I really like the look of this game, have registered and am 'Templar'

I am an Abstract sort of Creature
Who Dislikes any sort of Restraint
If you try to pigeonhole me
    I Will Break Free!

Balance in reality is ridiculous, it is up to the player to get his/her balance right, instead of Whining in games like this, when someone has done the ground work and found a better formula!

SWG was not a failure bcs the classless system but bcs the system itself had some flaws.
Imagine that an mob has a red, a blue and a green healthbar.
You win the fight if one of this bars is down to zero.
Now you have chars in your group that either can fight only the red or only the blue or only the green bar.
Result is that you do not have a good group play but a mob with thrice the hp than it should have.
In short that was the trouble with this game back in that days.
Also yes, some things were ridiculous weak compared to others (Combat-Droids vs Animals), had no function (Worker-Droids) and at all the game was very unfinished.
But the skill system itself was very good.

And ultimate balance is only achieved if everyone is absolute similar to every other one.
That is indeed a very boring gameplay, even if the classes may have different names.
Let the poeple be creative and find out good combinations of skills and how they can make gameplay easier, even "exploit" it - its part of the fun!

"Balance" means different things to different people. To me it doesn't mean "everyone is equaly powered as everyone else at everything." That's just plain boring.

To me it means that no one character build can do EVERYTHING as good or better then every other build. Or that no one character build is best at dealing with 99% of the challenges that exist in the game. As long as the game presents a WIDE VARIETY of challenges/situations and each build has it's strengths and weaknesses in those....that's plenty enough balance for me.

Yes, there will be builds that have combo's that don't particularly work well together....and there will be builds that are better put together then others. That's part of the "game" part of building a character. Yes there will be sites that publish thier particular FOTM type builds...and people that insist on following them. That's perfectly fine too...I'm not worried about that very much.

The REAL problem some games in the past had were that 99% of the type of challenges in the game were pretty much the SAME and could be approached the exact same way to defeat them. That's why FOTM stuff seemed to become "unbalanced" in many games.

Bottom line, if a game introduces a good VARIETY of content/challenges and different tactics/approaches are better or worse for facing diffrent situations....and they allow for a good enough difficulty range so that even non-optimal characters can do content they can earn exp from.... then FOTM pretty much becomes a non-issue (IMO).

If I have understood this system correctly, everyone has access to all skills and can max out every skill they want to, but can only use 7+7 at the same time. As I see this, I can decide which role I want to play and max out the FotM for when these are needed of me. However, I can also play my own skill-sets and just switch to the FotM-set when needed to.

If the skill system is set up with multiple layers/tiers of the same skill, or make certain skills dependent upon other skills to be viable, then more FotM-sets will appear.

Regardless, I am going to give this one a try despite AoC. I just hope FC has learned from their previous launch problems.
