I was looking for some sort of discussion on Trion and Rift at world of warcraft, I found a few but they were all "deleted", not closed, deleted. So I posted the following in the general discussion forum on worldofwarcraft.com. I submitted this post with my level 85 Tauren druid healer. Within literally 4 minutes, the post was deleted. Within that time I had 17 replies, there is obviously a demand for this type of discussion on their forums, but they WILL NOT allow it. Here is the post, let me know what you think.
Title :
****" Blues... please do not delete this thread, if need-be just remove the flamers? I would like to start a serious and mature discussion on the communities’ opinion, and empirical evidence on the differences and similarities between Trion and Activision Blizzard.
I would like to start by saying I am and always will be a dedicated Blizzard fan. Notice I said Blizzard, not Activision Blizzard. I literally own every game Blizzard has ever created, yes even the combat racing ones for SNES, and I have enjoyed them all very much. I have been playing wow since vanilla, not since launch but suffice it to say for a very long time.
I remember first playing Warcraft I; thinking to myself that I found a game company that gets it right. And it only went up from there, Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft are all wonderful series, and I would be hard pressed to admit how much of my life I have spent playing these franchises.
An IRL friend turned me onto to RIFT the day before it came out. I had no idea of anything about it at all. I saw my friend playing, and liked how it didn't look so "cartoonish" and thought I would give it a try. So on March 1st, at 12:01am I bought a copy from my local Wal-Mart. Since installing the game and starting a Guardian Warrior, I have not logged back into my WoW account once, not even to check my mail for gold from AH sales.
I find this a bit peculiar. In the past, I have actually tried to quit wow for work, a girlfriend, and to work-out and improve my physical condition. All of these attempts failed, and I always ended coming back to wow.
One of the major differences I have noticed with RIFT, is that Trion makes a very serious attempt to listen, and communicate with their community of players. It can be argued that Trion's community is much smaller so this task is more easily achievable, however I don't believe that is an excuse for Activision Blizzard.
Also, WoW is a game of evolution. It has grown into what it is now. I will be the first to say that yes, RIFT took A LOT from WoW, when I first logged into RIFT the first thing I said was "this looks like WoW". Now that I have reached level 46 (out of 50 max) I realize that what Trion did was try to take the best from WoW and implement it from the get go. This leaves only upward mobility for the game to "evolve" into something better and more expansive.
While they did take a lot from wow, Rift has its own uniqueness as well. The Rifts are great, and invasions force you to take part in the world community. Also the ability to be so flexible with your class is wonderful. Along with other minor enhancements (like group loot), Rift just feels more like a complete package.
RIFT's graphics are much better than those in WoW. When I first started to play WoW the only issue I had with the game was the "cartoon" look of it. I carried this grudge with me up until the day I left, and still feel it is the game's major drawback. If you haven't seen some screenshots from RIFT, go take a look. They are simply superior to WoW.
The last point I would like to make is that Activision has effectively taken Blizzard over. With a 52% share holding, Activision is the dominant partner in the relationship. Given the history of Activision, I was immediately turned off by this merger. For some history on the merger, go here : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=128252 .
My opinion is that Activision is obviously driven by the mission of "Milk as much as you can from as many as you can". I do not believe they give a damn about the player community, or their opinions or input. They only care about selling "virtual items" which to them is free money, and making sure expansions are separate packages which are chargeable.
In contrast Trion is showing in force that they WILL and DO listen to and work with the player community, which in the end is the lifeblood of their company.
I have noticed anecdotally that many players are leaving WoW for RIFT. I hear that this is a Fad, but for me it is not. If you look at my avatar I have obviously done the end game content in WoW, and have a long history of end game content as well as high level player (pvp, crafting, making gold, etc). I will not be coming back to WoW, Rift is my home for now.
I will be back for project Titan, at least to try it out. Oh and bet your ass I will be playing Diablo III. My only beef with Blizzard is that they merged with Activision, I just feel like right now... Rift > WoW.
What do you think? Please note I will not rebuke any opinions or argue with you, I simply want to know what do you think. "*****
That was the entire post. Just wanted to let you know, they will not allow ANY discussion on this matter in their forums.

How would you feel if your girlfriend decides to leave you, admits at having another lover and going to great lengths explaining why he's better than you?
You'd be pretty pissed off I reckon!
Hehe, nah kidding. It seems a bit excessive, this black-out. Perhaps it is a top level decision to not allow any rift praising anymore. Might be Trion's cocky advertising campaign, I dunno.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Yeah it's not really shocking that the forums for Game A strongly regulate discussion of Game B (a direct competitor).
Especially if discussion is viewable (from that dev's perspective) as outright slander.
DarkPony's girlfriend comment is not without merit either.

Typically, game companies do not allow for direct discussion of their game vs a competitor's game in general discussion. If you had tried posting this in "Off Topic", it may have stayed.
The reason isn't necessarily to not allow the comparison, but those topics typically devolve into constant flaming / asshattery. What is easier, scouring the thread to delete each offensive post or deleting the thread?
I would just like to point out that worldofwarcraft.com does not have an OT forum any longer.
Also, Trion is not deleting posts about WoW. Some have been LOCKED yes due to flaming / asshatery but not deleted.
I attempted to avoid anything that could be directly attributed to asshatery and made it clear that this was mainly my opinion.
Thank you all for your feedback.
It seems to me that Trion has a completely different attitude and work style than Blizzard. Both in the development of the game and playerbase attention, but also in the way they manage their product.
Just look at all the open betas they brought us, there was nothing to hide on Rift and Trion is pretty straightforward in every decision they make, while Blizzard became a corporation, they don't develop games anymore, they run a business, and that makes all the difference.
Exactly. Try posting an "I love Blizzard" or WoW post on Trion / RIFT's forums. You'll get the same response. Reword your OP here to apply in the DIRECT opposite and post it on RIFT's official forums. It will get locked if not deleted. My bet is if it's the SAME post in reverse.....it will be deleted.
I don't see the issue with either company doing that, actually.

