Um, you do realize that Smed didn't buy EQ right?  Smed was a co-creator of EQ and SOE bought it from them...  Smed wasn't even head of SOE at the time that EQ was bought, and wasn't for quite a few years after.

I doubt he's gonna answer back on that one.

I wonder the same. I don't really approve of DCUO as it is, but I see what it could have been and, in all fairness, ~could~ still become. I imagine that if those same people working on it did so under a better managed company, they'd have turned out a higher quality product instead of the obvious rush-job DCUO currently is.

They shouldn't be working on so many MMO's anyways.

SOE ... They love to torcher and kill games that start with good ideas and story, then they just smash em and dumb them down till they die. It makes me sad.. R.I.P SWG. The Matrix. and now The agency. Thats 3 confirmed but Im sure theres more... Theres always more...

SOE is now offically a Serial killer...

I feel for those guys out of work. I lost a job some years back on April fools. I remember my boss calling me saying the buisness closed. I thought it was a joke.

As far as rip SWG? Was this a closure?

So sorry to hear about the job losses at SOE.

As far as the Agency goes, that gap between the GDC and E3 2010 seems to have been spent in scrambling to find a way to make the game cheaper yet still viable. I had been very interested in it up to E3 but the presentation seemed confused, and vastly different to the game touted up til then.

Again though, and more importantly, sympathies to those who find themselves out of work this weekend. Hopefully they'll find work they enjoy on a project they can see through to release. Must be horrible putting years into something only for it never to see the light of day : (

I was skeptical of this game since I first heard about it.  I just didn't see how this game would work.

If they wanted to try something new, they could have tried an American western mmo.

Well, for some of us anyway.

    Have a nice day.

That was a good read and a half, made me rofl quite often throughout as well. History is a great teacher :)

On topic - always sad to hear of job losses, which is a shame but hopefully they will move into more progressive companies within the mmo market.

Gambling in game, and operatives working while offline sounds like swtor. If only the ranged classes in swtor where done like AoC with fps, then there would be no great loss with the Agency gone.

But the fps'er is now back to the drawing board, drawing on the dreams of a great fps mmo with all the right elements. Sweet dreams fps'ers, sweet dreams. That is the only place where things make sense..... in never Neverland.

I'd like to point out that several games taken in by SOE would have died a quick and painless death at the hands of dept collectorsas the studios developing them went down in flames. SOE have bought several high risk projects over the years and it would seem that at least one company was impressed with the work they did as WB/DC hired them to make another MMO despite what happend to MxO

Would have been a nice game... But i think they looked at APB and relised that the idea is somewhat flawed and very hard ti implement.

This have been a good conversation

You and about ten others, this would have been a niche game anyway.

Bad discisions and mismanagement costs job losses,SOE is full of both so are a few other so called AAA companys. My opinion ' we have already seen layoffs in mmo and game companys, the pie doesnt have slices for bad companys to take a piece of. Just like in my work (Engineer) if i was no good at my job or i made mistakes then myself and my team would suffer.'

This just has'nt happened there would have been team meetings everyweek with updates on the game and overall progression of the work, in the end  someone had had enough of the bullshit, like i said stinks of mismanagement.

You know about the quake that hit Japan right ? And it's kinda hard to keep production running what with the power rotation. Sony got hit hard.

this is something i hadnt considered.  it makes a lot of sense.  sony has to be bleeding money the last 2 weeks, and it looks like there isnt going to be an end to that for them in japan for at LEAST a few years.  they havent even started clearing rubble out there, let alone repairing infrustructure.

they are still searching for bodies mostly =/  i listened to a piece on npr about it yesterday.  its really sad.

any leighway smed might have had to keep development running likely went away when the quake hit.  as long as that game had been in development, i would have pulled the plug too when i looked at the projections for losses over the next 3 years they have to face.

i really feel for everyone out there.  i kind of wish i had the money to fly out and volunteer to help dig through rubble and help people rebuild their lives.

I pray for all the familys affected by the tsunami.

SOE would of had insurance to cover any event, Tsunami's, earthquakes etc have always been a part of this land (they are very close to nature).

SOE and The Agency were always going to part company this is not an AAA game (any gamer can see that). SOE needs new direction and leadership, as long as it is not B Roper then they have a chance to repair what has passed these last few years.

Do you honestly think SoE would joke about people losing their jobs?

Your post must be a joke.

This is SOE... They would joke about anything, if it made them some profit. ^^  Its too bad that TA was closed down. But given the last year or so, I'm not surprised.

Thou shalt not maketh a MMO which is not fantasy point and click.

That is the message here, anything unsual in the MMO genre and your days are numbered. You may not even get to launch.

SOE is becoming the elephants graveyard of MMO's. They start or take them in and then cancel them, a buisness practice which is not going to turn them a profit.

wish you were right but not this time.  It could be that the game wasn't going so well & SOE used the necessary layoffs as an excuse to dump a doomed IP.

They were working on this game for 4+ years, and have nothing to show for it. It's not a huge surprise it was cancelled.

Well at least one of them went down.  How many more is it before SOE closes?  I won't play anything SOE, don't need to explain why, do i?

     You are so correct.

Hysterically, there will still be people defending this failure of a company, no matter what.  It boggles the mind.
