No questing just for XP, I hate those kinds of games. Questing for items/content is fine of course
If you get into a good clan, lineage 2 could be the game for you. You might have to spend a bit soloing in order to get to the higher lvls but there are definitely group areas where people run parties.

Youd rather spend time walking to a quest giver going and killing 10 enemies then running back to the quest giver then getting the next quest then running out to do whatever he asked you to do all by your lonesome self then having fun chatting and killing enemies with other people?
If you quest with other people youll spend a lot of time going 'Ok did you get all the quests? ok good." then "Ok im done are you guys done? ok lets run back" then "Ok did you guys get all the quests? ok lets run!"

I'll be honest, I'd rather kill mobs while exploring or going through a dungeon than being told to kill x of y. I tend to play LOTRO more like this then accept every quest.
The differences are notable.
One, there are people who like to get together and group and "shoot the shit" while they kill mobs. This is primarily a social thing.
Secondly, there is a certain fun factor to exploring and kiling mobs because they are "bad" or attack you. Look at games like Morrowind or Oblivion. There are quests but the main thrust of the game can be you exploring and seeing what's there. Heck, my roommate didn't do any of the main quests and only took the random quests that he found in the cities/country side. Other than that he mostly explored.

I think your choices are limited,because imo there is still only ONE game thta offers a no questing treadmill,and so happens it is my fave game,so i can answer any questions.

Missions/quests to further the story/unlock zones, classes etc and then get a group, go to an area and grind on mobs. The reason this kind of grinding isn't boring, in my opinion, is because with a group of people and the way the class mechanics works it is almost always entertaining - unless you get a crappy group with no social skills.

In kill grinding games, you can team up to grind higher level enemies or stronger enemies that you cant solo. In quest based games you most likely can NOT kill someone who is over 5 levels or you or something like that.
I did grind in WoW for a few levels on my warlock ebcause it was faster (corruption + CoA = dead dragonling) and I did that for 2 levels before going back to questing.
The way quest based games handle combat tends to be different especially the ones that recently come out. It makes me feel like the actual killing isnt as fun... Unlike say...In Ragnarok Online where youre a level 21 mage killing level 60 zombie prisoners with 20-30 other level 20-70 archers, healers, mages. 1 hit and you die but hey! there are enough of you to kill them in one flurry of attacks! Or like in Tantra online where you group up and fight enemies that are as hard as bosses in WoW instances.

Asherons call is like this , and it was a game i loved. Why go camp random mobs for xp instead of quests? As already mentioned the time spent running to and from and finding quests and quest mobs is gone, In asherons call i used to go kill golems for pyreal motes and always had a large party to do so and we could chat adn talk and discuss the game while we camped. Doin quests now usually take short periods of time, grouping with people to do them is slower then soloing, and can be down right cumbersome making sure everyone is on the same step.
To those who say you can do that in a modern mmo, i laugh. i never played eq so i cant speak for the loot system, but in Asherons call the gear that dropped from killing mobs was the gear you actually wore on your toon. If you started at level 1 and just grinded mobs in say world of warcraft by the time you got tot he 20's you would have many unfilled slots of gear and your character just wouldnt be competetive.

MASSIVE difference,running back n forth to npc's is not fun in anyone's book.The most fun is of course the combat to which you are doing if camping mobs.
The real difference shines if the game is offering a good grouping experience,FFXI for example gives bonus xp if the player or group can kill in a certain time limit and the mob has to be a certain skill level.So you are also being rewarded for killing as you might get bonus xp for questing.The time limit is challenging,but that is part of the fun,i don't want an easy mode game and MOST quests never give you anything challenging to kill,i played all the questing games and they are too easy for me to bother anymore.
Also MOST every quest sure does give you rewards,but you get zero choice of where and how you play and you have to keep running back n forth wasting sooooo much time,you probably could have killed a bazillion more mobs in that time you waste running around.I would say after doing for example 2000 quests to which i have done playing EQ2 for example,i wasted easily many months just running back n forth to npcs or looking for npc's.
FFXI did have the flaw of lfg wasting time,but that is not the games fault,you never have to waste time,you can farm or craft or solo with lfg flag up.Also it is not like FFXI doesn't have quests either lol,as a matter of fact ,it's quest system is more in depth than Wow or Eq,so if you find a time you want to do some quests,you can,but without pressure to do them.

I'd definitely recommend Anarchy Online based on the OP. It has received some streamlining with later expansions, but the parts of the game that are available for free is very much an "old school" experience:
There are two main options for levelling:
Killing mob camps much higher level than you in groups.
Doing team missions. These are private instances generated for you and your team where you choose the level of the mobs (+- 50% of your level) and verious other parameters. The layout and location of the mission (which your team has to travel to) is randomized.
Whichever you pick, most of your xp comes from mob kills, and you generally always get more xp in a full team than solo.
Some other things it has going for it:
Timed named mob spawns with great items and low drop rate. Camping heaven.
Dungeons are public instances rather than private, so you can waltz into them solo and find people to team up with.
No restrictions on teaming with opposing factions other than losing your faction's xp bonus (based on land control)
I'm guessing from your (The OP's) signature and bunny avatar that you would appreciate that the game has the best selection of social clothing and emotes I've encountered in any MMO.
There are quests, but they are either part of the tutorial to get you started, or extremely long "epic" quests that are story driven. They shouldn't be skipped, but they are not used for levelling.
I could go on, but it's free to play in the huge original world from level 1-200 (out of 220). The graphics are outdated, the interface is a bit odd (but not necessarily bad) and it gets boring after playing a few years, but that's just about the only cons I can think off.
Edit: I just realized Castille was not the OP, so ignore the bunny comment. I think my post is still relevant.
I will say Lineage 2, there are quests, but in no way are they worth anything other than simple items or a tiny bit of exp. You just straight camp and grind up until level 85 which takes forever to hit. It's all about group xping though, and the community is superb for that. Once you get to around 60+ grouping gets really fun, expecially in dungeons.

