Yeah most likely. Shadows might bog you down a bit. I'm running a Phenom X4 965 at 3.4 ghz, a 5770, 4 gigs of ram and I'm running it on ultra except for shadows, with absolutely no lag.
Yeah i though shadows will be at low that not a problem
Yeah, you should be able to run it maxed out though. I wasn't expecting to be able to but it runs smooth, even during huge pvp battles, and rifts.
No you won't.
I've got the exact same rig except a GTX 275 instead of the older 280.
And no way in hell.
You can crank everything to max and easily play the 'regular' stuff, but the fun of the game, the large invasions with 30+ characters on screen, the actual 'feature' of this game, is very CPU heavy. And an E8400 is 2007s news.
I tinkered with the settings a lot and it came down to disabling shadows completely and reducing object distance to 30% in mass PvE/PvP. You can leave all that shiny postprocessing crap activated if you like (because that's only piling your GPU), but with object distance and shadows activated it will severly slow down, not to the extent of choppy, but enough to give you a heavy disadvantage in melee combat (12-18 frames).
Not that this is in any form relevant since the game still looks nice enough, just don't be fooled, you won't be able to run it on ultra.
EDIT: Of course this all depends on what you think is 'necessary' fluidity. I myself can't stand the slightest responsiveness delay when I turn camera angles or charge anything.
i run this game on ultra, your specs arent to far off from mine, i think you could
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
6142MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Antec Gaming Phenom
Windows Vista Home Premium
And yes they are. The quad core makes all the difference in the world when it comes to calculation of many moving objects. Large battles need CPU power the old dual core intels don't provide.
i'll presume its not worth the buy with the cpu I got
Woops yeah i overlooked that that it was a quad =/

If the only thing you care about is running the game maxed out, then yeah I guess. The game will still end up looking good, plus it's the gameplay / fun factor you should care about more. But then again Rift isn't everyones cup of tea.
hell F*cking now you can't. The Shadows is a big feauture that makes RIFT a good looking game, but than again the shadows make you FPS drop with 90%. Its shows how bad and unoptimised the engine is since I tried 2 high end PC's (Quadcore 3.2/5850 2gb/4gb ram) and they couldn't max out the game with shadows and antialiasing etc. on.
He said shadows will be on low.
"Yeah i though shadows will be at low that not a problem"
Did I mention that I played Tibia with my rig? *g*
And a bazillion of people are playing WoW which everyone can run on ultrasupermax on mom's 1980s toaster; The bling ends after say 10 hours of gameplay, after that it's either a good game or shiny gfx won't keep you hooked anyways. Just look at AoC, no pretty dismemberment in the world could mask the severe lack of content and innovative gameplay in that game.

Any game featuring mass battles severly slows down when character count goes up. That's a CPU thing and well known, has nothing to do with the engine. LotRO ettenmoors, WAR Tier 4 keeps, if you let everything cast shadows in those battles and push the slider all the way to the right plus soft shadowing etc. the game will kneel.
That's not bad coding, that's mathmatics. Supersized textures (Everquest 2 in 2004), polycount mudholes (Tarantia anyone?), high detail objects 3 miles away, those are signs of a badly optimized engine...
The only 'mistake' here could be that Trion allowed soft shadowing for everything and high detail objects at larger draw distances into the game. They could have known that people start hating because their new 900 bucks machine doesn't do everything on ultrasupermaxquality.

Well I mean looking at a reasonnable state that my point .Thx for everyone that replied so far im starting to get a idea .
In general if im not wrong ,Rift on my pc will not be able to run on max but at a low to med ranged to be playable .
one more thing : i read in the comments if my shadows are off/at the lowest what will be my performance wise in the other option and ingame
Geeez...
If you wanted to buy it to look at the awesome shadows and the supercool godrays then stay away (and from any other fun MMO if you ask me); If you're looking for a solid, fun themepark MMO experience, buy it.
BTW it's not the epitome of pretty anyways, even if on supermax. So all the hassle for nothing because AoC still sits up there grinning (especially now after dreamworld engine released).

EDIT: And you will be able to set everything on max except object draw distance and shadows. YOu can either switch shadows to low res, then you'll need to tune other stuff down (disable shrubbery and turn down lighting quality for example) or you'll have to disable shadows completely, then you can keep everything else up.
thx that what i wanted to hear about what option to twink and stuff
Not a chance - my rig X4 965, 8GB, 6850, etc. (see signature) hits 40-45 fps in ultra depending, dropping into the 20s in a heavy rift. You will do best on low to medium.
