I wouldn't say 'destroyed' as Wintergrasp/Tol Borad is a huge success in WoW.
WG actually had to become a 'BG like' since it was way too popular.
World PVP was rejected by the playerbase back in BC days when no one did the world PVP objectives.
Actually, world PvP crashed the WoW servers on a regular basis. WoW couldn't handle the entire population of the server in one city at the same time. People didn't reject world PvP so much as they couldn't engage in world PvP at the scale they wanted. Battlegrounds were the alternative that worked.
I still remember pre-battlegrounds WoW city raids. Those fights were so epic. It was just mindless zerging but it was fun. However, servers couldn't take it and they went down for hours on end. I guess that was the reason they introduced battlegrounds.
I have also participated in several Orgrimmar raids in TBC and one real epic fight in Wotlk. I still remember all the portals around and hordes pouring in from wherever their portal chamber was However, we did manage to hold the Valley of Honour(?) where there is only 1 tunnel and horde couldn't get through for quite some time without getting AOE spammed It was fun cause this time the servers did manage to stay up and you didn't have dishonourable kills

Well, world PvP was dead long before TBC. Actually it was battlegrounds which killed world PvP. Before battlegrounds there were epic 100-300 vs 100-300 city raids which crashed the servers all the time. But people loved these so they kept doing it and the servers kept crashing. So blizzard introduced battlegrounds and made all the PvP goodies available through bgs and as a result city raids stopped. They simply disappeared never to come back, their name forgotten and barely discernible in the whispers of the past
World pvp gave you benefits, specifically area benefits (+10% attack aura) or access to vendors (Halaa) or Graveyards (Zangamarsh) in BC.
However, no one did them.
Fastest gain is through BGs but the actual mechanics of world pvp hasn't changed since launch.
If people aren't doing them now it means they found something else they want to do (either for the reward or the 'fun' value).
Which suggests world pvp wasn't that 'fun' to begin with.
The playerbase forced Blizzard's hand on the 'pvp' mechanics by their participation (or lack thereof) and I can't blame a company giving their players what they want.

Battlegrounds: Instanced 5v5 or so objective based PvP, e.g., Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Take the Hill, etc.
WHY DO PEOPLE ENJOY THIS?
#1. In BGs, there is NO element of surprise. Eveyrone is buffed up and expecting combat.
#2. In BGs, tactics are learned within a month. The scenario becomes a rinse/repeat cycle.
#3. In BGs, there are a limited number of maps. Everyone quickly learns every blade of grass, every hill, every tree, every typical hiding spot.
#4. In BGs, everything is redundant. Been there, done that... a thousand times.
Am I simply asking for World PvP? No. I'm asking for some creation depth - something outside the box. Battlegrounds/Arenas are so typical - so boring. It's seriously time for something new.
1.That's called balanced pvp .And in auto-attck combat systems in game slike wow-style 10vs 10 or 20 vs is a must.
2.Very few bg's has that. Most bg's evry premaade group usually try different tactics/strategies and there is where the beauty exists. concerning their setup(clases etc)
3.That 's not necessay bad (after playing 6 years arathi basin i still like it) but could use variety.
4.Check my answer about tactics /strategues in 2.
On your overall notice i agree with u except bg's arenas boring statement. Someone could easilly notice that ganging 9 guys from a guild 3 poor fellas in the wild over and over can be more boring and above all UNFAIR. Bg's arenas is all about balance dpvp where true skill and good timing matters. Although i personally like open world pvp aka Daoc or other older mmorpgs shadowbane etc.

Now thats a wow fanboy heh... Seriously now evryone played wg just for the gear.Everyone plays tol barad just for rep/gear .There are ofc very few exceptions ,aparently u r one but truth is both sucked big time unless ofc ppl's taste is ...that deep
Why exactly do you think he's a wow fanboy Because he likes WG? Dismissing other people's preferences is stupid. You don't like WG type of PvP that does not mean others don't. And certainly your choice of PvP is not any "deeper" than his.

erm im sorry to ruin that to u,and i know it may sounds maybe offensive but yeah,if someone states that he liked wg or tb yeha dude,he has a serious problem with taste.
Let me give u an example. There are ppl that actually like console /korean like rpg's . But thats just cause thes eppl didnt had the chance to play older pc rpg's that were masterpieces and excelling in creation fantasy and gameplay. Those ppl since they havent tasted what rpg is all about they think that after playing final fantasy they know what rpg game are all about. Hope to enlighted u.

