I don't care what theme, (though branching out from Fantatsy/SCI FI might be fun) just don't make me fun from quest hub to quest hub to quest hub etc etc etc.
Just trying to live long enough to play a new, released MMORPG, playing New Worlds atm

While I really want an expansive sci-fi game, the only thing that I really want in a game is a better class of players, people who are not immature, gear-whore, race-to-the-endgame idiots.
IF EVE gets planetary combat and meaningful "ambulation" It would be the perfect MMO. Epic in everyway-catering to EVERY play style.
If RIFT can keep pumping new dynamic content, a bit more "sandbox" in terms of the leveling path/crafting and keep pace with raid content itll be pretty fantastic-its got a great base.
So for me-give EVE some "walk around as your character" play and/or give RIFT some sandbox and a good content flow-and ill be happy for a good long time!
Eve is a niche game not a game that tries to whore itself out to every playstyle for more customers, that's why we love it.
As for what I'd like to see in MMOs today, more advanced and enjoyable AI's particularly on the larger scale. For example factions that actually come up with plans and strategies for which places to capture and what advantages those give.
I would like to see more Sci-fi mmos, I am very very feed up with fantasy elf, dwarf mmos. And I dont mean I want to only fly a ship I wanna play a character. Anyone know any good sci fi mmo except AO?

It's been said a hundred times elsewhere...but here's the short list;
A game with:
Meaningful, territory control pvp that doesn't reset at the end of a 5min BG session
An intricate, involved NPC faction system with choices and consequences
Progression that means something; advancement that takes more a month of actual play to get to "end game" levels
Gameplay that is fun and entertaining; playing should be FUN not a grind to the endgame
Detailed, interactive housing and crafting - akin to pre-NGE SWG
Lots of tools for PLAYER generated content
A dev team in it for the long haul, a game planned to last 5 yrs not 5 months
NO Item shops, NO 3rd party bot/script support
Paced slow enough that I can chat occasionally with friends or get a cup of coffee while playing; combat that isn't geared for a hampster on crack
A big world where travel is meaningful; no istant ports to the other side of the world

Faction vs faction conflict done right.
I would love to see a Global Agenda Gameplay + Stargate planetary portal

Into the breach meatbags
Complex combat systems with true unique abilities (if class based) - With a warranty of never beeing dumbed down (dreams are allowed right).
A game that focus on pve or completely ignores pvp.
Game mechanics that supports working together, and recognizes player skills.
A living beleivable world with seasons, npc stories, factions etc .. and minimal references to real world or history.
More randomness in drops, map, reactions etc.
Active GMs (or players) who does events, wars, quests. Also swiftly kicks players who cheat or otherwise ruin the game experience for others.
And lots more .. can only say I will have no problem paying 50$ a month if I there is ever a game with the quality and features I like.
