On the Fence - Is Rift for me?

GameMonger71GameMonger71 Member UncommonPosts: 122

I have been back and forth on getting this game for a bit now.  On one hand it is nothing new which does not encourage me.  On the other hand it is allegedly very polished and well put together.  Here are a few things that are influencing my decision:

1) I enjoyed the PvP in WAR.  It was not perfect but the small scenarios and zone raids were fun and kept you on your toes with a varied experience.  Noted, I am not a great PvP player, but I like the tension.

2) I did not enjoy PvE in WAR at all.  The Public Quests were okay, but the normal quests were not very good and the world left me flat, which is really sad since it was Warhammer.  As much as I like to PvP occasionally, PvE has to be good with an immersive worlds or I will not play.

3) I like a varied mage class (I actually liked the damage-healer hybrid of WAR's Archmage but hated the fire-only Bright Wizard).  I want a variety of spells and tactics and I do not want to be a clone skill-wise of every other mage out there.

4) I like a melee/bow hybrid ranger class...a bit more in your face with no kiting.  I like to open with a bow when I can and finish with swords (vice bunny hopping away to shoot some more).

5) I like good spell effects for my mages and casters (varied and neat spells graphics), but I do not want my ranger or other more non-magical classes constantly having sparkling weapons and strikes.

6) Community.  I do not want to play a game where the chat is inundated with poor language, rudeness, etc.  I know that some of this is inevitable, but there are games with more or less of this than others.

To be honest, I am impatiently waiting for GW2 and TOR, but I was wondering if RIFT fits enough of my above criteria to warrant my money and more importantly as a father and 60-hr a week job guy, my time.

Thanks!

    Honestly it sounds like you migh enjoy Rift.  I was a big fan of the classes and PvP in WAR as well and I've been playing Rift since release and am still enjoying it.  Let me try to match up your questions by list;

    1) There are Warfronts for each level and can be started as early as lvl 10.  The first Warfront is a newer concept in which both sides battle to hold onto a Relic.  As you hold the relic you gain points for your team but the catch is that you gain damage more and more the longer you hold the relic, with it eventually killing you.  I enjoy the Warfronts however I don't think they are as good as WARs were.

    2) While I consider the world to be very well made and beautiful the quests are very linear.  While I usually do not play games that are so linear in their quests, the story and the way they switch up the quests and areas have kept me interested to keep playing.  Yes you will get many of the same Kill X here and Turn in Here quests, you will also get different ones that throw a little spice into the normal everyday quest lines.

    3) Now here is the beauty of Rift.  You have the ability to combine any three souls you want.  These souls and their trees are what define your character.  There is actually a mage that is a damage-healer, as well as a mage that only uses damaging fire spells.  With the vast unique variety of souls you can combine then any way you like to make the class that you want.  I believe you would really enjoy the soul system.

    4) Again, the soul system allows you to be whatever you want.  There's a bow/gun soul as well as a ranger soul, and many knife/sword souls.  You can customize your abilities to your hearts desire to make whatever kind of rouge you want.

    5) I have never been a big person to pay that much attention to animation.  I enjoy the animations on my Warden although I know at the begining in beta this is something people complained about, although I thought they had fixed it long ago.

    6) This I would assume depends on your server however,  I've seen some of the best and worst parts of the community on my server of Laethys, and I would have to say it's a pretty good server overall.  You rarely get the sh*t talking and immature rambling like you would in WoW.

Honestly I would consider giving Rift a try.  Past level 10 in the trial, the game gets better and better and I started in beta, then head start, and have still been playing when I have free time.  I am also a full time worker as well as full time student and I feel like I make decent progress for a casual player.  Try it out and enjoy!

to the op if you did not enjoy warhammer then your not going to like rift. It is the same game engine.  It has the same auto attack bug, and the same types of quests.

You can completely ignore thist post.

While they used the same game engine, the two games play completely different.

Rift, for instance, didn't completely suck.

Based on what you said in the original post, this game should definitely be worth giving it a shot.  I'm not currently playing, but I'l planning to sub 2 hours after my last final in the first week of may!!! :)

Yes, to some extent.  I actually enjoyed WAR a tad more than Rift (at one point, WAR is a sinking ship now).  This is because the PvP I believe is a tad better.  But yes, the engine is the same, although it has been optimized much better in Rift.  I do not get stuck on random geography and die a horrible death like I did in WAR.  Also, the stuttering/hitching that I used to experience in WAR is non-existant for me in Rift.  But yes, the auto attack is wonky just like WAR, quests are similar, heartless kill and gather quests.  You have collections now, just like EQ2's system in Rift.  The system works ok, but I actually liked WAR's Tome more; I was one of those people who enjoyed tome hunting.

I would say this to the OP, pve is much better in Rift.  The invasions, Rifts, dungeons, all work better than WAR's versions, but from my experience the PvP was sorely lacking, so it really depends on what you expect to get out of it.

+1. If you like WAR scenarios PvP then you will like Rift Warfront PvP, they are very similar.

