other night with an ogre tank who couldn't pull because he needed shrinking. It added a whole new depth to the game.

All hail the Pixel, for it is glorious Orange!

Hmmm yeah, actually we can't be sure until we play it but here is what the reviewer from AAportal.net reported:

The target combat system looks very interesting in ArcheAge. Fighting in Archeage is very exciting. Even now, the game has a wide variety of tactical opportunities. For example you can raise a player in a floating bubble to help him jump up on a tall object, heal yourself, cast on him a long spell meanwhile, run away from him. Or you conjure a stone hand to hold the enemy on one place until you cast another fireball. You can also do it the old way, rush at your enemy, knock him off his feet, throw him up in the air with a mighty blow and slice him open with a finishing blow (that’s not a hack’n’slash combo, just skills used at the right time). Characters and abilities are animated very realistically in a beautiful way. The way characters fall is always different. Depending on how the body fell down, it rolls down the slope if it died on the mountainside or if it was knocked down off the cliff. You can feel the power and the slaughtering effect of the abilities in ArcheAge, you won’t envy the person hit by a fireball.). You can learn a large variety of skills from a Skill Trainer by using your Skill Points. There won’t be enough points to learn all the skills, so this opens a door to the uniqueness of your character.

So,It is true that most MMORPGs have the old, boring combat system(tab target, random rush buttons) but we can expect a more drastical and a more interesting combat system from ArcheAge.

Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:

Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom  server)
