There are few boring MMOs. There are many bored and burnt Veterans

HerodesHerodes Member UncommonPosts: 1,494

I had so much fun in Diablo 2: People here and there from around the world.
Then I joined DAoC. People around me in a virtual world! How cool is this?? And I can fight other factions! Woohoo!

When I look at it today, then I sat in some dungeons for days of my life while a poor being named "Tank" pulled mobs to be killed for hours and hours. It is a bit like the army:
When I was there it was a cruelty, but today when I think of it I say "hey, we laughed many times, it was a good time".
I don´t even try to imagine if my first MMO was Ultima Online - my account was corrupted while installing the CD somehow.

It was a really good feeling, when I found the worlds of the internet.

Recently I tried WoW, I tried Lotro, I tied Rift. To make it short I am so freaking bored of them.

It is easy for me to insult todays games: they don´t have the same quality and such. They Should have the world and Crafting of Vanguard, 3 factions like DaoC, gameplay mixed in FPS, RPG, RTS, RBG, puzzle...
But in case of DAoC: imagine while you are sitting in the Salisbury Plains and wait for your tank to pull a giant or legionaer, the sky above opens and mobs spawn.

I for me am bored of this kind of MMOs. But do you want to deny them for todays people, who play a single player RPG, a Bioware game? (<- I couldn´t resist)
I couldn´t resist, because playing with people in the world should always be above a single player game.

Excuse my weak english.

I have no idea if you are saying current games suck or not.

I'm not burned out on MMOs, I'm burned out on crappy ones and yes, there are plenty of MMOs out there that do not even remotely meet my criteria of fun.

By the way, I'm very much looking forward to Star Wars The Old Republic.  It has a nice mix of personal story and all of the social aspects of MMOs that we've come to love.

Dont forget that most players in these days it was there first mmo, so for most it was special and we where not poluteted becouse already playing for years many different mmo's.

So saying 10 years ago mmo's where quality and community alot better is not realy true it was just the beginning.

I remember how alot players where so amazed with entering Dereth for first time back in '99- 2000(asherons call) and just loved it.

These days in 2011 players come ingame for first time most already have played millions of mmo's and they start whine whine and whine and complain why its not like WoW or why the game sucks. This kind of behavior is what i hate and make me stop playing, and go to forums or play solo game. Social behavior of most gamers these days is below avarage and thats why i play less and less multi:(

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

I think it is a truism to say most mmos are REPETITION of old concepts.

I find it odd that Street Fighter will be one of the flagship games on the new DS-3D, taking another eg. Yet in SF's case it is a self-enclosed game that could be played anytime. Most mmos do not even have that to say about themselves, the SF clones you never bothered to know about? Still, innovation does not seem that apparent?

Back to mmos, it's a big space and online is the big draw that allows so many underwhelming titles, maybe.
  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441

Well, that is at least partially true.

MMOs have been rather similar with a few exceptions the last 15 years so it is not strange that many people are tired of playing similar gameplay that long.

But some parts of MMOs are really boring. Crafting 45 useless tin swords to raise your crafting skill 1 step is a good example. Or doing a raid 50 times in the hope of getting a certain drop.

Other parts are really fun of course.

This is a very good point.

You begin to compare, what is better what is worse and you lose the actual game - it is a bit like a bitch ;).

I believe, it is even worse in metagaming guilds.

I am not bored of MMORPG's.  I am bored of the standard themepark MMORPG as they have evolved from EQ1--> WOW-->AOC-->LOTRO-->Rift-->Clone of the month.

I would love to play a DAOC/UO/AC/ clone, but no one has made a MMORPG even remotely close to them, they all are riding on the coatails of the above mentioned design path.

Or, I'd love to play a game that was completely new and different, though that of course is a riskier and much tougher order to fill.

Stop blaming the players for a  lack of imagination and over predictability on the part of the Developers and the suits who fund them.

Yes i agree... IF Polluted now means experienced... I'm sure any advice yoru father has given you is biased by his polluted view of his life events as well. The pollution is in fact the new cookie cutter formula MMO that has plagued the genre and threatens to kill it entirely.

