Guild Wars 2 Hands-on | Eurogamer

Master10KMaster10K Member Posts: 3,065

An interesting write-up by Eurogamer, with some bold statements from the co-founder of ArenaNet followed by their hands-on experience with the game...

"We can make the highest quality MMO ever released. That's been our goal: this will be the highest quality game that the industry has ever seen... And it still has no monthly fees."

Hmm. Perhaps it's just me but I thought Arenanet valued humility and working with quiet diligence while every other game boasts loudly that they're the second coming, essentially letting actions speak louder than words. Strikes me as odd to hear an Arenanet rep talking that way.

    Here is Martin's Reply

This is not bragging. Our goal is to make the highest quality MMO ever released. That is why we keep telling you "when it's ready".

It is something that every developer should aim for, and so do we.

I would agree with you but then I think back to the many times ArenaNet staff (Colin in particular) have stated that they are aiming to make the greatest MMO ever made. So it's no surprise that the co-founder may up the ante when so sure of the product before him. However it's also likely that Eurogamer have just mis-quoted him, to develop some small buzz.

    It's PR.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

^Is the praise is finally "getting to them"?!

That was a good write-up. I like the confidence backed by serious belief.

Big emphasis on "bold" there I think. I mean mostly I think it was Eurogamer fluffing things up a bit in their write up, but they did say they want to make the best MMO ever. Still they did qualify that statement by sayong that they are goals. So overall I'd say it's good to see a team that is setting high standards for itself, and one that definitely has been walking the walk if all these demo reports are to be believed.

Of course it is. But it is a different style of PR than they previously engaged in. It represents a new style that is largely emulated by everyone else marketing/hyping games.

I'm not saying I am turned off by it, but I much preferred the 'below the radar, quiet confidence' approach to the atypical chest thumping.

I will be interested to see how this manifests itself and the reactions of players when it does.

As with the first Guild Wars, no monthly subscription will be required and the game will be supported through the sale of customisations and services as well as expansion or content packs in some yet-to-be-finalised form. (O'Brien is a staunch advocate of micro-transactions, feeling that they "align the interests of players and developers" and "the only reason debates happen is that there are some games that really screw their players.")

Lol, never. I've always noticed how they talk all high and mighty especially when regarding the monthly fees in their past blog posts and interviews and very often talking against the rest games rather than hyping their own.

It's not often you hear we'll improve your service and ask you to pay us less for it?! Although hype is a curse of sorts...

I never thought they sounded "high and mighty." More confident. Possibly too confident, but they seem to genuinely believe in what they're doing, and sometime that comes off a bit wrong to some people.

I imagine it has something to do with western stance towards marketing in general. If you're not singing praise about how your game is going to be the next big thing it means you're hiding something... or something.

Confident is fine to me and I'm rather happy when I read them say that they want to make the best MMO possible. I'ts when they choose to strike the other companies and games that I don't like.

And have they stuck any other companies or games? So far I haven't seen anybody from Anet say anything bad about any specific company or game.

Well sure but I haven't seen them mention anything about other games (other than that they have taken ideas from, such as league of legends) or companies.

you mean the american stance , as in europe it works alot more like if you are singe praise ... then you are hidding something . Its a big difference that salesmen that cross the atlantic have better be aware off.

I prefer quiet humility myself.  It places them somehow above their competitors.  I just hope I never see something as asinine as "We're not in Azeroth anymore," officially associated with GW2 or ArenaNet.  Frankly, I'd feel embarrassed.

I don't think GW2 will dethrone WoW, but I'm glad that they aren't content to live in the King's shadow as just another simpering, sycophantic courtier.  If you're going to stretch anyway, reach for the stars.

No, but they did refer to "other MMOs" in the manifesto video.

Any specifics? A general phrase like "other MMOs" is nothing to get upset over. It just shows they are trying to be different than everybody else and making their own game. It's when they start calling out SPECIFIC games or companies like TRION and EA did with WoW that I start worrying.

Exactly. If ArenaNet outright says "You're not in Azeroth anymore" or says they wanna take big big chunk of WoW's 12 million subs, then I'd be concerned. But instead they are basically saying what they've always been saying, that they want to make the best MMO... just with more gusto now. ^^

Mike O' Brien also said this: "We don't intend to be number two this time. We certainly have our sights set on number one."

Personally, I don't really care what a dev says regarding this and find it amusing how much blown up out of proportions things can be by some people. It's even more amusing to see how when one company makes bold statements then people react all indignant and disgusted, while when another company of the game they like makes such statements then it's suddenly ok, with some fuzzy justifications for it. It just how double-standards a lot of people regard things.

I guess it also depends on what the developer is doing to beat the number one. If the developer is attempting to imitate the number one then people will be disgusted by it but if the developer is trying to differentiate itself then there's a bit a leeway in that regard. I mean that in the context of what I feel people think.

    This is not a game.

I have to say this game is now at the top of my list for a game I hope will be THE one for some period of time.Since i'm not playing any game at the moment...the wait is not easy.
