Vanguard = Best Class Based Game Out There

So, I've been playing Vanguard and it's definitely my favourite class based game ever but...

Why the hell is it so unsupported? :( It's fucking ridiculous. SOE are happy to shovel loads of shit towards EQ1, but Vanguard gets nothing?

i completely agree. I really hope VG gets back on its feet because I prefer VG over any other "in depth" mmo out there such as EQ2

I'm on a Vanguard trial right now. I've seen at least one or two other people in the newbie area all four times I logged in. I will sub if I can get the client to run okay. Seems to start lagging badly after about 40 minutes or so.

Really jimmac? worth giving a try?

Ex. myth of soma, legend of mir, mu online and eudemons online player.

Current game : Runescape (until pc build is complete)

The game runs fine, just use the VGClient.ini Tweaking guide on the forums, worked for me and all my friends, runs smooth with high settings.

I've returned to Vanguard several times, because I really miss the big world and the free feeling to it. Maybe some company will create something similiar to Vanguard someday, I hope so.

I like Vanguard, but I think EQ2 is better at least if your on a pay to play as I can not speak about the free to play version as I have never played it. You did hit on one thing I totaly argree with Vanguard has very cool and fun classes.

This is one of my favorite games of all time but as you said it's unsupported and because of such is largely vacant if you try starting in any area other than the starte island.

    It's a real shame.

This game has it all, in depth crafting, a diplomacy system, comepletely uninstanced play, massive open dungeons scattered across the world, and the largest MMO world to explore.

    Just sad :(.

Which is why I am playing Rift.

Everything I said was true, yes. As whether it's worth giving a try, I haven't play enough to give a solid review. I think almost any MMO is worth a try though, you know. I've tried just about every other one.

You should know what you're getting into though: no development on the horizon, and probably no development ever. If you sub, the game you sub to will stay the same the entire time you play it. No expansions or support. Also the population is pretty thin, so finding a good group of people to hang with I think will be crucial early on.

If it's good enough despite those two things, I'd say go for it.

     Thanks I'll try it.

As to the comment about EQ2...I got two characters to max level on EQ2, and found the zones to be just so underwhelming. Mobs bunched up everywhere. Small zones. Dungeons were pretty good, but the world as a whole felt so condensed I just couldn't enjoy it. What made me give up on the game though was the end game community. I know it's hard in any game to find a good guild to play with, but sheesh, the end game community on the server I was on was just terrible.

I totally agree.  I love the choice of classes.  With RIFT, it's great, but I rather enjoy being attached to a specific class.  Maybe I'll give VG another try this week.  But today... I'll be running a lowbie in DAoC!

I think lots of people would play Vanguard if it was at all supported. =/

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

I hate skillbased games with a passion, so Vanguard is the best MMO I know.

I dont feel much of an urge to keep playing it, though. Reportedly the european server Halgar is practically dead. And I would get very bad ping to the american server. Unfortunately Vanguard has nothing to compensate for bad ping, so I'll pass.

I cannot understand how a company that has made so many MMOs can still be so clueless on how to run one. Vanguard looks awesome. I did a trial a while back when I was into SWG. The game is in hibernation though. I don't get why you would aquire an asset with so much potential and just leave it, forgotten, on a server somewhere. This is the fate of all games run by SOE. Start off great...then slide into oblivion.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

I think it would be supported if a lot of people played it!

Ah, the horrible catch 22. :(

... well, okay, I might be wrong about that, since we're talking about SOE, but that's how it would work with a NORMAL MMO company, anyway.

I'm one that would play the game if it were supported.

As for writing to the President (Smed), I see him like the warden of some jail with an Inmate (Vanguard) who has friends and family sending letters of support, only to be burned by a cackling EQ2 loving man.

Here's what that same guy said when they aquired the game ....

    "Hello Everyone,

Today I would like to formally announce that SOE has acquired the assets of Sigil Games Online, including Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. As a part of this acquisition, we are bringing on approx 50 people from Sigil in order to insure that Vanguard continues to grow. SOE is dedicated to making sure that Vanguard is well taken care of and that we provide the same level of service we do for our other titles. In the near future we will come out with a publishing plan that will largely be driven by the strong player community that Vanguard has already built up. We plan on supporting Vanguard for many years to come, and you can expect many content updates as part of your subscription. Down the line we will of course be coming out with new expansion packs, but right now the focus is on making sure Vanguard is running the way it should be.

We are also officially opening up forums. In the past, our deal with Sigil didn't allow for this, but as with our other games we fill this is an important part of communicating with the playerbase. You can expect a strong presence from our community team as well as the development team members. While we realize that Sigil had said they wouldn't open up general forums, at SOE we fill this hampers our efforts to communicate effectively with the players. We will continue to support the fansites in a big way, and will be contacting many of them directly to discuss what this change means. By no means do we want to lose the strong fansite support by making this change, but we do think it's important to have a forum for players to communicate directly with SOE.

A few other items I wanted to mention

    1. Brad McQuaid will be consultant to SOE as a creative advisor for Vanguard. Dave Gilbertson will be the person directly responsible for the day-to-day management of both the Sigil Carlsbad office as well as Vanguard.

    2. We do not plan on making any major changes to Vanguard. Any changes are going to come from the team itself. We aren't mandating any big changes to the game. We've learned a thing or two with our experiences with the NGE and don't plan on repeating mistakes from the past and not listening to the players.

    3. We do plan on spending a lot of time cleaning up legacy issues with Vanguard and making sure the game's performance improves.

By way of comparison, this team is approx. the same size as the EQ2 team and I feel like that team has done an amazing job improving EQ2 since it's launch. We intend to do the same thing for Vanguard and it is our hope that the players feel like we're doing right by them.

X2... Vanguard WAS one of the best game on the market until SOE took it over. Now it just a skeleton in the grave waiting to eb ressurected.

Whow, you still have hope for Vanguard ?

Its a bit hard for me to still do that. I waited 2 years while playing and another 1.5 years without playing. But nothing ever happened.

I think I am going to be revisiting Vanguard. It's been ages so...what servers are left and where should I go?

I'll be honest, I cannot stomach the graphics, never could. But I'm going to press on because I really need more depth right now and I know Vanguard has that.
  • JimmacJimmac Member UncommonPosts: 1,660

There is only one North American server. I think it's called Telon. I'm going to sub to the game as well, although for me it's going to be my first time. As a vet of just about every major MMO there is except the crappiest biggest one I don't want to name, I'm pretty excited.

Every night I've logged in this week there have been other people on in the newbie area. Granted it's only been between 4-9 or so people each time, it's still a decent sign in my opinion. If I can just find a good guild I think I will be fine. I'd advise other people to do the same.

Also, I had my "LFG" flag up the entire time but no one ever asked me to group. Maybe that tool isn't widely used by the community. I'd recommend asking for a group in the /region channel in addition to using the LFG flag.

Vanguard has always had a spot in my heart as the spiritual successor to EQ1. It really is a polished game; it just got to that state too late in the release lifecycle. If SoE had made it F2P 2-3 years ago, it would likely be thriving right now far beyond the success of DDO and potentially LotRO as well.

Or even charged £4-5 per month then this game may have done better. Still they probably wont close it as they have it as part of the station access, but you can only play 1 game at a time and its still cheaper to pay for 1 and play that for a month and get much more done than pay for a month and have a choice of several games to play and get very little done if you switch through.
