A disillusioned MMOer LFG

Hey all!

Like the title says, first let me explain where I am coming from. I started out in the MMO genre with WOW and played it rigorously for 6 years. Really I am amazed that i managed to keep going that long looking back now, I was badly addicted i suppose. It was WOTLK which finally killed my attachment to WOW, When I cancelled my wow subscription it was only for something much better and much worse. I had tried out Eve before and had deleted it in a fit of rage of yet another frig lost to a mission. When I tried it a second time i was amazed at how much more massive that game is compared to wow and wondered how Id ever been content with wow and its obvious shortcommings. Player driven worlds really is the only massive.

Eve though, is a spreadsheet game if ever there was one and that has never really appealed to me. Also one of the things that really irked me was the lack of direct control, how awesome would eve not be if it had been designed more as a wasd game for fast paced dogfights to the death. I still play it a bit but really i find that i enjoy more reading the news from New eden rather actually play in it.

I then had a brief encounter with perpetuum which had to end, I think they have a solid design idea, but I was quickly turned of by that games complete lack of depth. I tried RIFT but quickly realized that it was all stuff Id seen before and come to dispise. I play WoT from time to time but i kinda miss the persistent world.

In short the gameplay I am looking for in an MMO: Player driven world with all that entails(economy, territorial warfare etc), reasonably fast paced combat, PVP and a proper risk-reward relationship. Death has to mean something. I like both Sci fi and fantasy settings. I really dont have any thought on any particular leveling system, play based or time based, its all fine by me.

I hope you can help me guys. I need a good fix damnit! :D

Honestly I wish I had a game like that too...

Darkfall or UO are the only things that come to mind that are similar

Fallen Earth maybe? I heard they improved the combat and it's got a free trial. I havn't played it since it first came out so I can't say if it is what you are looking for.

I couldn't agree with you more about Eve, it's a fantastic game but the combat really turned me off as well and it takes quite an investment of time to build yourself up (like all MMO's I suppose).

I love Fallen Earth's setting as I'm a huge fan of the post apoc style.   I agree about EvE's combat, it really killed it for me, I wish that they made a game that was a cross between EvE's complexity's and Wing Comander / TIE Fighter combat.

Though I'm more of a Fantasy lover myself, hence the UO or Darkfall suggestions heh.

I've never played this game but I hear it has some good points and it's free so I guess it's worth a "look see".

All of the following are sandbox with robust crafting and/or skill/trade systems:

Ryzom is now free to play and it's a sandbox game. It came out the same year as WoW. The population may be really low though, but maybe it is increasing since it is f2p now? Dunno, but I am dloading it now to check it out to see.

Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted is fun, but the population is very low and most of the players are dragons. It has amazing crafting--and that is what most of the playerbase does, instead of adventuring. That being said, it is somewhat of a sandbox as well because you can own plots of land and most items are crafted. Oh, and unparalleled freedom to multilclass.

LinkRealms is a sandbox that allows you to create your own realm for other players to explore. It is free if you do not want to own your own realm and you will have to make friends with people that subscribe so they can give you access to farm, etc on their land. It plays like Ultima Online with superior animations. The community is uber tight knit at the moment.

Runescape. It is free, the environment is highly interactive, and it has a high playerbase. I guess some would be turned off by the controls or perceive the game as "boring". But there is plenty to do in Runescape. As far as I am aware, there is no way to create your own content nor is there any player housing though.

Tibia. Player housing, FFA PvP servers, crafting, 2.5d graphics, looks like UO.

i played runescape for a long while...

there is player housing....but it's like a skill,as all skills...that take literally months to train out.

if you are killed you drop your items on the ground...have couple minutes to get to your grave(the place where they felt) or they are lost 4 ever.(and items are HAAAAAARD and expensive to get).

    Intensive grind.

    Boring skilling.

    Pvp=kill someone,loot them fully.

    boring combat.