Your example is right and off at the same time. The first MMO that hooks people and they play it for an extended period of time is usually the one that shapes their taste for the following ones.
That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with anime type RPGs. You don't need to pigeon hole yourself into a specific subsection of RPGs and consider them "quality". These RPGs are popular for a reason, reason being that people like them. You're not one of them, which is perfectly fine. That doesn't make them inferior, just not what you personally don't enjoy.
on one hand, we don't like battlegrounds/battlefield/etc because the rules are already set down. It's hard to innovate and be creative in that kind of setting, and sooner or later you'll have to stick to a tried-and-tested formula to win it. That's, I think, the main gripe with that kind of PvP.
On the other hand, we have open pvp. It's no rules no bars (save for some *restrictions that vary between game to game), so you basically take everything in hand and craft up your own masterpiece. Manipulate the terrain, use psychological warfare, bring in your guildmates to hunt those asshats down and make them cry.
I think that the battlegrounds are fun for me, because I don't frequent it but not productive as far as innovating in the PvP grounds go. Open PvP, however, does much better in this case - you leave it to the players and they'll create your bloodbath for you. True PvP, battlefield is not. A nicely designed fun side-game that shouldn't really be branded PvP? Yes.

I would not say destroy, but rather transform. I do love open world pvp and i played quite a few sandbox mmo's. But i realy don't have always time to engage in open world pvp. Battlegrounds enable me to get in a fight with someone quickly, and slaughter is just a queue time away.

Well the issue is not that BG PvP has ruined world PvP it is more that world PvP is garbage in most games. It lacks any serious objectives and 50% of the time is spent either running to a fight or from a fight. The other 40% is gank PvP, meaning your opponent or you have 10 times the numbers than the other side.
Only about 10% of the time spent world PvP is actually fun and exciting where as in BG I find most PvP to be fun and somewhat exciting. Exception is when you have premades against pick up groups (pugs).
I wouldn't say 'destroyed' as Wintergrasp/Tol Borad is a huge success in WoW.

Wow....this is some mind boggling arrogance right here. Of course you would know why 'everyone' played right?
I mean you would of course asked every single 12 million subscribers to know exactly why people played WG right? /sarcasm
Does it really matter why a certain facet of the game was popular? WoW's PVP is a prime example of how the playerbase changed what features to change/add in the expansions through participation.
I can't blame Blizzard, if players aren't playing XYZ part of your game, one should look at why and cut it out or change it.

I actually like this part, it is more fun that just backstabbing people who are mineing.
But battlegrounds generally suck. Small maps you learn fast with more or the less same people using the same tactics.
I think GW2s "the Mist" that is a massive area with loads of stuff including fotresses, mines and other stuff in you get bonus to hold is the right way to go and hope it will replace battlegrounds in future themeparks.
Sure, full PvP servers have some points as well, but adding battlegrounds to them is rather pointless so I am talking about PvE servers here.
I blame BGs on the way games are made these days. There is so much CC in all these stupid theme park MMOs now that real PVP is gone. ( yes i blame the CC let me explain )
in open world pvp you should be able to fight and survive or even win against multiple people IF your skilled enough. well CC takes that away because when you fight multiple people all they do is push a button and put you in pinata mode till your dead.
So now we have BGs and other so called " Fair " pvp fights were the teams are even and everybody is happy go lucky battleing it out.
There is no real thrill of open world PVP anymore in games, i remember back in Asherons Call man you would be on your toes all day waiting to get jumped, but you know what? if you did get jumped you could escape or have a chance to fight it out because that game took skill to pvp, it wasnt just some stupid gear based button masher like WoW and all these other stupid wow clones.

Flying mounts killed world PvP in WoW, not BGs. In WAR doing RvR yielded inferior rewards to BG grind plus it lagged like crazy. At least that was the case during the launch days. People are lemmings and they need to be guided with bread crumbs. If one path offers less bread crumbs than the other then why follow that particular path?

You could say the same about the MMORPG genre as a whole. No more creativity, no more innovation, no more immersion, no more...fun.
i can agree with you there, i have almost given up hope for the mmo genre. im hoping tera/tor/gw2/blade and soul can bring a new spark to the mmo genre since Rift was such a bland mmo clone its so boring even after playing it only for a few weeks.

Yeah I'd agree with that take on things.
Honestly I think the Enemy Territory / Quake Wars guys would make some great battlegrounds, with fun objective-based gameplay (with plenty of optional side objectives that gain your side advantages.)

Battlegrounds are neccesary for any MMO with levels of any kind. People need a place to get the bloodlust out or they just keep fighting down the tiers until they get somewhere they can kill everybody. You want to get rid of BG's? Get rid of levels first OR make it impossible for players to fight in places that are too low level.
WildStar is like if Ratchet and Clank had a baby with Beyond Good & Evil and that baby was raised by World of Warcraft and Spore and babysat on the weekends by the aliens from Space Jam. It's an ugly bastard worth a few laughs but not much else.

I like fair pvp. When I mean fair, I mean both players want to pvp.
Not some pvp person ganking a pve person that dont' want pvp.
Daoc or warhammer is fine to me. I just dont' like people fighting me when I'm mining etc. Since I dotn' want to fight.