Anarchy Online, those were the days Yes i've quit it after LOTS of years of playing but Anarchy delivers exactly what OP wants.
- There are leveling "areas" where grinding went on 24/7. It was in the game's non-written rules that when you leave the group, you provide a substitute for you, or if you cannot, you ask the rest of the group to search for a substitute.
- The game is deep. After leveling, you get points that you spend in whatever skills you want (and there are hundreds of those)
- The game has a hardcore twinking system - the gear you can wear is dependant on your stats, not level. You can increase your stats through buffs/implants/symbiants (evolved implants)/stat weapons and more
- The raids were server-wise, everybody gathers and then they enter the instanced or non-instanced content. Everyone gets points, and when items drop, bidding for those items starts
- There are organisation cities, raids, pvp grounds with towers which offer buffs etc.
I cannot confirm that these things still go on, as i did not play the game for like 1 year or so.
I would really REALLY love to know if there is another game which offers the same level of customisation, the social grinding and the same feeling as Anarchy gave me. I'd like an answer from someone who played both AO and FFXI pretty seriously, should i try FFXI?

It CATERS to this style of play, and has always meant to be played that way.
There is a large group of us who came back or are starting new on Titan--- soon to be Phoenix. We have like a 15 page thread in the FFXI forums. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet all with the same mindset.

I should have mentioned that there is the problem that the FFXI game DOES require a registred credit card to play,this is becuase of fraud which goes around al lthe game out there.
I did have a problem myself but seemed to get around it with persitency,but seemed the CC check the game uses does check only VISA USA and not VISA universal,as mine was a VISA Canadian.Like i said i just kept trying and not even sure what i did different,but i eventually got it to accept my CC,took about 10 tries as the usa check obviously did not recognize my CAN visa,oh well i got through and am playing.
I am pretty sure as well that you can call them via phone,yes a pain always a bit of wait time to get through and the long distance cost,but you should be able to set something up if having the CC problems.

Too late since I tossed away my FF11 cd box in fury a few years back. I also got WoW that time which was fun but then I got sick of quest grinding -.-

I'd definitely recommend Anarchy Online based on the OP. It has received some streamlining with later expansions, but the parts of the game that are available for free is very much an "old school" experience:
There are two main options for levelling:
Killing mob camps much higher level than you in groups.
Doing team missions. These are private instances generated for you and your team where you choose the level of the mobs (+- 50% of your level) and verious other parameters. The layout and location of the mission (which your team has to travel to) is randomized.
Whichever you pick, most of your xp comes from mob kills, and you generally always get more xp in a full team than solo.
Some other things it has going for it:
Timed named mob spawns with great items and low drop rate. Camping heaven.
Dungeons are public instances rather than private, so you can waltz into them solo and find people to team up with.
No restrictions on teaming with opposing factions other than losing your faction's xp bonus (based on land control)
I'm guessing from your (The OP's) signature and bunny avatar that you would appreciate that the game has the best selection of social clothing and emotes I've encountered in any MMO.
There are quests, but they are either part of the tutorial to get you started, or extremely long "epic" quests that are story driven. They shouldn't be skipped, but they are not used for levelling.

I could go on, but it's free to play in the huge original world from level 1-200 (out of 220). The graphics are outdated, the interface is a bit odd (but not necessarily bad) and it gets boring after playing a few years, but that's just about the only cons I can think off.
Edit: I just realized Castille was not the OP, so ignore the bunny comment. I think my post is still relevant.
I will say Lineage 2, there are quests, but in no way are they worth anything other than simple items or a tiny bit of exp. You just straight camp and grind up until level 85 which takes forever to hit. It's all about group xping though, and the community is superb for that. Once you get to around 60+ grouping gets really fun, expecially in dungeons.

Spot on.
Anarchy Online, those were the days Yes i've quit it after LOTS of years of playing but Anarchy delivers exactly what OP wants.
- There are leveling "areas" where grinding went on 24/7. It was in the game's non-written rules that when you leave the group, you provide a substitute for you, or if you cannot, you ask the rest of the group to search for a substitute.
- The game is deep. After leveling, you get points that you spend in whatever skills you want (and there are hundreds of those)
- The game has a hardcore twinking system - the gear you can wear is dependant on your stats, not level. You can increase your stats through buffs/implants/symbiants (evolved implants)/stat weapons and more
- The raids were server-wise, everybody gathers and then they enter the instanced or non-instanced content. Everyone gets points, and when items drop, bidding for those items starts
- There are organisation cities, raids, pvp grounds with towers which offer buffs etc.
I cannot confirm that these things still go on, as i did not play the game for like 1 year or so.
I would really REALLY love to know if there is another game which offers the same level of customisation, the social grinding and the same feeling as Anarchy gave me. I'd like an answer from someone who played both AO and FFXI pretty seriously, should i try FFXI?
FFXI hands down.
It CATERS to this style of play, and has always meant to be played that way.
There is a large group of us who came back or are starting new on Titan--- soon to be Phoenix. We have like a 15 page thread in the FFXI forums. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet all with the same mindset.
