Is it worth trying?

I need a game to play for the summer, starting May 3rd at 3:00pm  (My last final for the semester will be over!!!)

Is it even worth starting up?  Is there an active community?  Any good active guilds?

Something else similar worth trying instead?

Not just no but Hell-No! Vanguard is still around for a few hundred loyal people. Vanguard to them is like a Spose who beats your butookish every day but you stay with them because you think they are going to change.

Naw but for serious... Vanguard is fun if you dont mind playing it by urself for the most part till u max level. Thats where everyone is on the game and thats where the action is.They have fixed the performance issues for the most part, this game is a good game but no meaning ful amount of people play it.

    Thats my Two Cents

And yes i still think vanguard should die so SoE can focus on EQ-Next

SOE doesn't focus on Vanguard anyway so it doesn't if the servers are up or down. That was just a dumb statement. Now on to the OP.

I personally recommend VG as it's one of my favorite MMOs. But as stated before it is very top heavy. Some of that can be fixed by joining a guild since VG has a mentoring system. But yes, you will be playing mostly by yourself. The community that VG has left is probably one of the best communities I've ever played with. They are friendly and very helpful. If you could I would recommend maybe bringing a friend along. It would help with the solo play a little bit. So in my opinion, is it worth it? Yes. You should atleast give it a try.  It's free and you have nothing to lose.

I bought the game for 7 bucks on Amazon.com, if anyone else is interested :)  I'm still a couple weeks from starting up, need to get finals out of the way, but i'm excited to give it a try.  Mostly looking for something to hold me over 'til SWTOR and GW2 get released.

Worth trying ? Hell yes. Awesome graphics, great gameplay, and fun classes. A glimpse of how a great mmorpg should be like at beta stage.

Worth playing ? Hell no. Vanguard is dead and not even the most fanatic beleive there will ever be an expansion to it.

Vanguard could have been the greatest mmorpg, but it never grew to be. But nevertheless, you could have fun with it for some months, just don't expect it to ever grow or change.

I have a 43 cleric that I always wonder about starting back up, but then whenever I am about to resub I just cannot get over the fact that SOE is not putting any effort or funding into this game. Why?? I can't believe it made it past budget cuts to be honest, and I sure wish we could get some kind of explanation of the plan for VG from Smed. It is ridiculous; let us enjoy the game that Vanguard could have been!!

They can let it die like APB, and resurrect it as a new 'thing', and offer something that is new and fresh. Maybe a Vangaurd with more, and smarter A.I.. Something like Rift but a bit more when it comes to A.I.. That would bring the game to life as something new, and they can bring in customers that way.

Or they can change the platform of their game to not have levels to reach end game quicker, so it becomes like a dota kind of game. To make use of questing, they can unlock the questing so that they include rewards relevant to any level.

These would be major overhauls, but they need something to bring in new people. I would hope for the second option of just reaching end game from the begining, and I don't want to buy another person's account to do that.

Its worth trying for the experience of a different MMO.

Its not worth trying if you want a new game to play. Opinion.

It's a fun and unique game, so play it for a month or so just to have experienced it before SOE does eventually pull the plug. My personal advice, however, would be to never ever invest more than a couple of dollars into a game that is not supported in any way. Keep in mind that the next step after dropping support will be dropping the servers themselves.

same here.. sometimes I think about my characters, the openness of Telon, how much fun it was just wandering around and exploring, actually having a house, awesome guild hall, etc... then I think about how SoE isn't doing anything to the game.. if they would put anything, just throw some crumbs at it, I'd be back in a heartbeat.. but as it is now VG is on life support and the plug could be pulled at any time. Play at your own risk..

Well, I just started playing again(I played for a short while around it's launch but stopped because of perfomance issues). I have to say it is a really awesome game, it's just too bad it's so empty. Maybe if all the people on here that are considering playing banded together we could get a good group going.

Well i am playing it at the moment  and enjoying it . what i would say is roll on telon server since thats where people are also join a guild but one that is active look around when your on trial island or just off it to see what guild tags you see.  Someone summed it up about vanguard perfectly . they said play for what it is now since there is no updates at all , but having said that if you are starting new you will not run out of content

Man I miss this game.. I played EQ2 since launch and loved it, but Vanguard felt as if it had even more soul to it. Just noone appreciating it unfortunately.

I've still got my game I bought on release. Would be interested to see if anyone is interested in starting it up again. Sure, it won't get new content at this point.. but even if you only made it to level 30 or so.. I reckon it's got a good couple of months of play in it. It may be a shell of what it was supposed to be, but I say if you miss it, play it! Games these days lack the depth Vanguard has, and worst case? You play it for a few months, enjoy it fully, find your little groups to play with and move on when something big comes out. That way you might not feel like you missed out on something great.

I think i'll install it now. I don't have anything above level 5 I think anymore since I started fresh.. but if anyone is interested in grouping here and there, or even just exploring the world, send me a PM or something. I can't change the fact SOE are not giving it much attention, but if people don't sign up to play it, it won't GET any attention! If there are so many fans out there itching to get it running, sign up for a month and see if it sparks some interest over on SOE's side. Afterall, it's only $15 for a month of nostalgia, who knows what will come of it?

Didn't SOE just reduce all their subs ? I got an email from them saying so.

  • AutofireXIIIAutofireXIII Member Posts: 35

That's strange.. I subbed to Vanguard for 4-5 months in total and have been an EQ2 live subscriber since launch up until january or so. Never received such an email.

With all of the cut backs at SOE and VG having never been a priority to them I dont see anything but very dark days ahead for VG. Sad considering it could have been something great. Try it if you are not looking for anything long term and if you have a few friends. Not the most solo friendly type of game.

SoE is too greedy. Since they are not showing any love to VG, they shuld make it Free to play and let it die, or make it free to play with marketplace (no restrictions unless they start updating again)

The only reason i ve not tried this game yet is because it's SOE.

The game may be good but soe is fail.

  • goblagobla Member UncommonPosts: 1,412

Playing it now and having quite a blast.

Current market I have to choose between boring, been-there-done-that games with lots of support and a big rude community and interesting, refreshing worlds with no support and a small but friendly community.

I know it won't last. But is there really anything that much better out there when it comes to an immersive fantasy game?

I'm just hoping it will last till something better comes along.

As a follow up to my post earlier, i'm patching the game now and am going to give it a sincere shot for one last time. Got a friend of mine to play with most evenings but others are welcome. I'll be starting it properly with a new toon about 4pm gmt/11am est tomorrow (friday 8th) and see how we get on.

Hope to see some of you there! If you're interested, PM me and i'll letcha know the name of the toons tomorrow when we get rolling so keep an eye out!

EDIT: I am a UK player but will be playing with a friend of mine from North Caroline, so don't worry about the time difference. Everyone is welcome!