I have to agree with you unfortunately, while I have high expectations of MMO's only after playing a few of them I find it that the uncontrollable factor of most devs is the community. For one trolling is popular, and I think we need to put a stop to that, too many people use the internet as a place to be a dick because they won't be held accountable. More games especially mmos need systems like Real ID, I may not hav to see your real name, but anytime your on a character there needs to be a unique indentifier for all your alts and realms where people can leave comments on and such with down and upvotes. You feel like trolling in the capitol citys, fine but its going to stick with you.

Because of the above reasons I keep looking for single player games that have aspects like MMO's. It's not that im at all anti social in fact there are people out there in wow and other MMO's that make me want to play again but I knew it would just be a pay for skype program. Most of the time I would be sitting there sending tells to people wondering why I am staying with what the game really has to offer just got old, besides the very few people.

I don't think there are bored and burnt veterans.  I'm not bored of videogames (in general) at all, and I've literally been playing them since they were invented.  I played ASCII games on terminals as a kid, had a Northstar computer (total of 32 kB of RAM which also had to host the OS) with a thermal printer, had pong hooked to the TV, then the Atari 2600, handheld mattel games (football, soccer, baseball), then the Atari 5200, Apple II+, Original IBM PC (8086), many many PCs since, Nintendos, DS, Playstations, Xbox, Xbox360, etc.

I'm still an avid gamer:  much prefer it over TV watching.  But gaming needs to advance to keep your interest.  There are games that I logged 100's of hours in back in the 1980's that are laughable these days.  There are some timeless classics but for the most part what once was fun is left in the dust as time moves forward.

Problem with MMOs today is they are not advancing anymore and hence are boring to those that have played them for years.  But I'm not worried, innovations will happen.  It may be an entirely new genre that takes its place, who knows.

I still remember the first time I launched Doom on my PC:  in 5 seconds I knew videogames had just entered a new era.  More jaw dropping moments will occur, and MMOs will ultimately advance beyond recongition.  I have no doubt about it because when there is a demand, there will eventually be a supply to fill it...

When there are lulls in one genre you play another, or enjoy some of the more recent classics.  And eSport type games are always fun for the simple competetive pleasure and there is always an active eSport game that have 100's of thousdands ready to play...

I thought you might be right, but then It occured to me...

I have 55 hours over the last few days on Dawn of War 2: Last Stand.

It's a RTS game, but the Last Stand part is like a MMORPG, where you unlock equipment and gain levels. Very RPG-esque.

Basically, I'm saying I love Last Stand for the same reason I love MMORPG's. So I certainly am NOT burnt out. Yet... most MMORPG's are boring.

If being a developer means being quiet, mature, well-spoken, and disconnected from the community, then by all means do me a favor and believe I'm not one.

I completely agree.  Unfortunately I think developers are starting to settle in to a fairly predictable pattern and the games that have come forth over the last 2 or 3 years really just aren't that good.  For me as an MMO gamer I'm looking towards the new Star Wars game as something that may be good and whatever CCP is working on.  Otherwise, I don't have a lot of expectations out of this genre anymore.

Yeah, but you can be burnt out on some MMOs but not all.

You could be burnt out on Wow and still love Eve or the other way around.

Sorry Kyleran, but you like me are also an old fart here. You SHOULD know there are many different MMOs around here, not just EVE (I am not stalking, I just like reading your posts).
For people who look for something different, there ARE games like EVE, UWO, Perpeblah, FE and more.

I'm with you OP.  It's not that modern games suck...  they just don't hold my interest the way D2 or UO did.

While I eagerly anticipate D3, I'm not expecting it to consume my life the way D2 did.

I can 120% respect this idea.

I've often had one bad thing to say about Rift. It's a wow clone.. In every other way, the game is great.. in the same ways that WoW is great -- I'm not trying to derail your thread.

My point is that if I had never played WoW or only played it a short time, I think I could really enjoy RIFT.