    2) I did not enjoy PvE in WAR at all.  The Public Quests were okay, but the normal quests were not very good and the world left me flat, which is really sad since it was Warhammer.  As much as I like to PvP occasionally, PvE has to be good with an immersive worlds or I will not play.

-1. PvE in Rift is dull as hell. The quests are bland and boring and Rifts are kinda like PQs except it is the same thing over and over ad nauesem

    3) I like a varied mage class (I actually liked the damage-healer hybrid of WAR's Archmage but hated the fire-only Bright Wizard).  I want a variety of spells and tactics and I do not want to be a clone skill-wise of every other mage out there.

+1. I like varied mage classes too and Rift does quite well in this area.

    4) I like a melee/bow hybrid ranger class...a bit more in your face with no kiting.  I like to open with a bow when I can and finish with swords (vice bunny hopping away to shoot some more).

Cant help you here. Never tried bow classes.

    5) I like good spell effects for my mages and casters (varied and neat spells graphics), but I do not want my ranger or other more non-magical classes constantly having sparkling weapons and strikes.

-1. This game has sparkling effects on just about everything.

    6) Community.  I do not want to play a game where the chat is inundated with poor language, rudeness, etc.  I know that some of this is inevitable, but there are games with more or less of this than others.

-1. Chat is like WoWs. Full of immature brats and fanatic fanboys.

To be honest, I am impatiently waiting for GW2 and TOR, but I was wondering if RIFT fits enough of my above criteria to warrant my money and more importantly as a father and 60-hr a week job guy, my time.

    -1.

Tally: +2/-3. Beside instanced PvP and playing around with soul combos. I dont think you will find much fun in Rift.

All in all this IS a WoW clone so if you like WoW then you will like Rift.

    Thanks!

    Welcome.

Pvp in this game is fucking aweful there are classes that are flat out way better than any other classes at group pvp.

  • dageezadageeza Member Posts: 578

I only played rift in the last 2 beta runs so i have a limited view of rift, i can say the game is well made and has a living breathing world but the quest progression was very linear and way to familiar and that turned me off of buying it, i am also waiting for GW2 and perhaps the secret world after it releases if failcom can for once live up to their hype and can  prove they actually have a players game...

I am currently in between games while waiting for the 2 mmo games that excite me the most but if i cant hold out that long i would say rift would be the first game i would buy to keep me busy until GW or TSW comes out..

GW2 is a no brainer to buy, however TSW is made by failcom and being published by EA so im very skeptical as i have no confidence in either but i love the concept if they dont booger it up like AOC...

    Playing GW2..

I would give it a shot.  Looking at your points I think this game fits your needs in most areas.  About the only issue I see is if you enjoyed battlegrounds in War you may be a bit disappointed with Rift in this area.  While they do have the same concept it is extremely lacking compared to how many were available in War. There is only one warfront available per every ten levels starting at level 10 so if you enjoy doing those a lot it can get to be rather tedious since there isn't any variation. The lack of lower level PvP items to be acquired and inability to put many points into the PvP tree past the first few skills until level 50 was rather disappointing as well.  Still, there is quite a bit there for those at 50 I suppose for one to tinker with.

You may be a bit disappointed with the mage builds in PvP play.  It seemed okay to me, but seems from what I have seen that many tend to think mages are underpowered PvP wise.

Outside of those "issues"  - if they even are ones to you - I think the game is one least worth checking out considering what you're looking for.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Let me get this straight to u.

There is nothing important to play right now so u are looking to play something new and refreshing that will keep u for sometime till some new more quality mmos come out.

If money does not mean something to u then go for it.

For me that i count  my money rift simply doesn't deserve them as i was in the beta and it didnt gave me the shots i need to have fun.

I prefere to spent money on quality projects that has been put work on them.

Lets hope swtor or gw will be nice but i dont hold my breath till i test their beta.

My greatest concern is warhammer 40k DM.Although it's a long way to wait.

In simple words If rift was free i would be in.Now im staying out and playing lotro and startrek Online.

With those criterias I think you at least should try out Rift.  I can't speak much about the community, I just played the beta and frankly is still the community forming, you have to wait a few months to know how it truly will be.

The bad thing with Rift is really the quests. They are rather uninspired and all of them feels like I already played them before. If you can live with that I really think you should go for it.

The good thing is the character customization, you can easily make the character you want there.

The spell efects is just so so, not bad but not really good either. Same go for the animations.

I dunno if the free trial is in yet or not but it sounds like it at least could be something to play when you wait for TOR and GW2. :)

Many thanks to all.  Everyone made many good points.  I am leaning more toward trtying Rift, with some significant lingering doubts.  If only GW2 or TOR had a release date, then I could maybe hold off another filler MMO until they release.  I am starting to get the feeling both will be Nov-Dec 2011 at best though.

I'd totally ask the same the same question even though i did the beta multiple times and the class system really pissed me off each time. If the game wasnt 49.99 maybe id actually try it again.

all derp'd out and nowhere to herpaderp.
