Its not like DAOC. That game was and still is unique. PvP in Rift is standard BG fair. Though the first BG you get to play is really fun. You have to wrestle for the control of an artifact. Your team gains points the longer a teamate holds on to the thing. The problem is that the further away you are from the center of the map where the artifact spawns, and so where the most action is, the less points you get. Also the artifact damages you more and more as you hold it so healers are really important.
No game has ever come close to the 'level' of PvP that DAoC brought when it was in it's prime. Not even close. Rift PvP is nothing special. It's very similar to WoW, the only difference is that you'll get some tug of war style of open PvP when Rifts are around the contested areas. Actually, it's more like a bunch of rogues sitting around waiting for some stragglers to mosey on by to solo the weaker rifts. Warfronts are the same as battlegrounds. If Rift had castle/keep seige, similar to WAR... I would love it even more. Currently, there's just no real reason to fight the other faction... which is why I quit WoW. There's no actual meaning, other than the fact that you CAN attack people. Hopefully this is addressed in later expansions, as it's one of the weak links in Rifts overall appeal to MMO'ers.

Pvp is very bad in the game imho
