Combat is just terrible

GrailerGrailer Member UncommonPosts: 893

I can't believe no one has improved combat in these sort of games yet. Conan tried to deviate but the enemy AI is as bad as pacman's ghosts.

I noticed that I just spam 3 - 4 attacks over and over so I put them onto 1 key macro .

Now I have 4 macros for my cleric / shaman

1-  range spell

2- attack

3- heal

4- AoE attack

Most of the time i just keep hammering the 2 button over and over like a mindless goon and sometimes press 3 when my health drops slightly.

The enemy AI is totally boring as there is really only 2 types of attacks  ranged and melee but to kill each you still hammer 2 key but the difference is for ranged mobs you don't use 1 key to pull them close.

The problem is not the game. You just witnessed the art of diverse templates kicking your arse. Just let the rage drift away and fight another day. The higher the rank, the more complicated it will get. Your health was probably dropping because you didn't stay with your group and your opponent was more tactical. Trust me, i felt the same. I even found my self saying "f#k this". However, why blame the game? I'm the one that needs to adjust.

A game with non-cookie cutter professions comes around, and people start to rage. Jeez

i dont really get this post it seems to me the OP is saying the games combat is too easy ?  Not to hard.

Seems to me he is complaining its a button masher where he just does the same thing to win (and barely get any damage to boot) so sorry i not sure i understand the  whole "diverse templates kicking your arse" ?

OP its one small reason why i didnt buy the game after doing the betas amongst other things

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Rift is about as cookie-cutter as it gets for classes and yeah the combat is a step back from WoW and EQ2 type games and that is saying a lot because those were already too dumbed down.

Yes combat is rather easy and requires no true tactical skill.

I didnt do the beta ,  I got the game because I heard it was very polished and worth playing. And it is very polished but at level 27 Im starting realise my finger is very sore from pushing 1 button over and over  as fast as I can spam it  :(

your complaint is not unique to Rift. 99% of all MMOs combat is the same. So, why single out and complain about Rifts combat?  It seems like you are just trying to stir up dissent

Re your earlier point about macro'ing abilities (before you deleted it), you would just use keyboard macro's surely, ala G15 or G510, yes? Always found that to defeat the purpose but whatever.

Rift is only cookie cutter if you allow it to be,otherwise its far from it.

Maybe they make AI really basic to save on processing power

Best Combat gameplay I have seen:

    1st DDO

    2nd AoC

    3rd The rest

I never said anything about macros... I'm guessing you quoted the wrong person?

Rift is only cookie cutter if you allow it to be,otherwise its far from it.

I was really more talking about what each character is capable of doing. The classes themselves are about as generic and cookie-cutter as you could come up with in an MMO. Even WoW had more diversity in their classes even though WOW talent trees are more 'cookie cutter' than Rifts are. I guess it just depends on what you are talking about.

I'd put DCUO in there too alongside GW1.

    This is not a game.

    ?

Please explain how it's a step back from WoW. I'm not saying it's a step forward, but a step back?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

rift is by all means a raid or pvp game.
if you care about exciting leveling, well ... mmo's arent for you. at least i havent found 'the great' leveling experience yet.

If you go into pvp smashing your beloved button (which i dont understand at all, haveing gcd and such ...) you'll get face rolled like all those other button smashers.
diversity in the small scale is Rifts top feature - there are lots of cc's, counter cc's and de/buffs to get, you can do everything in 10 different ways (yes, its only small differences, enough for me).

Then again: am i waiting for more innovative combat (like AoC's)? - yes, sure!
Did i know what i get, and is it fun (Rift)? - yes, sure.

On crap mobs I will just spam 4-6 buttons, but on the harder mobs I use up to 15 skills, and have certain times I need to use skills in varying orders.

Also the mob AI seems fine, I've had normal mobs silence me, knock me back, blur my vision, stun me, slow me, etc etc etc.

The combat seems more than fine to me, I enjoy it atleast as much as EQ2 or AoC (the combat did not feel ground breaking to me, but to each his own).

Edit: im a cleric as well, and I would suck if I only used 3-4 skills :/

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

4 different macros to do 4 different skills.

    Why?

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

Same here, though I've only been playing MMOs for a few months (started LotRO when it went F2P) and yet I'm already sick of boring static combat that most MMOs seem to follow, to this day. Which is why I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2, which will allow me to have fun whilst I'm in combat, instead of face-rolling my standard combos.

I have a lvl 50 bard and I need over 25 buttons.  I also have a lvl 30 Warden and agian I am using 14 or more keys.  I went out and bought a 17 button mouse to play this game.  I just don't get the one button postings, but then agian I am probably the one killing you.

You just answered your own question there.

Besides, how many people are playing AoC now?...

    I honestly understand op's complain..

Maybe ppl should start demanding more and more combat systems like mount and blade's warband and oblivion's? At leats there player skill counts and u have to watch opponents movements weapon's movements and has great tactical positioning. That's what really missing from today's market of mmorpgs i think.

Im always up to realisitc combat systems but flipjumping every once in a while backwards 15-20 meters dont u think is kinda childish and ridiculous?

Also too much benny hill show running around. I understand moving around but when armoured with weapons on dont u think speed of characters should be slower?

As long as the combat mechanics are fun and in-depth, that's all that matters. I come from the Unreal Tournament generation, so I can appreciate a good dodging mechanic, that's more active than just stacking your points into agility. Not everyone would like the combat in GW2 but at least it provides people with options, when deciding what MMO they want, based on it's combat alone.
