Well, I have to say the game has grown on me. I think if you approach it for what it is instead of having expectations then you might enjoy it.

This is very, very true. If you try to approach and play this game like would WoW, Aion, or LotRO, you'll likely /ragequit and uninstall within a day. But if you just play the game without any preconceived expectations is can be quite fun.

It's more like--"If you approach the game for what it is instead of what it was supposed to be, then you might enjoy it." because that is of course where the massive fallout came from. It didn't live up to what it was supposed to be, or even what FFXI was, or even what a company like SE should be able to produce.

But! The redeeming qualities are three:

    • They're updating things as fast as they can and trying to make the game fun.

    • They admitted it. It's not really being pushed off on someone else. They made a Massive mistake--several of them--and they're owning up to it. Other developers with budgets and staffs as big and bigger sometimes blame the players or sound like children saying "It wasn't me.".

    • This third one is a little strange: FFXI is dying and XIV is trying to survive birth and that's not an insult to either. But even given the precocious state they're in with both games, they brought the servers offline for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and waived XI's fee for next month. That speaks volumes because there will be some players lost and they still did it remembering that, even for them, it is just a game and the resources they were burning were better spent towards heating people's homes.

They did not "take them down" to help out with the situation in Japan.  The entire country has rolling blackouts from the catastrophy.  They took them down as a result of the problems.  Lack of power and possibly lack of personel (depending on if they were in the directly affected area) are the major concerns.  They may die on the vine just for that and no other reason.

My heart goes out to them but dont make it into somthing that it isnt.

but they did take them down to help japan.  the government asked companies to conserve energy to help ease power shortages.  se complied by shutting down their servers, which helped save alot of electricity, something like 11 percent of what they use in tokyo.   yes there is /was problems with staff getting to work, and or worrying about lost friends and family but the main reason the servers were shut down was to conserve power so things like electric trains and hospitals wouldn't have to suffer more thatn they already have.

@Pro-Pain. Thanks, I thought it was known news, otherwise I too would have provided links. Thanks for the backup information.

@eveque67. Unexpected blackouts, rolling blackouts, and brownouts would have made for intermittent service. Technical errors happening from lack of staff might have happened as well but they were not ordered to take them down.. They took them down as a pro-active measure. I've made nothing but an accurate representation of the truth.

Had they kept the servers on, problems would have likely happened more often as well.

Now it is true that advance planned downtime, is better than sudden "You have been disconnected by the server" x1,000,000.

Approaching this game with a casual mindset has greatly enhanced my enjoyment out of the game. Trying a little bit of everything that takes my fancy, instead of mini/maxing has worked for me.

I think it's almost NECESSARY to play this game with a controller, as sad as that is.  I recently logged back in, and the mouse speed coupled with the clumsy menus make it nearly impossible to play with a keyboard.  Not to mention that weirdo camera system, too.

Once I get one, however, I think the game should feel a bit more natural.

(They still need to decrease response times, though)

MAIN: LOTRO (Chedriin Azariah, Landroval), STO (Jay Andover)

    SIDE: FFXIV, RoM, Wakfu

Are they still not charging a monthly fee?  If you were to purchase it today would you be able to play for free after the first month?

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Personally I am going to wait until SE releases the PS3 version before I reinstall the game.

Just tried it; due yesterday's maintance and then having to update have only managed to play a bit for about 30 min, but this was my impression.

Well before starting playing I had already decided to make a galka (cannot remember what are called now) hand to hand warrior, however after seeing how cute were the miquote, I just couldnt resist and made one instead.

The intro was impresive and after it and I was surprised to see that  the characters had almost retained the same level of character details. Probably they even look better then age of conan avatars but on the other had the city lost alot of its polygon count.

Since I had already read some user reviews and played ffxi for a long time (4 years) I was aware that this will not be like any other mmo with question marks and exclamation marks pointing marks marking important quest people. Islowly started talking to each npc one by one, some had some funny comments but text seemed to be lagging to apear n the screen (could it too high video settings ). Then after talking to all the the npcs I thought to myself "lets go explore beyond the small alley" and another cutscene stoped the action; this one was even cooler then the one before and involved some gobbue going rampant on the city.

When the cutscene was over i found myself helping in defeating a gobbue however I found the pace of the fighting a bit slow (this could be due the fact that the last game I played was dragon age 2 and had faster action ) Well the gobbue was down and started to look around I found a helpful tarutaru that adviced me to go to the local guild house to check for work their.

I was surprised when the tarutaru suggested that he would take me there, but I thought it would be more fun to continue to walk and look around the city In the end I managed to find it and was greated by another small cutscene. After the cutscene I had no more time since I had to go to work and logged out.

But I am definitley going to play more this game.

After exploring a bit more with my miquote today I am going to create a new character more carefuly probably a galka well thats it thanks for the advices guys

Yes, FFXIV has no monthly fee untill SE decides it's good enough for a P2P game and I don't see this day coming any time soon, half a year at least.