Activision Blizzard removed "Massively Multiplayer" from MMO and Trion just put it back. The Blizzard I use to like is long gone.
In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...
Rift is not even 2months old and WoW is 6years old so most of your arguement is bit silly and not realy realistic. Its logical that RIFT devs listend to there fans right now its still in beginning they need to be alert and all for fans to keep them in there game and with the history of last 6 years they do this also becouse of so many other mmo's have failed and are long gone they dont wanne make same mistake.
But comeback in 6 months and maybe we have a complete picture here and discussion on what have happend in last 6 months.
Btw you have also not realy an objective view on matter as fanatic blizzard fan.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Like King Kong (WoW) vs. The Hulk (Rift). They're both powerful, but King Kong could smoosh the Hulk.

That paragraph warrants the deletion of your post. Sure, it doesn't seem bad, and your intentions are good, but no business will allow the marketing or promotion of a direct competitor, especially when the promotion indicates that the competitor's product is better than theirs.. The WoW forums are for discussing WoW, same as the Rift forums are for discussing Rift.
Just for fun: go on the Rift forums and make a thread about how much better WoW is than Rift. Let us know what happens.
I think you're taking it too personally. Also, this isn't the WoW forums O.o.

Is this the next MMA fight?
No, it's more like the next 8 year-old's sleep-over pillow fight. Lot's of noise, only egos get hurt.
1. The Hulk would destroy Kong, it's not even a long fight.
2. Rift isnt the Hulk. More like The Fabulous Frog Man (has a few tricks, is entertaining for a little bit, but ultimately not something thats gonna last for long in a fight versus a serious opponent).
... what are you talking about? Just because the Hulk can literally punch a planet apart, or dive into the magma of a planet to pull the tectonic plates back together...
... or withstand a direct hit from a nuclear bomb or a small moon, much less a puny biplane...
...
...
... okay. Seriously, a King Kong vs. Hulk matchup would be sort of depressing to watch.
Quick reminder to make sure to stay on topic in this post and back up your criticisms with some substance. ("Blizzard sucks because...." is fine. "Blizzard sucks" is not. ) Thanks

I played Wow for a long time. i have seen some post that were shocking to say the least. the kicking babys heads in was the one that made me stop going to the forums, and got me banned for saying stuff to this idiot that made it. but yeah you gotta quell the uprisings before it gets blown beyond repair.
Nothing like logging in as a mod and seeing real world PVP on the forums.
Trion is just doing what every company should do from the start. Blizzard does things well, and has kept a pretty clean track record....some of the masses get upset about some things Blizz does, but for the most part...they are an excellent company with a proven background.
Time will tell if Trion can keep up with the way they run things...this is just the beginning, and if they continue they will create a excellent name for themselves. They have listened to its players since....gosh, I think day one. Although they are really good now....lets see when they have grown, have a few games under their belt, and some time has passed. I really hope they can keep their "near pristine" (at least in my eyes) reputation and create excellent games!
It seems like I come across as "bashing" wow and "loving" RIFT. I was not trying to portray that idea at all. I was just offering MY personal opinion, and asking for other users' personal opinion. The post was not meant to persuade or to promote anything, except for discussion on people's opinion.
Thanks for all of the responses though, I very much enjoy reading them.
Ok...?
The OP is trying to make Blizzard look bad because Blizzard deleted his post. When in reality, any company would do the same thing. It's in any company's best interest to remove comparisons which favor a direct competitor's product.
It's not some conspiracy or evil agenda. It's simple business.
I'm not trying to defend Trion or Blizzard, I'm just pointing out the obvious: If the OP wanted to praise Trion, he should have done it on Trion's official forums, not Blizzard's.
It is a silly comparison far as I'm concerned. Maybe in a few years after Trion & Rift have been around a while it might make more sense to compare the two but right now just seems silly to have a "vs" debate with those two companies.
I don't blame Blizzard for deleting the posts either.
Anyways, they're both good games in their own ways far as I'm concerned. I enjoyed Rift during beta and may even purchase it when I need a break from my current mmo. As for WoW, I enhjoyed it for a period of time and even though I don't care to play it anymore I'm not one of those that feels the need to bash it. I enjoyed some aspects of the game and hated others. I will say that unlike some other mmos that I take a break from and return to oddly enough I have no desire to do that with WoW. To each their own though
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I will take Blizzard over just about anyone.
Trion took 100 million dollars and made a slightly better looking Warhammer Online.. No thanks.
Fear. Talking about the Rift in the wow forums is like advertisement and they fear losing more people. THey know wow is at a weak point and rift is pushing strong.
Along with the hate because of the rift ad.
Its censorship.
I actually wouldn't be suprised if Blizzard announces that they own Trion and Titan was a lie.*
*This is not a statement, it is a joke. Do not take it seriously. Do not tell your friends that Rift is actually the disguised Titan project. Do not tell your friends that Diablo III will be delayed because of extra people put on Rift development. Do not tell your friends to drink and drive.
You know, someone is going to do an internet search on Rift and Titan and see this post and start speading it to other places.... That is how the interweb works, isn't it?
