Look I love DAOC but if you haven't played it and are starting new. You won't like it. You will have alot to learn and you basically will find groups if you have a reputation. Its not for the fain't of heart to getting started learning the game and making a rep.The PVP is still good though and the population still has 2-3k during prime times you will find fights
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Fromn all the many MMOs i have played with many of them offering PvP too the only one that ever catched me for pvp was Daoc bcs its the only game were it was PvP, the RvR with a good, honorable reason.
No Lineage, no AoC, no SWG, no WoW, no whatever else ever offered me a better motivation and a better implementation. Today Daoc has aged very much but the very same system/foundation/Background with a modern engine would do wonder! Its absurd how the best PvP-Idea that has ever been released is ignored by everyone, or cut down to inoperativity. Combine Daoc with EvE and you may have an even better system!
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
Yeah it does boggle the mind that no one has really made a game that has beaten daoc's system. Planetside is very similar and I can't wait for PS Next! I've played most of all mmos except rift and I always quit and come back to daoc...I'm not even going to waste time/money on rift unless I start hearing that the PvP magically is the best thing ever which 95% chance wont happen. WoW is just a terrible game in comparision when it comes to pvp, eve is ok but can be like watching paint dry on a wall and I can't hold on to a sub for more then 2 months there. DAOC has kept me since 2002, I've taken breaks and stuff but I always come back and I have an active account there now.
Audioslave is right though, new players will have it rough when going up against the vets. But DAOC has a really great BG system to let you get the hang of it with other players of the same ranks while you are leveling. Just got to make sure you can have a decent template that caps stats and resists for the BGs and you will do good
You can use this simple equation to figure out what youre really comparing
DAOC = DAOC
WoW = WoW
WAR = DAOC + WoW
Rift = WAR + WoW
DAOC = WAR = Rift
DAOC = DAOC + WoW = (DAOC + WoW) + WoW
It Basically comes down to DAOC and WoW which is:
DAOC - An open end game focused PvP system with 3 factions and player vs. player focused killing in an open map. Well thought out to improve your character via abilities, faction rewards and group focused. The goal is to kill mids, hibs or albs, take keeps etc. (As a note I play WoW on a pvp server and frequently see possible pvp interaction that is cast aside because of other activites...daily quests, farming, etc. In DAOC, I never passed by enemy without trying to kill them)
OR
WoW - A BG focused PvP that most people do to get supplementary gear or to pass time while waiting for the next raid. Save for arena, its possible to do all of their BG's and never actually kill another player (vs. player?...eh, not really). Think about it, you dont have to kill anyone.
There really isnt a comparison, one is the focus of the game, one is an aside to cater to the PvE element who want to live "dangerously". If you missed DAOC its too bad, it was and still is an exceptional game that I feel was caught in between 2 MMO waves and had a chance with WAR but missed it. To me, it really is another subgenre in the MMO sphere as I have played almost all MMO's since EQ and have never had an experience like DAOC.
I wish some developer out there would read this thread and realize that a DAOC2 would be a goldmine. Instead of spending so much time and effort developing some other new pvp concept which naturally involves a high degree of risk, and trying to lure a playerbase to it, all they have to do is remake DAOC and they would immediately get 100K+ subscribers. Hey, any present or former DAOC player that heard there was a remake would flood the web for more info and an ETA on release.
Unfortunately, developers tend not to listen to what people want. I guess their egos are too big to want to work on someone elses idea.. and everyone loses in the process. For crying outloud... buy the rights for DAOC, remake it, revamp it, run with it, make a ton of money because all 100k of us will gladly subscribe.
I almost don't want DAOC 2 to be made now, since I have very, very little faith that a developer would make it right. Assuming they would, then that would be great. Magic 8 ball says "outlook not so good."
I don't play Eve anymore, but man, I have done just a ridiculous amount of PVP'ing in Eve, and 90%+ of it was small gang, duo, or solo, and definitely not casual. The other 10% were probably mostly ganks and things like that, but very rarely zergs.
Null sec isn't the only place to fight. Go to wormholes or join a pvp training corp that avoids zergs and experience the glory that is extraordinarily strategic and tactic space pvp.
Sorry i know i have not played it in a long while but hands down DAoC is the absolute best PvP experience i have ever had to date. Nothing beats three factions fighting over relics, keeps, and territory.
Too bad MyThick turned its back on DAoC in favor of an truly inferior game (WAR) and allowed all those hopeful ideas to fall to the waste side.
Really not sure why you have Rift in this as a good choice for PvP, but i would say thats the lesser of a PvP title.

If those are my options then WAR. Although it is essentially a dead game, IMO. However, the PvP/RvR was always a blast back when I played.
Indeed, best pvp ever and you dont even need arenas and what not to find it, in l2 pvp finds you.
Between these 3 i go with DAOC.
this is my youtuve channel completely dedicated to the daoc videos I've made. The vid on the main page was made last month.

Kind of a necro.

DAOC > Shadowbane > Lineage 2 > AoC at release > WAR > 99% games out there > my granma > a rock > another rock > Rift
If you want real PVP: Not an MMO (TF2, LoL, etc)
If you insist on MMO PVP: WOW
In you want casual zerg PVP: Darkfall/EVE
