Can Rift be played casually?

Man1acMan1ac Member Posts: 1,428

So I bought rift to reignite my love for MMOS and I'm kinda getting bored waiting for GW2. My first impressions were pretty good, I like the graphics, combat and the game seems to be fairly well polished. The skills system looks especially good since it allows a lot of flexibility for future builds, but here comes the however.

However, I found it quite difficult to get into the game. At first it was nice and simple, do this do that, gain some xp and gold, and move on. I didn't like how the crafting system is introduced, I'm a level 12 rogue right now. The Rifts idea is brilliant, probably why the named the game Rift. I mean don't get me wrong, in the old days I'd be playing the game hours on end doing whatever it takes to progress. Right now whenever Iog into the game I'm kinda lost, there are shit loads of quests to do and I don't really know what to do lol.

I know the game's just out and by the looks of it, it has a great future. Plus there will be loads of online guides but right now I think personally I don't have enough drive to play the game. Also, since I have a laptop, The GPUs in these things need a very well developed game engines to run smoothly. FFXIV didn't work and even with screwing with loads with the video settings I'm getting an annoying amount of texture pop-ins. Games like Mafia 2 and Dragon Age 2 run fine.

So all in all, since I'm not really a hardcore gamer atm, I'm gonna hold onto this one, maybe subscribe a month sometime in the future and check it out.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

I understand completely where you're at. I also found myself uninspired for quite awhile waiting for GW2 then Rift came out. I really enjoy the game but I also find that I'll log in and after about an hour I'm done. I think it's going to be my 'go to' game until GW2 comes out but until then, I've gone from a hardcore gamer to a very casual one. I like that I can solo the game regardless of what class or combo I choose and also love the Rift system but it only keeps my attention for a short while before I'm like 'meh'

You're not alone trust me. There are many gamers out there like us who have just become uninspired with what's out there, waiting for the breath of fresh air that we need. Until GW2 comes out, just enjoy the game when you feel like logging in. I've actually been spending more time at the gym and with friends than I ever have so they're not complaining haha!

I think as far as " can this game be played casual? " i cant think of a game more casual friendly than this friend. you can just wander around and kill mobes if you like...theres not even a con system as every mob has it's level written on its tab! Theres not much that cant be solo'ed. Even the rifts can be solo'ed as they scale to numbers.

I have ran into many rifts solo recently and as long as you pull smart, they can be solo'ed :)

The crafting is so simple thats a little dissapointing for soemone like me too.

Just play the game without thinking about it too much and you will be fine :)

Rifts biggest problem is the beginning, it can feel overwhelming making a soul choice and the starter areas are ridiculously packed with mobs, I don't think it really comes in to its own until you get to around lvl 15 by which time you should have got used to the soul system and have unlocked all your souls. By 20 your off out in to much wider zones with less mob density then it becomes much easier to travel and quest. The crafting suffers from the same problem, it's only when you've progressed some and completed a few work orders that the more useful recipes become available.

Hang in there until you've leveled up some more, it becomes more casual too, you'll be used to the soul system and have wider zones to quest in.

This is my experience too except I like the simple crafting system as its been more of a side note than anything for me in the past.   This game is perfect for the casual player as leveling is fast and rifts and crafting do not take a lot of time to do.  I can hop in for an hour or two, gain a level, do a couple warfronts, close a couple rifts, and log out feeling like I accomplished something because...oh yeah...I did.  In fact I am more worried that the game will suffer after the first month because it is too "casual."  I hope it gets harder so people stay because it really is a fun game.

There is apparently a lot to do at 50 if you want to run dungeons and collect gear. This is from a friend who's at 50 and working their way through the tiered expert dungeons. I don't know about the crafting or other stuff at 50, but the staple of running dungeons seems to be there.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Well, it all depends on the player i suppose, Rift to me is a game i enjoy and i can keep coming back to, but to someone different, it is not.

I actually think Rift HAS to be played casually to have any long term retention on a player.

All its elements are great for casual/solo play. Public groups. Just jump in and cooperate, no need to spam a LFG channel for ages.

The only negative is the lack of dungeon finder (for now). But yeah, a casual player looking for a game may find some good fun in Rift.

Yes it can be played casually. And I wouldnt worry about the lack of a dungeon finder. Honestly, I find dungeon groups (1-2 min) much faster in game that it took to queue on the dungeon finder in WoW. A year from now it might be a different story for low level dungeons.. but its not a year from now.

I play casually.  I go on for a day maybe and hour or two.. don't play for a couple days... then come back and spend an entire day on it.  Sometimes I craft, sometimes I quest, sometimes I do Rifts.  Lately I've been exploring.  Doesn't help that I have 9 lowbies that I find equally appealing for their own reasons.  So I toggle between them and head different directions and find new stuff.  And heaven help me but finding those artifact collectibles will be the death of me.... there's just SOOOOOOO many.

yes it can be played casually. in fact i think most people play casually since the majority of the population still has not even hit 40 yet. I like to call myself sorta casual since i am not sitting at home playing the game all day long, have a job i go to every day and i am lvl 48 right now. still have a ton of fun but then again its only week 2- doing rifts, invasions, pvp, questing, dungeons.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

Sure can, 2 days a week for me because if I made time to play everyday I would be at level 50 already.

Casual isn't just about the amount of time you play.  It's also the type of content you like and how you go about playing the game.  As a casual, I do not like nor participate in raids or raid rifts or raid invasion events.  I have yet to do a dungeon as they seem far too much effort for the reward and force you to group.  So that pretty much leaves questing as my mainstay of content in Rift with some crafting on the side and the occassional solo / single group rift. Oh yeah, hunting for artifacts can be a nice diversion sometimes too.

Yes, you can play casually in this game, but you won't have access to a lot of the more rewarding content unless you play more hardcore and or are willing to invest larger chunks of time.

  • eowetheoweth Member Posts: 273

The main problem is if you're trying to play with people who don't "play casually". If you intend to solo the whole time, you might be OK, but if you intend to "play casually" with others forget it. They'll quickly level past you and you'll be stuck soloing the same old quests everyone has already done.

If you're asking "is Rift a pretty place to idle away the hours" then yes it is. If you're asking "can I be competitive playing casually" then no, you can't. MANY of these quests, even at mid levels, are group content, so hope you meet people raising alts whenever you want to do something more than a Kill10 quest.