My hope is that other mmo's will spark my interest in the way that FFXI and WoW have, but you may be right.. I may never feel that spark again.

there's a reason i mostly play offline single player rpg's. i don't have to deal with anybody's bullshit. i can do whatever i want. i don't have any obligations to some guild that requires their players to be on at certain times for raids, i don't have to hear the whining or recieve threats of being blacklisted for griefing other players who were on the opposing faction like i did in WoW.

when i DID play mmorpg's, i was mostly running around solo. i hated being in a guild. i hated logging in and having some stupid obligation to a bunch of people i could care less about, and i'm certain the feeling was mutual. i also hated dealing with guild leaders and officers who thought they were gifts to wow-kind. they also seemed to feel that people should worship the virtual grounds their toons ran around on. people like that were the reason i had toons on both factions. i liked griefing people like them.

for the record, world of warcraft was not my first mmo. everquest was my first. that game was neat. i also tried and played daoc, diablo 2, and guild wars. i played guild wars for a few years, actually. the pvp in that game was the most balanced out of any game i've ever played. however, there were some builds that were pretty crazy. the one i rocked for quite some time was the 130hp dervish/monk build. it was great for both pvp and solo farming......unless i came across a mesmer with shatter enchantment. that was a one shot kill. {=o( in pvp, the necro toucher teams would negate all my enchantments and kill me within 2 touches. >=o|

at any rate, i don't really plan on picking up any current mmo's. i have my sights set on the witcher 2 and the elder scrolls v: skyrim. i don't have high hopes for diablo 3, which is quite sad. i hate how blizzard has merged battle.net into everything they do. i don't want any part of it.

LOL I too am playing DOW 2 The Last Stand.  Playing with friends and pugs, and you are right feels like an MMO but no sub fee's and no item mall.

I havent given up on MMO's but not sure if a monthly sub is justifiable considering I am having so much fun with multiplayer coop games like DOW2 Last Stand and the Left 4 Dead series.

Not sure about SWTOR after the disappointment of Dragon Age 2, not sure if Bioware can do it with EA calling the shots.  Hope Warhammer MMO pans out.

  • ThorqemadaThorqemada Member UncommonPosts: 1,282

    Well, i disagree.

I still like gaming very much, also mmos, but they have not advanced in gameplay so much - sometimes/often even stepped back.

Storywise a good SRPG is way ahead of most mmos, to do fun things in mmos like slaying a raidbos with 6 man instead of 30 is prohibited by the designers, the living world approach has not developed since Ultima, and if someone tries its a bug ridden fps control ffa pvp sort of game i very much dislike.

Well, i have some hope that SWTOR, The Secret World and maybe GW2 show some development into the right direction bringing Storytelling, Character Advancement, dynamic content, living World feeling to a new level.

I really think that SWTOR will hold me for atleast 1 year and the both other games i will test out and see how its executed.

If i want competition with other players i prefer sport games with championships, leagues, whatever, this is way more fun to me than ruthless ffa pvp which i hate for its dishonorable, betryaing, chaotic apporach.
But mabye some day a developer gets the idea to implement sort of that into a mmo.

Or offer again daoc like pvp which may be the case in The Secret World with its 3 societies.

I have grown expectations for my hobby - that is true :)

Believe me, I know, I've tried some of them (FE, Xyson, Perpetunum to name a few) but they were underfunded efforts that resulted in a barren playing experience. I play Rift for its social opportunities, (weak though they are) and not at all for its gameplay. (Though I do enjoy Rifting). None of the aforementioned titles are anything close to DAOC, SWG, or UO in terms of gameplay mechanics so as I said, there's still games I would like to see built.

I have to admit I do miss the exciting factor of starting a new MMO that was completely different (like when I went from Dark Age of Camelot to SWG) and learning how to play, meeting others and grouping up. Today's MMOs are all about solo questing to endgame.

I am on a hiatus really from PC mmos. I am actually going back to my console roots again (I have played them since the Atari 2600). My very first MMO was Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast.  I recently got Phantasy Star Portable 2 for my PSP and OMG I am loving it! So that is what is keeping me busy right now until GW2, or SW:TOR, or something better comes along on the PC. I also have to admit the game that has the most trophies on my PS3 right now is EA active sports 2. Consoles make great exercise games :P

I'm burned out.........I can admit it, 90% of you can't.  I have an mmo sickness and so do you. MMO's are the same as they were five years ago, and I have news they will stay the same for five more.  What are you expecting holograms ?

Maybe it's time to give up video games,,,,,,thats why America is fat !
