Based upon my tastes, I would have to throw the following four in as the contenders:
-UO
-AC1
-EQ
-AC2 (More sentimental value - I went down with the ship in this one)
UO & AC1 fight for my top spot of best mmorpg (to this day).
The originality and creativity that made up AC1 & AC2, is a rare quality that I have yet to see carried out to the same degree in another MMO (from what I've seen).
Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:
Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom server)
Well, there is no and i think can't be absolutly best MMORPG, because everyone want something different from his game experience. And you can't satisfy all, because every often players want completely opposite things. Like someone want open world PvP and full loot while someone don't want any kind of PvP at all. So asking about "best MMORPG" is basically asking people about their favourite MMORPG.

Although its execution didn't work out very well Warhammer age of reckoning had a great design. It pretty much gave birth to things like achievements (see tome of knowledge), public quests (awesomeness). However the end game pve content was fairly lack luster and the RvR campaign just went too fast, seeing capitol cities daily etc. Did it have its set of unique problems yes, but it was innovative and fun, it just didn' t take the ideas far enough.
It really depends on what you want to base your query off of. If you wanna talk numbers and hype, probably World of Warcraft. If you wanna talk about originality and starting off the genre, probably a game I've never played. If you wanna talk about the first ever hence the greatest to so many hardcores, probably a MUD that I never played lol.
To me it's still in the making (I'm obviously hyped about something here ;D).
It's all a matter of opinion unless you wanna crunch numbers and see the rest, but even then there are going to be a boatload of those who disagree.
IMHO Guild Wars (the entire series) is the best out there right now. I full expect GW2 to replace it.
That is closely followed by LoTRO - even the F2P!
Of course, those are the only two I've played for any length of time, so take what I say with a grain of salt. The fact that I've only played those 2 for any length of time tells ME something anyway! lol
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

I enjoyed Pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies more than any other MMO I've played, although, I never had the chance to play UO or DAOC, and from what I hear, I'd probably really enjoy them.
SWG, other than the bugs, had pretty much everything I could ever want in an MMO. I'm still hoping SWG Emu gets perfected some day in the future. At the rate MMOs are advancing (or should I say regressing), a perfect emulation of SWG pre-nge would probably still be worth playing five years from now.
For me its Everquest 2 , its lore is awesome aswell as the gameplay which i havent seen in any other mmorpg ( and i think the only game with a mature community )
Second in line is Age of Conan. great graphics and great lore aswell. tho its gameplay and content lacks when comparing it with Everquest 2
Looks like few even have a clue how to approach a question such as this one...
Don't just throw out your personal favorite or say "it's all relative." Come up with objective criteria by which you can judge what makes an MMORPG good.
For that, you first answer:
1) What is a fair way to determine what makes something an MMORPG?
2) What makes something an MMORPG?
3) What's a fair way to determine what criteria we should judge the good of MMORPG's by?
4) What makes MMORPG's good?
5) Given these criteria, how do various games measure up?
That is, if you care about finding an answer that people can agree upon.
The best mmo ever made was by the universe itself!! To log in as a new player u need a mum and dad, cant choose ur own name or body features u can only use the hand ur delt and its lasts on average 80 odd years. Full of potential and wonder its still unmatched by any mmo today for realism.....untill someone invents somthing like a .Hack game.

Guild Wars, and if that doesn't count then something I haven't played because most everything out there is not really worthy of praise.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
Cant say if it was the best but my favourite was SWG pre-cu
Ultima Online!
Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom server)
